Background: Flow-through flaps (FTFs) are an advanced technique in which a free flap is anastomosed to the pedicle of another free flap to reconstruct extensive head and neck defects when recipient vessels are scarce.

Methods: A multi-institutional cohort of FTFs used for head and neck reconstruction were reviewed. For comparison, FTF outcomes were compared to free flaps that required vein grafts (VG) to reach distant recipient vessels.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is infamous for its aggressive phenotype and poorer prognosis when compared to other breast cancer subtypes. One factor contributing to this poor prognosis is that TNBC lacks expression of the receptors that available hormonal or molecular-oriented therapies attack. New treatments that exploit biological targets specific to TNBC are desperately needed to improve patient outcomes.

Runs of Homozygosity and Inferences in Wild Populations.

Mol Ecol

January 2025

Conservation Biology Division, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Seattle, Washington, USA.

Long homozygous chromosome segments are known as runs of homozygosity (ROH); these reflect patterns of identity by descent and can be used to measure individual inbreeding, map recessive traits, and reconstruct demographic histories. Here, we review some key considerations with ROH detection and the inferences pertaining to inbreeding and demographic analyses in wild populations.

Insights into proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits - is it really monoclonal or not?

Curr Opin Nephrol Hypertens

January 2025

Control of the immune response B and lymphoproliferation, CNRS UMR 7276, INSERM UMR 1262, University of Limoges, Centre de référence de l'amylose AL et autres maladies par dépôts d'immunoglobuline monoclonale, Limoges, France; Service de néphrologie et Centre National de référence amylose AL et autres maladies à dépôts d'immunoglobulines monoclonales, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Université de Poitiers, Poitiers, France.

Purpose Of Review: Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID), is a disease defined by the presence of glomerulonephritis with nonorganized mono-isotypic immunoglobulin (Ig) deposits. This review will discuss the pathogenesis of PGNMID and address novel techniques for detection of monoclonal Ig and pathologic B-cell clones and for distinguishing monoclonal from oligoclonal Ig deposits.

Recent Findings: Because of low detection rate of circulating monoclonal Ig and nephritogenic B-cell clones and emerging reports of PGNMID-IgG in children, it has been recently argued that many PGNMID-IgG3 cases may not be monoclonal lesions.

Utility and bias in psychosocial evaluations for transplant listing.

Curr Opin Organ Transplant

January 2025

Department of Community Health.

Purpose Of Review: Disparities in access to transplantation are persistent and pervasive among minoritized populations, and remain incompletely explained by socioeconomic status, insurance, geography, or medical factors. Although much attention has been paid to factors contributing to disparities in organ allocation, fewer studies have focused on barriers to the transplant waitlist. Given increasing calls for equity in organ transplantation, we examine the role of nonmedical factors used in transplant listing decisions, including psychosocial factors like social support, motivation, and knowledge in improving utility in transplant listing decisions, as well as their potential for reinforcing bias.

View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Purpose Of Review: Demonstrate the impact of allocation system design on access to the waitlist and transplantation for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).

Recent Findings: Minoritized groups are more likely to be declined from transplant listing owing to psychosocial criteria. Lack of consistent definitions, screening tools with differential subgroup validity, and insufficient evidence-base contribute to concerns about reliance on psychosocial factors in transplant listing decisions.

The number of beef × dairy animals entering feedlots has increased, but the response of beef × dairy cattle to growth-promoting implants has not been well characterized. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of breed type and implant administration on live performance, carcass characteristics, sera metabolites, and immunohistochemical (IHC) outcomes. Forty-eight steers (average body weight [BW] = 417±22 kg) were sorted by breed into groups of predominantly Angus (B), black-hided beef × primarily Holstein (B×D), or Holstein (D), and half of the steers within each breed type were administered a steroidal implant.

Background: Despite an established association between heart failure (HF) and lung cancer (LC), there is limited evidence available regarding mortality patterns among the older (≥65 years) population in the United States.

Methods: The mortality data, spanning 1999 to 2019, was surveyed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database with HF and LC identified as underlying or contributing causes of death. Crude and age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) were calculated per 100,000 individuals.

Remote Sighted Assistance (RSA) is a popular smartphone-mediated aid for people with blindness, where a sighted individual converses with a blind individual in a one-on-one (1:1) session. Since sighted assistants outnumber blind individuals (13:1), this paper investigates what happens when more than one sighted individual assists a single blind individual in a session. Specifically, we propose paired-volunteer RSA, a new paradigm where two sighted volunteers assist a single user with blindness.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is considered one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders in the elderly; however, how it contributes to cognitive decline is poorly understood. With resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging from 66 individuals with ARHL and 54 healthy controls, group spatial independent component analyses, sliding window analyses, graph-theory methods, multilayer networks, and correlation analyses were used to identify ARHL-induced disturbances in static and dynamic functional network connectivity (sFNC/dFNC), alterations in global network switching and their links to cognitive performances. ARHL was associated with decreased sFNC/dFNC within the default mode network (DMN) and increased sFNC/dFNC between the DMN and central executive, salience (SN), and visual networks.

Pregnancy provides a window of opportunity for management of hypertension care. Particularly in the postpartum period - the so-called "4th trimester" - individuals of Black race are at increased risk for hypertension-related morbidity and mortality. Telehealth interventions, such as remote blood pressure monitoring programs and virtual postpartum visits, can reduce racial disparities in the delivery of recommended care.
