Semaglutide for management of obesity in adolescents: efficacy, safety, and considerations for clinical practice.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to describe the existing limited data related to the use of semaglutide in adolescents with obesity, supplementing with findings from adult studies of semaglutide use.

Recent Findings: Semaglutide, as a once weekly subcutaneous injection for weight management, effectively reduces body mass index (BMI) while improving hyperglycemia, elevated alanine aminotransferase levels, hyperlipidemia, and quality of life in youth with obesity. As of this review, only one large randomized clinical trial of semaglutide in youth has been completed, with a follow-up duration of 68 weeks.

In the United States, annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged ≥6 months. Using data from four vaccine effectiveness (VE) networks during the 2023-24 influenza season, interim influenza VE was estimated among patients aged ≥6 months with acute respiratory illness-associated medical encounters using a test-negative case-control study design. Among children and adolescents aged 6 months-17 years, VE against influenza-associated outpatient visits ranged from 59% to 67% and against influenza-associated hospitalization ranged from 52% to 61%.

The International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA) Consensus Conference on Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis, Prevention, and Management of Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorders after Solid Organ Transplantation in Children took place on March 12-13, 2019, and the work of conference members continued until the end of December 2021. The goal was to produce evidence-based consensus guidelines on the definitions, diagnosis, prevention, and management of PTLD and related disorders based on the critical review of the literature and consensus of experts. Anesthetic and surgical techniques for the liver transplantation have progressed considerably over the past sixty years; however, this procedure is still fraught with substantial morbidity. To increase the safety culture associated with the liver transplantation, we detail nine error traps associated with anesthesia for pediatric liver transplantation. These potential pitfalls are divided into the operative phases: pre-operative preparation (Failure to have a dedicated anesthesia team for pediatric liver transplantation); pre-anhepatic (Failure to prepare for massive blood loss, Failure to monitor for coagulation abnormalities); anhepatic including reperfusion (Failure to prepare for clamping of the inferior vena cava, Failure to recognize metabolic changes, Failure to maintain homeostasis for reperfusion, Failure to prepare for Post-reperfusion syndrome); and post-anhepatic (Failure to optimize liver perfusion, Failure to maintain hemostatic balance).

Background: Leukemia and lymphoma (LL) are the most common cancer diagnoses of childhood with high survival rates, but not without impact on the child's functioning and quality of life. This study aimed to use patient-reported data to describe the symptomatic adverse event (AE) experiences among children with LL diagnoses.

Methods: Two hundred and fifty seven children and adolescents aged 7-18 years with a first LL diagnosis completed the Pediatric Patient-Reported version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (Ped-PRO-CTCAE) and Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pediatric measures before starting a treatment course (T1) and after the treatment (T2).
