The central serotonin receptor (5-HTR) modulates 5-HT and dopamine (DA) neuronal function in the mammalian brain and has been suggested as a potential target for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders involving derangements of these monoamine systems, such as schizophrenia, cocaine abuse and dependence and major depressive disorder. Studies in rats and mice yielded contrasting results on the control of 5-HT/DA networks by 5-HTRs, thereby leading to opposite views on the therapeutic potential of 5-HTR agents for treating the above disorders. These discrepancies may result from anatomo-functional differences related to a different cellular location of 5-HTRs in rat and mouse brain.

Our study aims at comparing in C57/Bl male mice, the impact of repeated injections of baclofen (an agonist of GABAB receptor) or diazepam (a benzodiazepine acting through a positive allosteric modulation of GABAA receptor) administered during the alcohol-withdrawal period on hippocampus-dependent memory impairments and brain regional glucocorticoid dysfunction after a short (1-week) or a long (4-week) abstinence. Hence, mice were submitted to a 6-month alcohol consumption (12%v/v) and were progressively withdrawn to water. Then, after a 1- or 4-weeks abstinence, they were submitted to a contextual memory task followed by measurements of corticosterone concentrations in the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC), the ventral hippocampus (vHPC) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC).

Locomotion in vertebrates is accompanied by retinal image-stabilizing eye movements that derive from sensory-motor transformations and predictive locomotor efference copies. During development, concurrent maturation of locomotor and ocular motor proficiency depends on the structural and neuronal capacity of the motion detection systems, the propulsive elements and the computational capability for signal integration. In developing Xenopus larvae, we demonstrate an interactive plasticity of predictive locomotor efference copies and multi-sensory motion signals to constantly elicit dynamically adequate eye movements during swimming.

The chronological progression of brain atrophy over decades, from pre-symptomatic to dementia stages, has never been formally depicted in Alzheimer's disease. This is mainly due to the lack of cohorts with long enough MRI follow-ups in cognitively unimpaired young participants at baseline. To describe a spatiotemporal atrophy staging of Alzheimer's disease at the whole-brain level, we built extrapolated lifetime volumetric models of healthy and Alzheimer's disease brain structures by combining multiple large-scale databases ( = 3512 quality controlled MRI from 9 cohorts of subjects covering the entire lifespan, including 415 MRI from ADNI1, ADNI2 and AIBL for Alzheimer's disease patients).

Previous researches have shown that the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) is involved in time and numerosity processing. This study aimed at examining (i) interval timing and (ii) interaction between duration and numerosity processing in four drug-resistant epileptic patients with postoperative lesions in the IFG in comparison with thirteen healthy controls. The duration reproduction and discrimination tasks performed in the sub- and supra-second ranges did not reveal any significant differences between patients and controls.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a highly prevalent and harmful medical disorder often comorbid with psychosis where it can contribute to cardiovascular complications. As immune dysfunction is a key shared component of both MetS and schizophrenia (SZ), this study investigated the relationship between immune alterations and MetS in patients with SZ, whilst controlling the impact of confounding clinical characteristics including psychiatric symptoms and comorbidities, history of childhood maltreatment and psychotropic treatments.

In most vertebrates, posture and locomotion are achieved by a biomechanical apparatus whose effectors are symmetrically positioned around the main body axis. Logically, motor commands to these effectors are intrinsically adapted to such anatomical symmetry, and the underlying sensory-motor neural networks are correspondingly arranged during central nervous system (CNS) development.
