The DnaJ1 heat shock protein interacts with the flavanone 3-hydroxylase-like protein F3HL to synergistically enhance drought tolerance by scavenging reactive oxygen species in tomato.

Plant J

March 2025

Key Laboratory of Agricultural Biosafety and Green Production of Upper Yangtze River (Ministry of Education), Southwest University, No. 2 Tiansheng Road, Beibei, Chongqing, 400715, P. R. China.

The widely distributed heat shock protein DnaJ is renowned for its pivotal role in enhancing thermal tolerance in plants; however, its involvement in drought tolerance remains elusive. In this study, genes encoding DnaJ1 were cloned from drought-resistant wild tomato (Solanum pennellii) and drought-sensitive cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SpDnaJ1 and SlDnaJ1 from both tomato species were localized in the chloroplast, and their gene expression was induced by various abiotic stresses.

Introduction: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) allografts are underutilized in liver transplantation (LT) due to increased risk of complications. These risks stem from ischemic injury sustained during the total donor warm ischemia time (tDWIT), historically limited to 30 min. Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) can mitigate these risks and facilitate LT of DCD grafts with extended tDWIT.

The placenta plays a crucial role in transferring nutrients and oxygen between the dam and fetus during pregnancy. It is highly influenced by environmental conditions, especially stressors such as heat and nutritional deficiencies, which can significantly impact the fetus's long-term health and development. Cattle, especially dairy cows, commonly experience stress during late gestation, which can lead to changes in behavior and physiology, affecting both subsequent milk production and fetal development.

There is a critical need for novel composite materials for high-performance chemical filtration and detoxification of organophosphonates (OPs) and other harmful compounds found in nerve agents, pesticides, and industrial processes. In this work, rapid hydrolysis of OPs using high-surface-area zirconium-based MOF-aerogel composites is demonstrated. Using a unique surfactant-templated solvothermal synthesis method, mesoporous UiO-66-NH grown on the fibers within a polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibrous sponge can produce a 3D MOF-polymer matrix with a specific surface area of up to 900 m g -almost 2X larger than the highest previously reported values while maintaining robust mechanical integrity.

Evolutionary constraints significantly limit the diversity of naturally occurring enzymes, thereby reducing the sequence repertoire available for enzyme discovery and engineering. Recent breakthroughs in protein structure prediction and de novo design, powered by artificial intelligence, now enable to create enzymes with desired functions without solely relying on traditional genome mining. Here, a computational strategy is demonstrated for creating new-to-nature polyethylene terephthalate hydrolases (PET hydrolases) by leveraging the known catalytic mechanisms and implementing multiple deep learning algorithms and molecular computations.

High lipid producing (HLP) tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a potential biofuel crop that produces an excess of 30% dry weight as lipid bodies in the form of triacylglycerol. While using HLP tobacco as a sustainable fuel source is promising, it has not yet been tested for its tolerance to warmer environments that are expected in the near future as a result of climate change. We found that HLP tobacco had reduced stomatal conductance, which results in increased leaf temperatures up to 1.

Strategies used by organisms to survive very cold climates - student's guide.

Cryo Letters

March 2025

One School Global, Sydney, Australia. Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, USA. Department of Physics, The University at Albany, NY, USA.

We briefly examine how cold-hardiness in general, including freeze-tolerance, freeze-avoidance and dehydration strategies allow survival in cold climates, through the eyes of some specific insects and fish. Strategies do vary with geography and latitude, even between two types of insects living in the same area. We look at ice nucleation proteins to enhance freezing and antifreeze proteins to help avoid ice formation or, in some cases, to hinder what is known as recrystallization, as a frozen organism thaws.
