Background And Objectives: Neuroimaging studies have so far identified structural changes in individuals with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) when compared with controls. However, the underlying mechanisms of drug-resistant JME remain unknown. In this study, we aimed at characterizing the structural underpinnings of drug-resistant JME using MRI-derived cortical morphologic markers.

Patients with chronic peripheral neuropathy suffer greatly and their quality of life is often restricted. Drug therapy can be accompanied by undesirable side effects and intolerances, or the hoped-for effect does not materialize. Therefore, in addition to drug therapy, attempts are also made to treat the physical symptoms with complementary procedures.

Introduction: Climate change presents a significant risk for the mental and physical health of young people. In order to identify and properly care for potential mental health impairments from extreme weather events, the relevance of these impairments must be assessed as high by the professional groups providing care for children and adolescents. This raises the question of which factors influence the individual relevance assessment of caretaking professionals?
Methods: Data was collected creating and conducting a Germany-wide online questionnaire via LimeSurvey.

Multilocular pain syndromes with advanced chronification lead to a significant reduction in the quality of life of patients. The administration of cannabis is currently being discussed in the context of therapy-resistant pain and increasing opiate abuse. In this case study, possible side effects from the administration of a cannabis extract tetrahydrocannabinol:cannabidiol are examined.

Patients with chronic wounds (leg ulcers, decubitus, and diabetic foot ulcers) suffer from marked restrictions in their quality of life and can often no longer adequately carry out their everyday tasks. The need for nursing and medical care increases when other illnesses and complaints are present at the same time. Qualified wound care and the treatment of comorbidities are therefore of particular importance.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is rapidly spreading across the globe. Elderly patients with multiple pre-existing conditions are at a higher risk. This case study describes acute inpatient treatment of a COVID-19 patient with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, kidney complications, heart failure, chronic pain, depression, and other comorbidities in an isolation ward without mechanical ventilation.

Background: In rare disorders diagnosis may be delayed due to limited awareness and unspecific presenting symptoms. Herein, we address the issue of diagnostic delay in Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA), a genetic disorder usually caused by homozygous GAA-repeat expansions.
Methods: Six hundred eleven genetically confirmed FRDA patients were recruited within a multicentric natural history study conducted by the EFACTS (European FRDA Consortium for Translational Studies, ClinicalTrials.

Previous research has suggested reduced parasympathetic cardiac regulation during cognitive activity in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, little is known about possible abnormalities in sympathetic control and cardiovascular reactivity. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of autonomic cardiovascular control in the context of executive functions in MDD.

Trait worry refers to a tendency toward increased vigilance to threat and reduced tolerance of uncertainty. While it has been established as a risk factor of general morbidity, knowledge about autonomic regulation in trait worry remains scarce. This study investigated parasympathetic cardiac control in trait worry, in the context of attentional focus.

The cardiac defense response (CDR) to intense auditory stimulation is characterized by two acceleration-deceleration heart rate (HR) components. This study investigated contributions of sympathetic cardiac control to habituation and recovery of the CDR. Fifty-six healthy subjects were presented with noise stimuli eliciting the CDR.

The systematic use of evidence to inform healthcare decisions, particularly health technology assessment (HTA), has gained increased recognition. HTA has become a standard policy tool for informing decision makers who must manage the entry and use of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other technologies (including complex interventions) within health systems, for example, through reimbursement and pricing. Despite increasing attention to HTA activities, there has been no attempt to comprehensively synthesize good practices or emerging good practices to support population-based decision-making in recent years.

In addition to symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, reduced drive, or mood disturbance, individuals with chronic low blood pressure (hypotension) frequently report cognitive complaints. While attentional deficits have been empirically confirmed, it is still unknown whether the impairments also encompass executive functions. This study investigated cerebral blood flow modulations in hypotension during a precued antisaccade/prosaccade task requiring the executive function of proactive inhibition in addition to preparatory attention.

While impairments in executive functions have been well established in major depressive disorder (MDD), specific deficits in proactive control have scarcely been studied so far. Proactive control refers to cognitive processes during anticipation of a behaviorally relevant event that facilitate readiness to react. In this study, cerebral blood flow responses were investigated in MDD patients during a precued antisaccade task requiring preparatory attention and proactive inhibition.

In addition to mood disturbance, as well as motivational and somatic symptoms, patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently experience impairments in attention and cognitive control. This study investigated cerebral blood flow modulations during proactive control in MDD, which refers to cognitive processes occurring during anticipation of a behaviourally relevant event. Using functional transcranial Doppler sonography, blood flow velocities in the middle cerebral arteries of both hemispheres were recorded in 40 individuals with MDD and 40 healthy participants during a pre-cued mental arithmetic task.

Deficiencies in cerebral blood flow regulation may contribute to this impairment. This study investigated cerebral blood flow modulations during proactive control in hypotension.

Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) have often tried many outpatient treatments, and breakthrough pain frequently stops them from performing everyday tasks and participating in society. FM-pain that has become chronic, therefore, affects quality of life. This case study describes the administration of interdisciplinary inpatient pain therapy due to a primary diagnosis of fibromyalgia with integrated complementary medicine.
