Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, University of Michigan, 100 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, 48109, MI,USA.

In this paper we propose feature selection and machine learning approaches to identify a combination of features for risk prediction of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disease progression. In a sample of 32 TMJ osteoarthritis and 38 controls, feature selection of 5 clinical comorbidities, 43 quantitative imaging, 28 biological features and was performed using Maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy, Chi-Square and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Recursive Feature Elimination. We compared the performance of learning using concave and convex kernels (LUCCK), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) approaches to predict disease cure/improvement or persistence/worsening.

The nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeats, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome plays a crucial role in innate immunity and is involved in the pathogenesis of autoinflammatory diseases. Glycolysis regulates NLRP3 inflammasome activation in macrophages. However, how lactic acid fermentation and pyruvate oxidation controlled by the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) affect NLRP3 inflammasome activation and autoinflammatory disease remains elusive.

Executive Associate Dean and Professor, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, San Francisco, California.

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is an essential part of every encounter with patients in a healthcare setting, including oral healthcare. To ensure best practices are being followed, dental healthcare personnel (DHCP) should be familiar with several guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including the Core Infection Prevention and Control Practices. The core practices represent the foundation upon which all other IPC protocols are built.

Living organisms have evolved within the natural electromagnetic fields (EMFs) of the earth which comprise the global atmospheric electrical circuit, Schumann resonances (SRs) and the geomagnetic field. Research suggests that the circadian rhythm, which controls several physiological functions in the human body, can be influenced by light but also by the earth's EMFs. Cyclic solar disturbances, including sunspots and seasonal weakening of the geomagnetic field, can affect human health, possibly by disrupting the circadian rhythm and downstream physiological functions.

Even as prescription opioid dispensing rates have begun to decrease, the use of illicit opioids such as heroin and fentanyl has increased. Thus, the end of the opioid epidemic is not in sight, and treating patients that are addicted to opioids remains of utmost importance. Currently, the primary pharmacotherapies used to treat opioid addiction over the long term are the opioid antagonist naltrexone, the partial-agonist buprenorphine, and the full agonist methadone.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasingly prevalent worldwide, but life-history strategy may mitigate the costs of ALAN for animals. Yet, interactions among ALAN, life-history strategy and tolerance to climate-related stressors are unknown. We determined if developmental ALAN exposure (1) affects development, (2) affects adult phenotype, including heat and desiccation tolerance, and (3) affects and/or interacts with life-history strategy.

Blubber is a modified subcutaneous adipose tissue in marine mammals that provides energy storage, thermoregulation, hydrodynamic locomotion, and buoyancy. Blubber displays vertical stratification by lipid content, fatty acid composition, and vascularization, leading to the assumption that deeper blubber layers are metabolically active, while superficial layers are mainly structural and thermoregulatory. However, few studies have examined functional stratification of marine mammal blubber directly, especially in pinnipeds.

December 2022

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA 94305, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Preeclampsia is a complex pregnancy-related condition, and its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • Researchers created machine-learning models that can predict preeclampsia early in pregnancy (within the first 16 weeks) by analyzing six omics datasets from a group of pregnant women.
  • The best model, using nine specific urine metabolites, showed high accuracy in predicting preeclampsia, with an AUC of 0.88 in initial tests and 0.83 in validation, while an integrated multiomics approach further increased accuracy to 0.94 and identified important biological pathways.

Lipedema: Insights into Morphology, Pathophysiology, and Challenges.

Biomedicines

November 2022

Department of Physiology & Pharmacology, Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy, University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA 95211, USA.

Lipedema is an adipofascial disorder that almost exclusively affects women. Lipedema leads to chronic pain, swelling, and other discomforts due to the bilateral and asymmetrical expansion of subcutaneous adipose tissue. Although various distinctive morphological characteristics, such as the hyperproliferation of fat cells, fibrosis, and inflammation, have been characterized in the progression of lipedema, the mechanisms underlying these changes have not yet been fully investigated.

Pain and inflammation could have a negative impact on a patient's quality of life and performance, causing them to sleep less. Dexketoprofen trometamol (DKT) is a water-soluble, nonselective NSAIDs. Because DKT is quickly eliminated in the urine after oral delivery, its efficacy is limited and must be taken repeatedly throughout the day.

How progenitor cells can attain a distinct differentiated cell identity is a challenging problem given the fluctuating signaling environment in which cells exist and that critical transcription factors are often not unique to a differentiation process. Here, we test the hypothesis that a unique differentiated cell identity can result from a core component of the differentiated state doubling up as a signaling protein that also drives differentiation. Using live single-cell imaging in the adipocyte differentiation system, we show that progenitor fat cells (preadipocytes) can only commit to terminally differentiate after up-regulating FABP4, a lipid buffer that is highly enriched in mature adipocytes.

Statement Of Problem: A hemi-engaging abutment design has been suggested to improve the stability of the implant-to-abutment interface compared with that of a fully nonengaging design to restore implant-supported fixed partial denture. However, controversy persists regarding the benefit of using a hemi-engaging abutment design and prompts the need for specific mechanical testing on the effect of these designs on screw preload under simulated clinical conditions.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether significant differences in preload values of the screw before and after cyclic loading exist between hemi-engaging and nonengaging abutment fixed partial denture designs.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a major cause of disability worldwide and is associated with serious lasting impairment. A leading hypothesis of the pathophysiology of MDD is the monoamine deficiency hypothesis which suggests that depression is caused by depletion of serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine in the central nervous system. Serotonin is the most widely studied neurotransmitter in the pathophysiology of depression, with studies showing that reduced central serotonin synthesis leads to depressive symptoms in individuals at risk for depression.
