Promising role of reduced-toxicity hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (PART-I).

Stem Cell Rev Rep

December 2012

Cell Therapy Centre & Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Center, Jalan Yaacob Latif, Bandar Tun Razak, 56000 Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Article Synopsis
  • Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) can potentially cure hematological malignancies, but high rates of transplantation-related mortality limit its use mainly to young and healthy patients.
  • Recent findings show that donor cells can fight cancer even without high-dose chemotherapy, leading to interest in reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens for older or sicker patients who were previously ineligible for HSCT.
  • While RIC has lower mortality rates, it tends to have higher relapse rates; ongoing studies aim to identify which patients benefit most and find ways to enhance the graft-versus-malignancy effect without increasing toxicity.*

Iatrogenic ureteric injuries are rare complications of abdomino-pelvic surgery but associated with high morbidity from infection and possible loss of renal function. A successful repair is related to the timing of diagnosis, site of injury and method of repair. This study was a retrospective review of outcomes of iatrogenic ureteric injury and factors contributing to successful operative repair.

The prevalence of hypertension in Malaysia is alarmingly high. The National Survey in 2006 showed 43% of people aged ≥30 had hypertension and among treated patients, only 26% reached the target blood pressure (BP) of <140/90 mmHg. We evaluated BP control in tertiary institutions in Malaysia and the difference in hypertension control between genders and within specific cardiovascular risk factor groups.

Chlorella vulgaris (CV) has been reported to have antioxidant and anticancer properties. We evaluated the effect of CV on apoptotic regulator protein expression in liver cancer-induced rats. Male Wistar rats (200~250 g) were divided into eight groups: control group (normal diet), CDE group (choline deficient diet supplemented with ethionine in drinking water to induce hepatocarcinogenesis), CV groups with three different doses of CV (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg body weight), and CDE groups treated with different doses of CV (50, 150, and 300 mg/kg body weight).
