Current medical guidelines consider pregnant women with COVID-19 to be a high-risk group. Since physiological gestation downregulates the immunological response to maintain "maternal-fetal tolerance", SARS-CoV-2 infection may constitute a potentially threatening condition to both the mother and the fetus. To establish the immune profile in pregnant COVID-19+ patients, a cross-sectional study was conducted.

While several studies have previously described the levels of one-carbon metabolism-related micronutrients in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and their neonates, the results in these literature reports have been contradictory. We hypothesized that the concentrations of micronutrients involved in the one-carbon cycle are altered in pregnant women and their neonates by GDM, and that these changes could further modify the neonatal anthropometry. Micronutrient levels were measured in 123 pregnant women with normal glucose levels (M-ND) and their neonates (N-ND), as well as in 54 pregnant women with gestational diabetes (M-GDM) and their neonates (M-GDM).

Urinary tract infections (UTI) during pregnancy are frequently associated with hypertensive disorders, increasing the risk of perinatal morbidity. Calcitriol, vitamin D's most active metabolite, has been involved in blood pressure regulation and prevention of UTIs, partially through modulating vasoactive peptides and antimicrobial peptides, like cathelicidin. However, nothing is known regarding the interplay between placental calcitriol, cathelicidin, and maternal blood pressure in UTI-complicated pregnancies.

Introduction: Amniotic fluid (AF) interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration has been associated to preterm delivery and perinatal morbidity and mortality in women with preterm labor and intact membranes. Nevertheless, the clinical significance of this biomarker of intra-amniotic inflammation (IAI) is still unclear due in part to the paucity of large studies.

Methods: AF IL-6 concentrations were determined in 452 consecutive women with preterm labor and intact membranes, categorized into 3 groups: 302 without IAI (IL-6 of <2.

Prolactin modifies the in vitro LPS-induced chemotactic capabilities in human fetal membranes at the term of gestation.

Am J Reprod Immunol

August 2021

Departamento de Fisiología y Desarrollo Celular, Instituto Nacional de Perinatología "Isidro Espinosa de los Reyes", Ciudad de México, México.

Problem: Immune responses of fetal membranes involve the production of chemoattractant mediators causing infiltration of maternal and fetal leukocytes, intrauterine inflammation and potentially the disruption of maternal-fetal tolerance. Prolactin (PRL) has deep immunoregulatory effects in the fetal-maternal interface. We aimed to test the in vitro PRL effect upon chemotactic capacities of human fetal membranes.

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (L.J.S.-P., K.L.R.-V.), UMAE-Hospital de Ginecología y Obstetricia "Luis Castelazo Ayala", Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Ciudad de México; Research Unit in Thrombosis, Hemostasia and Atherogenesis, HGR No.1 "Dr. Carlos Mac Gregor", IMSS.

Preeclampsia is characterized by angiogenic imbalance (AI), sFlt-1 (soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1)/PlGF (placental growth factor) is useful for its diagnosis and prediction of adverse outcomes, but the relationship among the degrees of AI as assessed by this ratio with the correct diagnosis, clinical characteristics, and outcomes in women with clinical diagnosis of preeclampsia are unclear. We studied 810 women with clinical diagnosis of preeclampsia. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on their degree of AI, evaluated by the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio: no AI (≤38), mild AI (>38-<85), and severe AI (≥85).

Blau syndrome (BS) is a rare, chronic autoinflammatory disease with onset before age 4 and mainly characterised by granulomatous arthritis, recurrent uveitis, and skin rash. Sporadic (also known as early-onset sarcoidosis) or familial BS is caused by gain-of-function mutations in the gene, which encodes for a multi-task protein that plays a crucial role in the innate immune defense. We report on three Mexican patients clinically diagnosed with BS who exhibited a likely pathogenic variant in as revealed by whole-exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing: two variants (c.
