Non-facial (body) rejuvenation is a treatment of increasing demand, with patients seeking to harmonize the benefits of rejuvenated facial appearance with other areas of the body. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)-SCA (Sculptra®) has been approved for facial aesthetic uses since 1999 in Europe and since 2009 in the USA and more recently evaluated for the treatment of cellulite of the buttocks and thighs and other body indications. The current evidence base consists largely of prospective observational analyses and case series although systematic evaluations for a number of body areas are underway.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a set of conditions associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. Several serum fatty acids (FAs) seem to play an essential role in the development of cardiometabolic diseases and mortality. Thus, it is imperative to explore the impact of FAs on MetS parameters, using an early MetS screening tool such as MetScore, which is readily available in clinical practice.

Introduction:  Complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) has been intensively used, and there is currently an increasing demand for a more rigorous approach regarding its clinical effectiveness.

Aims:  The objectives of this overview were: first, to identify systematic reviews on homeopathy, acupuncture and phytotherapy in veterinary medicine and assess their methodological quality; and second, to map interventions and findings in the treatment or prophylaxis of any medical conditions in any animal species for which high-quality systematic reviews had identified reliable evidence of efficacy or effectiveness in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or controlled clinical trials (CCTs).

Method:  The study was an overview of systematic reviews published in the years 2000 to 2022 inclusive.

Tributyltin (TBT) is a biocide used in the formulation of antifouling paints and it is highly harmful. Despite the ban, the compound persists in the environment, contaminating marine foodstuffs and household products. Therefore, considering the route of exposure to the contaminant, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) acts as an important barrier against harmful substances and is a potential biomarker for understanding the consequences of these agents.

Adipocyte-derived inflammatory molecules induce senescent B cells through metabolic pathways.

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate that an adipocyte tissue-derived conditioned medium (ACM) contains inflammatory molecules that induce senescence in B cells.

Methods: We incubated blood-derived B cells from lean donors with ACM obtained from the adipose tissue of adult female donors with obesity undergoing weight reduction surgery or with medium as control. After 24 h, cells were harvested, and the expression of transcripts for proinflammatory cytokines (TNF/IL-6), chemokines (IL-8), and for markers of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Background: Evidence-informed policymaking (EIPM) requires a set of individual and organizational knowledge, skills and attitudes that should be articulated with background factors and needs. Our aim was to verify the modulative TP-4-ol capacity in 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide induced oral rat cancer. In vivo biocompatibility of diamond-like carbon films containing TiO nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

Hybrid diamond-like carbon (DLC) with incorporated titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticle coatings have low friction coefficient, high wear resistance, high hardness, biocompatibility, and high chemical stability. They could be employed to modify biomedical alloys surfaces for numerous applications in biomedical engineering. Here we investigate for the first time the in vivo inflammatory process of DLC coatings with incorporated TiO nanoparticles.

Human amniotic membrane for the treatment of large and refractory macular holes: a retrospective, multicentric, interventional study.

Background: The purpose of the current study is to report the anatomical and functional results of off-label human amniotic membrane graft as primary intervention to repair large to giant macular holes and in reoperations when wide internal limiting membrane peeling was unsuccessful.

Methods: Retrospective chart review was carried out in five different centers to identify all cases that had undergone off-label human amniotic membrane graft for the treatment of large or failed macular holes (MH). Data collected included age, gender, other concomitant diagnosis, symptoms duration, lens status, number of previous surgeries, macular hole measurements (minimum and base linear diameters), mean post-operative follow-up (months), and pre- and post-operative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).

Brazil experiences a late participation in total ankle arthroplasty, which could have positive and negative aspects. The positive view argues about the modern implants that Brazil has received in the past years, skipping the early total ankle replacement generation who present more complications and low survival rate in the literature. The negative aspects are related to gap of experience with Brazilian surgeons unable to participate in the development of the technique and implant designs during these years.

Iron Overload in Renal Transplant Patients: The Role of Hepcidin and Erythropoietin.

Renal transplant patients may present important serum iron overload (IO), which can persist for long periods after transplantation, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. We raised the hypothesis that post-transplant hypererythropoietinemia might induce reduction in serum hepcidin, favoring iron absorption. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of IO and associated factors in transplant patients and to evaluate erythropoietin and hepcidin levels in patients with and without IO.

Implementation of pharmaceutical care for older adults in the brazilian public health system: a case study and realistic evaluation.

Background: Pharmaceutical care services have been recognized as the most highly regarded professional pharmacy practice model that allows the identification, intervention, and resolution of drug related problems. This practice provides significant clinical outcomes and can reduce direct and indirect costs for health systems. However, its implementation can be complex and challenging, needing study experiences that aims at overcoming obstacles, especially in free and universal healthcare systems.

Toric intraocular lens versus limbal relaxing incisions for corneal astigmatism after phacoemulsification.

Background: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world, and clinically significant astigmatism may affect up to approximately 20% of people undergoing cataract surgery. Pre-existing astigmatism in people undergoing cataract surgery may be treated, among other techniques, by placing corneal incisions near the limbus (limbal relaxing incisions or LRIs) or by toric intraocular lens (IOLs) specially designed to reduce or treat the effect of corneal astigmatism on unaided visual acuity.

Atypical motor neurone disease (MND) represents a challenging and expanding group of neurodegenerative disorders involving the upper or lower motor neurones, and rarely both. Neuro-ophthalmological disturbances such as gaze-evoked downbeat nystagmus are extremely rare in the context of typical and atypical MND. Finger extension weakness and downbeat nystagmus motor neurone disease (FEWDON-MND) syndrome has been recently recognised as a distinct syndromic phenotype of MND, with a characteristic clinical picture.
