Therapeutic targeting of Sp1 transcription factor and survivin, are studied in various cancers due to their consistent overexpression. These markers result in poorer cancer prognoses and their downregulation has been investigated as an effective treatment approach. Mithramycin-A and Tolfenamic acid are two drugs with innate anti-cancer properties and are suggested to be able to target Sp1 through GC/GT DNA binding interference, however in-depth binding and mechanistic studies are lacking.

Background: This study was designed to explore the epidemiological and clinical profiles of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in neonates from the Suzhou area of China, taking into consideration how climate factors influence disease.
Methods: From 2010 to 2014, nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) collected from hospitalized neonates with lower respiratory tract infections (LRIs) were screened for seven common respiratory viruses including RSV by direct immunofluorescence assay. Human bocavirus, human metapneumovirus, and mycoplasma pneumoniae were detected by polymerase chain reaction.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical and laboratory characteristics of children with refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP).
Methods: Seventy-six children with RMPP and 26 children with non-refractory M. pneumoniae pneumonia (NRMPP), confirmed by both serology and fluorescent quantitation PCR in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), were evaluated retrospectively.

Phytoestrogens are plant-derived compounds found mainly in soy with known estrogenic properties and a potential for benefits to human health. Increased intake in phytoestrogens stemmed from the search for safe alternatives to hormone replacement therapies. Based on epidemiologic evidence comparing Western and Asian populations and clinical studies, phytoestrogens show promise to improve health and brain function.

The availability of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has positioned primary care physicians to play an active role in ensuring its successful implementation. However, physicians must be aware of common knowledge, attitudes, and belief barriers associated with HPV and the vaccine that are often encountered during clinical visits. This editorial provides primary care physicians an overview of these barriers and realistic recommendations utilizing the "5A's" - Awareness, Assess, Address, Acceptability, and Activate.

Within the hierarchy of epithelial stem cells, normal progenitor cells may express regulated telomerase during renewal cycles of proliferation and differentiation. Discontinuous telomerase activity may promote increased renewal capacity of progenitor cells, while deregulated/continuous telomerase activity may promote immortalization when differentiation and/or senescent pathways are compromised. In the present work, we show that resveratrol activates, while progesterone inactivates, continuous telomerase activity within 24 h in subpopulations of human Li-Fraumeni syndrome-derived breast epithelial cells.

A 65-year-old female presented with constitutional symptoms of fever and weight loss with bilateral adnexal masses on physical examination. Total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed and subsequently revealed giant cell arteritis involving numerous small arteries in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, paraovarian and paratubal soft tissues, myometrium, and cervix. After surgery, the patient continued to have constitutional symptoms.

It has been suggested that stimulus dependence is a general feature of all developing sensory systems. We tested this idea for the developing zebrafish vestibular system using a bioreactor the National Aeronautic and Space Agency designed to simulate microgravity for cells in culture on earth. We replaced the culture medium with aquarium water and maintained zebrafish eggs/hatchlings in the bioreactor for either 72 or 96 h postfertilization.
