Selective laser trabeculoplasty versus micropulse laser trabeculoplasty for intraocular pressure control in patients with primary open angle glaucoma: a 12-month retrospective comparative study.

This study was designed to compare the efficacy of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and micropulse laser trabeculoplasty (MLT) in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) requiring additional IOP control. In this retrospective, comparative study, we reviewed the charts of POAG patients requiring additional IOP lowering, who underwent either SLT or MLT and were followed for at least one year. We evaluated mean intraocular pressure (IOP), mean IOP reduction from baseline and mean number of glaucoma medications 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment.

Effects of Standardized Brazilian Green Propolis Extract (EPP-AF®) on Inflammation in Haemodialysis Patients: A Clinical Trial.

Background: Patients on haemodialysis (HD) present a significant inflammatory status, which has a pronounced negative impact on their outcomes. Propolis is a natural resin with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. We assessed the safety and impact of a standardized Brazilian green propolis extract (EPP-AF®) on the inflammatory status in patients under conventional HD.

Unplanned Transfers From Intermediate Care Units to Intensive Care Units: A Cohort Study.

This study evaluated unplanned transfers from the intermediate care unit (IMCU) to the intensive care unit (ICU) among urgent admissions. This retrospective, observational study was conducted in 2 ICUs and 1 IMCU. Three patterns of urgent admission were assessed: admissions to the ICU only, admissions to the IMCU only, and admissions to the IMCU with subsequent transfer to the ICU.

Differential impact of on-site or telepharmacy in the intensive care unit: a controlled before-after study.

Background: Clinical pharmacists have an important role in the intensive care unit (ICU) team but are scarce resources. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of on-site pharmacists on medical prescriptions in the ICU.

Background: Patients undergoing orthopedic surgery are at risk of post-operative complications and needing Medical Emergency Team (MET) review. We assessed the frequency of, and associations with MET calls in orthopedic patients, and whether this was associated with increased in-hospital morbidity and mortality.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of patients admitted over four years to a University teaching hospital using hospital administrative and MET call databases.

Background: Hypotension following orthopaedic surgery has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Rapid response teams (RRT) review patients on hospital wards with hypotension.

Aim: To evaluate the epidemiology of hypotensive RRT activations in adult orthopaedic patients to identify contributing factors and areas for future quality improvement.

Prognostication in urgent intensive care unit referrals: a cohort study.

Objectives: Prognostication is an essential ability to clinicians. Nevertheless, it has been shown to be quite variable in acutely ill patients, potentially leading to inappropriate care. We aimed to assess the accuracy of physician's prediction of hospital mortality in acutely deteriorating patients referred for urgent intensive care unit (ICU) admission.

Lactate clearance is associated with mortality in septic patients with acute kidney injury requiring continuous renal replacement therapy: A cohort study.

The aim of the study was to assess the clinical utility of lactate measured at different time points to predict mortality at 48 hours and 28 days in septic patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).Consecutive critically ill patients with septic AKI requiring CRRT were prospectively studied. Variables were collected at initiation of CRRT and 24 hours later.

Clinical significance of palliative care assessment in patients referred for urgent intensive care unit admission: A cohort study.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical characteristics of patients with palliative care (PC) and urgent intensive care unit (ICU) referrals in the same hospital admission.

Methods: All urgent ICU referrals at an academic, tertiary hospital, and the co-occurrence and timing of PC assessment were retrieved from a prospectively collected database.

Results: From May 2014 to May 2015, 2476 patients were analyzed and 179 (7%) had co-occurrence of PC assessment and urgent ICU referral in the same hospital admission.

Development of an algorithm to aid triage decisions for intensive care unit admission: a clinical vignette and retrospective cohort study.

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) admission triage is performed routinely and is often based solely on clinical judgment, which could mask biases. A computerized algorithm to aid ICU triage decisions was developed to classify patients into the Society of Critical Care Medicine's prioritization system. In this study, we sought to evaluate the reliability and validity of this algorithm.
