Purpose Of Review: To review evidence regarding the association between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, henceforth referred to as severe mental disorders (SMD), and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, its mechanisms, and the interventions to reduce this burden.
Recent Findings: Much of the loss in life expectancy in people with SMD remains driven by cardiovascular mortality. Antipsychotics and mood stabilizers are associated with negative cardio-metabolic outcomes, but large inter-individual differences are observed, and not treating SMD might be associated with even greater cardiovascular mortality.

Background: Brown algae evolved complex multicellularity independently of the animal and land plant lineages and are the third most developmentally complex phylogenetic group on the planet. An understanding of developmental processes in this group is expected to provide important insights into the evolutionary events necessary for the emergence of complex multicellularity. Here, we focus on mechanisms of epigenetic regulation involving post-translational modifications of histone proteins.

Conditional differentiation between haploids and diploids has been proposed to drive the evolutionary stability of isomorphic biphasic life cycles. The cost of producing and maintaining genetic information has been posed as a possible driver of this conditional differentiation. Under this hypothesis, haploids benefit over diploids in resource-limited environments by halving the costs of producing and maintaining DNA.

Collective action by inverse-Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs (I-BAR) domains drive micron-scale membrane remodeling. The macroscopic curvature sensing and generation behavior of I-BAR domains is well characterized, and computational models have suggested various mechanisms on simplified membrane systems, but there remain missing connections between the complex environment of the cell and the models proposed thus far. Here, we show a connection between the role of protein curvature and lipid clustering in the relaxation of large membrane deformations.

Solute carrier (SLC) transporters are emerging drug targets. Identifying the molecular determinants responsible for their specific and selective transport activities and describing key interactions with their ligands are crucial steps towards the design of potential new drugs. A general functional mapping across more than 400 human SLC transporters would pave the way to the rational and systematic design of molecules modulating cellular transport.

Aims: Depression is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the role of poor medical adherence is mostly unknown. We studied the association between depressive symptoms and non-adherence to medications targeting treatable cardiovascular risk factors in the CONSTANCES population-based French cohort.
Methods And Results: We used CONSTANCES data linked to the French national healthcare database to study the prospective association between depressive symptoms (assessed at inclusion with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale) and non-adherence to medications (less than 80% of trimesters with at least one drug dispensed) treating type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia over 36 months of follow-up.

Background: Chemotherapy is the only systemic treatment approved for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), with a selection of regimens based on patients' performance status and expected efficacy. The establishment of a potent stratification associated with chemotherapeutic efficacy could potentially improve prognosis by tailoring treatments.
Patients And Methods: Concomitant chemosensitivity and genome-wide RNA profiles were carried out on preclinical models (primary cell cultures and patient-derived xenografts) derived from patients with PDAC included in the PaCaOmics program (NCT01692873).

Several studies have found maternal exposure to particulate matter pollution was associated with adverse birth outcomes, including infant mortality and preterm birth. In this context, our study aims to quantify the air pollution burden of disease due to preterm birth complications and infant death in Paris, with particular attention to people living in the most deprived census blocks. Data on infant death and preterm birth was available from the birth and death certificates.

Despite the lack of large randomized clinical studies, viscoelastic tests (VETs) have been a critical armamentarium for hemostatic control in liver transplantation (LT) since the 1960s. Many transplant institutions have adopted VETs in their clinical practice. Several small-size randomized clinical trials on LT patients have suggested that VET-guided hemostatic treatment algorithms have led to decreased indications for and amounts of transfused blood products, especially fresh-frozen plasma, compared to standard laboratory-based hemostatic management.

Interrogating the genomics of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA; the liquid biopsy) has advantages in patients in whom tissue biopsy is difficult. However, the reported concordance between genomic analysis of tissue DNA and ctDNA is variable among studies. Herein, we characterized the clinical implications of the relationship between mutations in genes in tissue DNA versus ctDNA.

is a genus of filamentous, marine brown algae. Brown algae belong to the stramenopiles, a large supergroup of organisms that are only distantly related to animals, land plants and fungi. Brown algae are also one of only a small number of eukaryotic lineages that have evolved complex multicellularity.

Recent series have demonstrated advantages of living donor over deceased donor liver transplantation, with particular benefit for those with low model for end-stage liver disease score. The logic underlying the transplantation of patients before they become too sick is intuitive. It reduces mortality and drop outs from the waiting list and makes transplant surgery less demanding.

Liver resection (LR) remains the best therapeutic option for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with preserved hepatic function and who are not eligible for liver transplantation. After its inception, the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol was widely used for treating patients with liver cancer, although there are still no clear indications for improving upon it in both open and laparoscopic surgery. This study aims to describe our institute's experience in the application of the ERAS protocol in a cohort of HCC patients, and to explore possible factors that could have an impact on postoperative outcomes.

The management of primary liver tumors requires the involvement of multiple specialist skills and the best possible treatment in terms of cost, risk, and benefit that could be provided by hepatobiliary or transplant surgeon, interventional radiologist, hepatologist, radiotherapist, or oncologist is needed to be chosen for each patient. This is particularly relevant for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), that is the most common primary liver tumor, and it occurs in more than 90% of cases in the setting of cirrhosis. To address the increasing complexity of cancer care, multidisciplinary tumor boards (MDTBs) have evolved to offer patients appropriate and tailored cancer treatments.

Background: Indocyanine green injected intravenously has been employed in many fields of hepatobiliary surgery such as liver and biliary tree mapping, tumor detection, and graft evaluation in liver transplant. This latter application has, in our opinion, particular potentials when a split liver transplantation is performed 1-3.
Methods: In this study, we used infrared technology to evaluate in real-time the segment 4 region in a recipient of extended right lobe transplantation.

Purpose Of Review: The modalities of management of resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) have evolved in recent years with new practice guidelines on adjuvant chemotherapy and results of randomized phase III trials. The aim of this review is to describe the state of the art in this setting and to highlight future possible perspectives.
Recent Findings: Resectable PDAC is the tumor without vascular contact or a limited venous contact without vein irregularity.
Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) is a transcription factor that plays a critical role in hepatocyte function, and HNF4α-based reprogramming corrects terminal liver failure in rats with chronic liver disease. In the livers of patients with advanced cirrhosis, HNF4α RNA expression levels decrease as hepatic function deteriorates, and protein expression is found in the cytoplasm. These findings could explain impaired hepatic function in patients with degenerative liver disease.

Oligodendrocytes, the myelinating cells in the vertebrate central nervous system, produce myelin sheaths to enable saltatory propagation of action potentials. The process of oligodendrocyte myelination entails a stepwise progression from precursor specification to differentiation, which is coordinated by a series of transcriptional and chromatin remodeling events. ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling enzymes, which utilize ATP as an energy source to control chromatin dynamics and regulate the accessibility of chromatin to transcriptional regulators, are critical for oligodendrocyte lineage development and regeneration.
