Purpose Of Review: This review aims at reporting the current evidence of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on grief in children.

Recent Findings: Evidence from the scientific literature shows that the severity of grief in children is impacted by numerous risk factors which can lead to prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Among these risk factors are the unpredictability of the death, the lack of understanding about what is happening by the child, the global insecurity raised by the context of the pandemic or again the impossibility for the child to find comfort with his peers due to the lock-down.

Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a main contributor of sudden cardiac death worldwide. The discovery of new biomarkers that can improve AMI risk prediction meets a major clinical need for the identification of high-risk patients and the tailoring of medical treatment. Previously, we reported that autophagy a highly conserved catabolic mechanism for intracellular degradation of cellular components is involved in atherosclerotic plaque phenotype and cardiac pathological remodeling.

Background: The discovery of novel biomarkers that improve current cardiovascular risk prediction models of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is needed for the identification of very high-risk patients and therapeutic decision-making. Autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic mechanism for intracellular degradation of cellular components through lysosomes. The autophagy process helps maintain cardiac homeostasis and dysregulated autophagy has been described in cardiovascular conditions.

Recruitment of pre-dementia participants: main enrollment barriers in a longitudinal amyloid-PET study.

Alzheimers Res Ther

November 2023

Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC Location VUmc, 1081 HZ, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: The mismatch between the limited availability versus the high demand of participants who are in the pre-dementia phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a bottleneck for clinical studies in AD. Nevertheless, potential enrollment barriers in the pre-dementia population are relatively under-reported. In a large European longitudinal biomarker study (the AMYPAD-PNHS), we investigated main enrollment barriers in individuals with no or mild symptoms recruited from research and clinical parent cohorts (PCs) of ongoing observational studies.

Performance of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T in predicting major cardiovascular events in patients admitted to the emergency department for syncope with normal ECG: An observational prospective study.

Arch Cardiovasc Dis

October 2023

Emergency Department, University Hospital of Toulouse, 31059 Toulouse, France; Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health Research (CERPOP), Inserm UMR 1027, Toulouse, France; Toulouse III - Paul-Sabatier University, 31330 Toulouse, France.

Introduction: History of syncope, clinical examination and electrocardiographic (ECG) findings are fundamental to assess the risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients attending the emergency department (ED) for syncope. However, in the absence of abnormal clinical examination findings or an abnormal ECG in the ED, transient rhythm or conduction disorders may not be safely excluded, hence predicting MACE remains challenging. High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) may be a useful tool in this context.

Introduction: Current guidelines for patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain without ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) on ECG are based on serial troponin measurements. A clinical tool able to identify very low-risk patients who could forgo a troponin test and low-risk patients requiring only one troponin measurement would be of great interest. To do so, the HEAR and HEART score, standing for history, ECG, age, risk factors±troponin were prospectively assessed, but not combined and implemented in clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • Z-drugs, commonly used to treat insomnia, may increase the likelihood of falls among elderly residents due to their impact on balance.
  • A study of 800 nursing home participants revealed that certain factors, like low calf circumference and the use of Z-drugs, were linked to an increased risk of falling.
  • The findings suggest that while Z-drugs are associated with falls, alternative sleep aids should be considered to protect resident safety.
