Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a set of conditions associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. Several serum fatty acids (FAs) seem to play an essential role in the development of cardiometabolic diseases and mortality. Thus, it is imperative to explore the impact of FAs on MetS parameters, using an early MetS screening tool such as MetScore, which is readily available in clinical practice.

Tributyltin (TBT) toxicity: Effects on enteric neuronal plasticity and intestinal barrier of rats' duodenum.

Auton Neurosci

June 2024

UNESP- São Paulo State University, Institute of Biosciences, Paulista Coast Campus (CLP), São Vicente, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Tributyltin (TBT) is a biocide used in the formulation of antifouling paints and it is highly harmful. Despite the ban, the compound persists in the environment, contaminating marine foodstuffs and household products. Therefore, considering the route of exposure to the contaminant, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) acts as an important barrier against harmful substances and is a potential biomarker for understanding the consequences of these agents.

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate that an adipocyte tissue-derived conditioned medium (ACM) contains inflammatory molecules that induce senescence in B cells.

Methods: We incubated blood-derived B cells from lean donors with ACM obtained from the adipose tissue of adult female donors with obesity undergoing weight reduction surgery or with medium as control. After 24 h, cells were harvested, and the expression of transcripts for proinflammatory cytokines (TNF/IL-6), chemokines (IL-8), and for markers of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Paper is one of the packaging materials that presents a biodegradable character, being used in several areas; however, its barrier properties (gases and fat) and mechanics are reduced, which limits its application. Coating papers with synthetic polymers improve these properties, reducing their biodegradability and recyclability. The objective of this work was to develop and characterize coated paperboard, using the tape casting technique, with different ratios of film form agar-agar/chitosan (AA:CHI, 100:0, 50:50, and 0:100) and different numbers of coating layers (operating times for application of 14.

Ageing has been associated with comorbidities, systemic low-grade of inflammation, and immunosenescence. Hypertension is the most common morbidity and anti-hypertensives are used for more than 50%. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 1 inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB) control blood pressure but also seem to play a role in comorbidities such as Alzheimer's disease, sarcopenia and cancer.

MDSCs, ageing and inflammageing.

Cell Immunol

April 2021

Department of Pathology and Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, United States.

The challenge of distinguishing between changes attributable to ageing and those attributable to pathology is even greater for the immune system than for many other organs, and this is especially true for myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Hematopoiesis is different in older adults with a bias towards myelopoiesis, and older adults also manifest "inflammageing" exacerbated by disease and contributing to MDSC induction. Hence, at least in humans, one can only investigate MDSCs in the context of ageing and disease states, and not in the context of ageing processes per se.

Article Synopsis
  • Musculoskeletal disorders are major global health issues, causing disability in people of all ages due to both aging and injuries, leading to significant emotional and economic consequences.
  • Current treatments, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, offer limited long-term pain relief and don't effectively repair damaged tissues.
  • Novel therapies like bone marrow aspirate (BMA) show promise due to their rich cellular components that aid in tissue regeneration and modulate inflammatory responses, although the underlying regenerative mechanisms are still not completely understood.

Brazilian Total Ankle Replacement Experience.

Orthop Clin North Am

April 2020

Department of the Locomotor Apparatus, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Electronic address:

Brazil experiences a late participation in total ankle arthroplasty, which could have positive and negative aspects. The positive view argues about the modern implants that Brazil has received in the past years, skipping the early total ankle replacement generation who present more complications and low survival rate in the literature. The negative aspects are related to gap of experience with Brazilian surgeons unable to participate in the development of the technique and implant designs during these years.

Renal transplant patients may present important serum iron overload (IO), which can persist for long periods after transplantation, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. We raised the hypothesis that post-transplant hypererythropoietinemia might induce reduction in serum hepcidin, favoring iron absorption. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of IO and associated factors in transplant patients and to evaluate erythropoietin and hepcidin levels in patients with and without IO.
