The brain's ability to rapidly transition between sleep, quiet wakefulness, and states of high vigilance is remarkable. Cerebral norepinephrine (NE) plays a key role in promoting wakefulness, but how does the brain avoid neuronal hyperexcitability upon arousal? Here, we show that NE exposure results in the generation of free fatty acids (FFAs) within the plasma membrane from both astrocytes and neurons. In turn, FFAs dampen excitability by differentially modulating the activity of astrocytic and neuronal Na, K, ATPase.

Objectives: Over half of new cancer diagnoses occur in patients aged 65 or older, with up to 40% experiencing anxiety. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) for anxiety screening, but the GAD-7 psychometric properties in this population are unknown. This study examined the GAD-7's reliability, validity, and item parameters, comparing its utility with the GAD-2 in older adults with cancer.

Substantial effects of photochemical reaction losses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on factor profiles can be investigated by comparing the differences between daytime and nighttime dispersion-normalized VOC data resolved profiles. Hourly speciated VOC data measured in Shijiazhuang, China from May to September 2021 were used to conduct study. The mean VOC concentration in the daytime and at nighttime were 32.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated shutdowns disrupted healthcare access and resulted in decreased cancer screenings. Cancer diagnosis delays have concerning downstream effects on late-stage cancer, especially for marginalized populations.
Methods: The study population included 349,458 adults in the California Cancer Registry diagnosed with cancer between January 2019 and December 2021, during which California experienced two stay-at-home orders.

Ca2+ signaling via the store operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) mediated by STIM1 and STIM2 proteins and the ORAI1 Ca2+ channel is important in saliva fluid secretion and has been associated with Sjogren's disease (SjD). However, there are no studies addressing STIM1/2 dysfunction in salivary glands or SjD in animal models. We report that mice lacking Stim1 and Stim2 (Stim1/2K14Cre(+)) in salivary glands exhibited reduced Ca2+ levels and hyposalivate.

Neuropathic pain (NeP) arises from pathologies of the nervous system, significantly impacting patient functionality and quality of life. Pregabalin is a first-line treatment for NeP, but there has been limited focus on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). This systematic review synthesizes PROs from clinical studies assessing pregabalin's efficacy in treating NeP, with a focus on sleep disturbance, mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL).

Objective: Theories of amygdala function are central to our understanding of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, limited knowledge of the molecular and cellular composition of the amygdala impedes translational research aimed at developing new treatments and interventions. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the composition of amygdala cells to help bridge the gap between preclinical models and human psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Objectives: We used community-based mixed methods to test whether transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people preferred gender identity questions developed by community members over current questions in use and generate hypotheses about data collection preferences.
Methods: We interviewed twenty TGD adults in English and Spanish, asking them to rate and discuss their responses to questions. We analyzed quantitative data with descriptive statistics and qualitative data with template analysis, then integrated them.

Introduction: Adult patients who have suffered acute cardiac or pulmonary failure are increasingly being treated using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a cardiopulmonary bypass technique. While ECMO has improved the long-term outcomes of these patients, neurological injuries can occur from underlying illness or ECMO itself. Cerebral autoregulation (CA) allows the brain to maintain steady perfusion during changes in systemic blood pressure.

Puerto Ricans are underrepresented in genetic research. This underrepresentation denies Puerto Ricans the benefit from therapeutic developments that could mitigate health disparities arising from conditions for which genetically-derived treatments exist. The Puerto Rican diaspora, especially post-2017 due to economic and environmental crises, has expanded within the USA.

The duration of the PR intervals in atypical Wenckebach atrioventricular block before and after a non-conducted P wave can exhibit a wide range of values and patterns. Understanding the different or at times puzzling manifestations of Wenckebach atrioventricular block in terms of its PR intervals can avoid diagnostic errors, especially the erroneous more serious diagnosis of Mobitz type II atrioventricular block.

Residual stone fragments are common after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), however, there is an unclear relationship between the presence of these residual stone fragments and the risk of unplanned stone events (USE). We investigated how the size of the largest residual stone fragment (LRSF) impacts the risk of USE post-PCNL. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of PCNL between 2018 and 2022.

Background: In non-nephrology settings, specialty Palliative Care (PC) improves decision-making, patient's quality of life (QoL), advance care planning (ACP), and certain indicators of the quality of end-of-life (EoL) care. This pilot RCT explored the feasibility and acceptability of a PC intervention, CKD-EDU, for older adults ≥75 years with eGFR ≤25 ml/min and their caregivers.
Methods: Participants randomized to the control group received standard nephrology care and routine kidney therapy (KT) education, while those randomized to CKD-EDU received a decision aid and met with a PC clinician up to three times to discuss KT decisions and EoL planning.

The COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) was established in March 2020 to monitor trends in hospitalizations associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. COVID-NET is a geographically diverse population-based surveillance system for laboratory-confirmed COVID-19-associated hospitalizations with a combined catchment area covering approximately 10% of the US population. Data collected in COVID-NET includes monthly counts of hospitalizations for persons with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection who reside within the defined catchment area.
