Background: Pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are acknowledged, during inflammatory bone destruction, as key regulators of osteoclast and osteoblast differentiation and activity. However, evidence regarding the exact role of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenesis-related factors in peri-implant diseases is unclear. We aimed to execute a systematic review and meta-analysis about the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenesis-related factors levels in peri-implant diseases.

White spot lesions (WSLs) are sites of enamel surface and subsurface demineralization that increases tissue porosity and affects the teeth appearance. The resin infiltration technique proved to be a valid alternative to arrest caries lesion progression and to masking a color change in noncavitated WSLs. Thus, this study aims to report a clinical case of anterior WSLs treated with resin infiltration technique with an 8-year follow-up.

It is important to understand whether endothelial cells are epigenetically affected by titanium-enriched media when angiogenesis is required during bone development and it is expected to be recapitulated during osseointegration of biomaterials. To better address this issue, titanium-enriched medium was obtained from incubation of titanium discs for up to 24 h as recommended by ISO 10993-5:2016, and further used to expose human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) for up to 72 h, when the samples were properly harvested to allow molecular analysis and epigenetics. In general, our data show an important repertoire of epigenetic players in endothelial cells responding to titanium, reinforcing protein related to the metabolism of acetyl and methyl groups, as follows: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) and NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (Sirt1), DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and ten-eleven translocation (TET) methylcytosine dioxygenases, which in conjunction culminate in driving chromatin condensation and the methylation profile of DNA strands, respectively.

Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr)-based alloys are emerging with important characteristics for use in dentistry, but the knowledge of epigenetic mechanisms in endothelial cells has barely been achieved. In order to address this issue, we have prepared a previously Co-Cr-enriched medium to further treat endothelial cells (HUVEC) for up to 72 h. Our data show there is important involvement with epigenetic machinery.

Due to its primordial function as a drug carrier, human serum albumin (HSA) is extensively studied regarding its binding affinity with developing drugs. Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is frequently applied as a spectroscopic molecular ruler to measure the distance between the binding site and the ligand. In this work, we have shown that most of the published results that use the FRET technique to estimate the distance from ligands to the binding sites do not corroborate the crystallography data.

Long non-coding RNAs are frequently found to be dysregulated and are linked to carcinogenesis, aggressiveness, and chemoresistance in a variety of tumors. As expression levels of the gene and lncRNA are altered in bladder tumors, we sought to use their combined expression to distinguish between low-and high-grade bladder tumors by RTq-PCR. In addition, we evaluated the functional role of and its association with the modulation of gemcitabine sensitivity in high-grade bladder-tumor cells.

The winter diets of northern ungulates are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions and ungulate population densities. We hypothesized that the winter diets of smaller browser ungulates might not readily change in response to fluctuating environmental conditions. We analyzed long-term trends in the winter diet of the Japanese serow () by analyzing rumen contents of 532 individuals over a span of 16 years among five populations along with changes in the population densities of sika deer () in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

Planetary rings are observed not only around giant planets, but also around small bodies such as the Centaur Chariklo and the dwarf planet Haumea. Up to now, all known dense rings were located close enough to their parent bodies, being inside the Roche limit, where tidal forces prevent material with reasonable densities from aggregating into a satellite. Here we report observations of an inhomogeneous ring around the trans-Neptunian body (50000) Quaoar.

Genetic divergence between species depends on reproductive isolation (RI) due to traits that reduce interspecific mating (prezygotic isolation) or are due to reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation). Previous research found that prezygotic barriers tend to be stronger than postzygotic barriers, but most studies are based on the evaluation of F hybrid fitness in early life cycle stages. We combined field and experimental data to determine the strength of 17 prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive barriers between two Lysimachia species that often co-occur and share pollinators.
