Biomaterials are used extensively in graft procedures to correct bone defects, interacting with the body without causing adverse reactions. The aim of this pre-clinical study was to analyze the effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) with the use of a low-level laser in the repair process of bone defects filled with inorganic matrix (IM) associated with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (FB). A circular osteotomy of 4 mm in the left tibia was performed in 30 Wistar male adult rats who were randomly divided into three groups: G1 = IM + PBM, G2 = IM + FB and G3 = IM + FB + PBM.

Extending the range of use of the heterologous fibrin biopolymer, this pre-clinical study showed a new proportionality of its components directed to the formation of scaffold with a lower density of the resulting mesh to facilitate the infiltration of bone cells, and combined with therapy by laser photobiomodulation, in order to accelerate the repair process and decrease the morphofunctional recovery time. Thus, a transoperative protocol of laser photobiomodulation (L) was evaluated in critical bone defects filled with deproteinized bovine bone particles (P) associated with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HF). The groups were: BC (blood clot + laser); HF; HF; PHF (P+HF); PHF (P+HF+L).

Artemether (ART) and lumefantrine (LUM) are the gold standard antimalarial drugs used for the treatment of malaria in children and pregnant women. Typically, ART and LUM are delivered orally in the form of a combined tablet, however, the appropriateness of this route of administration for these drugs is questionable due to the poor absorption and therefore bioavailability observed unless administered alongside lipid-rich foods. Transdermal drug delivery in the form of a patch-type system has been identified as a viable alternative to the conventional tablet-based therapy.

Faculdade de Engenharia, UNESP-University Estadual Paulista, Bauru, Department of Electrical Engineering, Av. Eng. Luiz Edmundo C. Coube 14-01, 17033-360 Bauru⁻SP, Brazil.

Low-cost piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) diaphragm transducers have attracted increasing attention as effective sensing devices, based on the electromechanical impedance (EMI) principle, for applications in many engineering sectors. Due to the considerable potential of PZT diaphragm transducers in terms of excellent electromechanical coupling properties, low implementation cost and wide-band frequency response, this technique provides a new alternative approach for tool condition monitoring in grinding processes competing with the conventional and expensive indirect sensor monitoring methods. This paper aims at assessing the structural changes caused by wear in single-point dressers during their lifetime, in order to ensure the reliable monitoring of the tool condition during dressing operations.

This paper presents an approach for impedance-based sensor monitoring of dressing tool condition in grinding by using the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique. This method was introduced in Part 1 of this work and the purpose of this paper (Part 2) is to achieve an optimal selection of the excitation frequency band based on multi-layer neural networks (MLNN) and k-nearest neighbor classifier (-NN). The proposed approach was validated on the basis of dressing tool condition information obtained from the monitoring of experimental dressing tests with two industrial stationary single-point dressing tools.

We study some statistical properties for the behavior of the average squared velocity-hence the temperature-for an ensemble of classical particles moving in a billiard whose boundary is time dependent. We assume the collisions of the particles with the boundary of the billiard are inelastic, leading the average squared velocity to reach a steady-state dynamics for large enough time. The description of the stationary state is made by using two different approaches: (i) heat transfer motivated by the Fourier law and (ii) billiard dynamics using either numerical simulations and theoretical description.
