Congenital methemoglobinemia is a rare disease characterized by cyanosis and a left shifting of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve. The disease necessitates avoidance of certain medications commonly used in obstetrics, making labor analgesia and anesthesia challenging. We present a case report of peripartum anesthetic management of a pregnant patient with congenital methemoglobinemia type 1 who received remifentanil labor analgesia and continuous methemoglobin monitoring.

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Services, UPMC Magee Women's Hospital and Department of Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, USA.

Prenatal stress has been linked to preterm birth via inflammatory dysregulation. We conducted a cross-sectional study on female participants who delivered live, singleton infants at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Magee Women's Hospital. Participants ( = 200) were stratified by cumulative risk scores using a combination of individual factors (maternal education, diabetes, hypertension, smoking, relationship status, obesity, depression) and neighborhood deprivation scores.

Title X is a federally funded family planning initiative that provides low-cost and confidential reproductive health services to its clients. In recent years, Title X has been the subject of debate as its core tenants have been revised by the current administration. Though advocates have fought against these changes, the voices of survivors on intimate partner violence are absent from this conversation.

Purpose: The Vienna and Venezia (Elekta) are hybrid intracavitary/interstitial brachytherapy (BT) applicators for cervical cancers unsuitable for intracavitary BT alone to improve target coverage or reduce critical organ dose. There is limited outcome data with the use of these applicators outside published experience of the EMBRACE group. We report feasibility and early outcomes with the use of these hybrid applicators at our institution.

Screening mammography reduces breast cancer mortality; however, when used to examine women with dense breasts, its performance and resulting benefits are reduced. Increased breast density is an independent risk factor for breast cancer. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), ultrasound (US), molecular breast imaging (MBI), MRI, and contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) each have shown improved cancer detection in dense breasts when compared with 2D digital mammography (DM).

Background: Enhanced Recovery Protocols (ERPs) provide a multimodal approach to perioperative care, with the aims of improving patient outcomes while decreasing perioperative antiemetic and narcotic requirements. With high rates of post-operative nausea or vomiting (PONV) following total mastectomy (TM), we hypothesized that our institutional designed ERP would reduce PONV while improving pain control and decrease opioid use.

Methods: An ERP was implemented at a single institution for patients undergoing TM with or without implant-based reconstruction.

After a child is born, the examination of the placenta by a pathologist for abnormalities, such as infection or maternal vascular malperfusion, can provide important information about the immediate and long-term health of the infant. Detection of the pathologic placental blood vessel lesion decidual vasculopathy (DV) has been shown to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preeclampsia, which can lead to mother and neonatal morbidity in subsequent pregnancies. However, because of the high volume of deliveries at large hospitals and limited resources, currently a large proportion of delivered placentas are discarded without inspection.

Pathologists are adopting whole slide images (WSIs) for diagnosis, thanks to recent FDA approval of WSI systems as class II medical devices. In response to new market forces and recent technology advances outside of pathology, a new field of computational pathology has emerged that applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to WSIs. Computational pathology has great potential for augmenting pathologists' accuracy and efficiency, but there are important concerns regarding trust of AI due to the opaque, black-box nature of most AI algorithms.

Healthcare professionals rely on national organizations for guidance; the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) have differing guidelines for acceptable pedigree symbols to represent transgender patients and minimal recommendations for gender non-conforming (GNC) patients. Inconsistency in accepted pedigree symbols to represent these patients is a barrier to providing them appropriate care. We assess variability in pedigree practice among genetic counselors and students, as well as reported education on serving the needs of the transgender and GNC communities, through a survey distributed through NSGC.
