Background: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx) are indices used to assess arterial stiffness. We evaluated the effect of sodium glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RA) on arterial stiffness indices.
Methods: We searched PubMed (up to January 2024) for RCTs assessing the effect of SGLT2i or GLP1-RA on arterial stiffness with reporting outcomes PWV and AIx.

Background: Recent data highlight the internet's pivotal role as the primary information source for patients. In this study, we emulate a patient's/caregiver's quest for online information concerning chest deformities and assess the quality of available information.
Methods: We conducted an internet search using combination of the terms "pectus excavatum," "pectus excavatum surgery," "funnel chest," "pectus excavatum repair" and identified the first 100 relevant websites from the three most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

Background: Reproduction ability requires a certain amount of body fat that is necessary for ovulation, menstruation and pregnancy. Fat tissue represents an endocrine organ with high metabolic activity as it produces adipokines such as leptin and adiponectin. Our aim is to examine potential associations between women of reproductive age's ovarian reserves and their levels of leptin and adiponectin.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a significant global health challenge, ranking among the leading causes of neoplastic mortality. Despite transformative therapeutic advances, a considerable proportion of patients are diagnosed with metastatic disease, and 15-30% of those initially presenting with early-stage CRC eventually experience recurrence. Comprehensive molecular testing, especially the evaluation of microsatellite instability and mutations in KRAS/NRAS or BRAF genes, is essential upon diagnosis of stage IV disease, guiding treatment decisions.

Background: While arterial stiffening is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, it remains unclear whether there is an early vascular aging (EVA) in patients who have experienced acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate whether patients with AIS exhibit EVA through pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurements shortly after the stroke onset, shedding light on the relationship between arterial stiffness, hypertension, and stroke.
Methods: Thirteen case-control studies were included, comparing PWV measurements between AIS patients and non-AIS individuals.

The transformative potential of web scraping in surgical research through a comprehensive analysis of its revolutionary applications and profound impact is now within reach. This manuscript unveils the pivotal role of web scraping in driving innovation, enabling more effective management of human capital dynamics, and enhancing patient outcomes in the surgical field. As an example, we demonstrate how web scraping can uncover insights into international collaboration in surgery research revealing limited collaboration between surgeons in developed and developing countries.

: Patient care in Cardiac Intensive Care Units (CICU) has evolved but data on patient characteristics and outcomes are sparse. This retrospective observational study aimed to define clinical characteristics and risk factors of CICU patients, their in-hospital and 30-day mortality, and compare it with established risk scores. : Consecutive patients ( = 294, mean age 70 years, 74% males) hospitalized within 15 months were studied; APACHE II, EHMRG, GWTG-HF, and GRACE II were calculated on admission.

Introduction: COVID-19 generated a system-wide shock causing an unbalanced equilibrium between producing adequately trained physicians and meeting extraordinary operational needs. Previous studies report the experience of surgical residents during COVID-19 at a regional level. This study measures the learning losses related with the redeployment of highly specialized medical professionals to the care of COVID-19 patients, while we systematically investigate proposed remedial strategies.

Cystic liver disease has been increasingly reported in the literature, with a prevalence as high as 15-18%. Hepatic cysts are usually discovered incidentally, while their characterization and classification rely on improved imaging modalities. Complex cystic liver lesions comprise a wide variety of novel, re-introduced, and re-classified clinical entities.

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors and can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Radiologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, and radiation oncologists rely on brain MRI for diagnosis, treatment planning, and longitudinal treatment monitoring. However, automated, objective, and quantitative tools for non-invasive assessment of meningiomas on multi-sequence MR images are not available.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is a well-established imaging modality, providing more accurate and of higher quality information than transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) for a wide spectrum cardiac and extra-cardiac diseases. The present paper represents an effort by the Echocardiography Working Group (WG) of the Hellenic Cardiology Society to state the essential steps of the typical TOE exam performed in echo lab. This is an educational text, describing the minimal requirements and the preparation of a meticulous TOE examination.

Data on COVID-19 mortality among patients in intensive care units (ICUs) from Eastern and/or Southern European countries, including Greece, are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ICU mortality trends among critically ill COVID-19 patients during the first two years of the pandemic in Greece and to further investigate if certain patients' clinical characteristics contributed to this outcome. We conducted a multi-center retrospective observational study among five large university hospitals in Greece, between February 2020 and January 2022.
