In reports of randomized controlled trials, thorough description of the attention control condition has been recommended, yet is frequently lacking. The Tele-Savvy Caregiver program for informal caregivers of persons living with dementia was tested in a randomized controlled trial with an attention control condition. The purpose of this trial was to test Tele-Savvy's efficacy in reducing the negative effects of caregiving on caregivers, promoting quality of life for persons living with dementia, and improving caregiver mastery.

Evidence suggests that exposure to early life adversity (ELA) programs the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to influence responses to later adversity and predisposes women to depression. However, few studies have examined whether ELA moderates the HPA cortisol response to adulthood adversity and depressive symptoms in pregnant women. The aims of this study were to determine (a) whether ELA, adulthood adversity, and depressive symptoms differentially predict patterns of cortisol and (b) whether ELA moderates the relationship of adulthood adversity or depressive symptoms to cortisol.

Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and hospitalization in the rural United States. Midwestern farmers are integral to rural communities, but little is known about the effect of occupational variability of seasonal work and technology use on their cardiovascular disease risk.

Aims: This study describes the relationships of health behaviors and cardiovascular disease risk in 40 Midwestern farmers during peak and off-peak farming seasons.

This secondary analysis from a larger mixed methods study with a sequential explanatory design investigates the clinical challenges for nurses providing patient care, in an airborne and contact isolation room, while using a computer on wheels for medication administration in a simulated setting. Registered nurses, who regularly work in clinical care at the patient bedside, were recruited as study participants in the simulation and debriefing experience. A live volunteer acted as the standardized patient who needed assessment and intravenous pain medication.

It is important to understand adult outcomes in childhood obesity prevention programs as parents and caregivers have a significant influence on the eating and physical activity habits of youth. Grounded in the social cognitive theory, the iCook 4-H study was centered on a dyad model (9-10 year-olds and their primary meal preparers) to teach healthy cooking skills, shopping and meal habits, and being active as a family. The program took place in five states and dyads (n = 54) were recruited through flyers, e-mails, and in-person contact.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to describe symptom management strategies used by elderly patients (n = 236) 3 and 6 weeks after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABS). Three weeks after surgery, the most frequently used strategies were rest to manage shortness of breath (53%) and fatigue (53%), medications for incision pain (24%), and repositioning for swelling (35%) and sleep disturbance (18%). Overall, fewer patients experiencing sleep disturbances (39%), incision pain (39%), swelling (46%), and appetite problems (17%) reported using a strategy to manage their symptom.

This descriptive study examined pain descriptors in a group of patients with arthritis prior to total knee replacement (TKR), and on postoperative days 1 and 3. The McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ), consisting of 78 descriptive words in 20 subclasses of descriptors scaled on intensity dimensions, was administered to each subject prior to and on two occasions after surgery. The findings support results from previous studies indicating that clusters of words are more often selected to express chronic pain, and other patterns are used to describe acute pain during the early postoperative period.

The purpose of this experimental study was to determine the effects of second and third day postoperative music interventions (music, music video) on pain and sleep in 96 postoperative patients having CABG surgery. The Verbal Rating Scale scores obtained before and after each 30-minute session showed that pain decreased over time for all three groups with no difference across groups. The McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) was administered before session 1 and after session 2, and results indicated that Sensory, Affective, and Present Pain Intensity subscales showed no group difference for pain; however, pain decreased from Day 2 to Day 3 for all three groups.
