Tannic Acid Modulates Voltage-gated K+ Channels to Promote Neuritogenesis in Neuronal N2A Cells.

In a previous report, we showed that voltage-gated K+ (Kv) Kv1 and Kv2 channels are involved in cAMP-induced neuritogenesis of mouse neuronal N2A cells. In this report, we examined the effects of tannic acid (TA) on Kv channels and neuritogenesis in N2A cells. TA (15 μM) mildly enhanced Kv currents at -30 to -20 mV but strongly inhibited Kv currents at higher voltages, causing a preferential activation of currents at low voltages.

What are family caregivers' experiences of coordinating end-of-life care at home? A narrative review.

Objectives: People with life-limiting diseases, who are no longer receiving active or curable treatment, often state their preferred place of care and death as the home. This requires coordinating a multidisciplinary approach, using available health and social care services to synchronize care. Family caregivers are key to enabling home-based end-of-life support; however, the 2 elements that facilitate success - coordination and family caregiver - are not necessarily associated as being intertwined or one and the same.

The object is to objectively identify the 100 most influential scientific publications in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and provide an analysis of their main characteristics. The Clarivate Analytics Web of Knowledge database was used to obtain data and metrics of TKA research. The search list was sorted by the number of citations, and articles were included or excluded based on relevance to TKA.

Schistosomiasis treatment in young children: a welcome step towards deployment of the paediatric praziquantel formulation.

It is an awkward fact that effective public health control of schistosomiasis in Africa has yet to deliver a fully comprehensive intervention for appropriate anthelmintic treatment of those preschool-age children and infants with active infection(s) and/or insidious disease. Over the last decade, despite the steady progress of the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium in developing a monoenantiomeric oral dispersible tablet, future challenges remain in securing its deployment and implementation at scale. This commentary provides a forward-looking critique for the international community, reminding us of this unfortunate treatment gap, and seeks to encourage commensurate action on ameliorating this overlooked medical inequity.

Elf autoencoder for unsupervised exploration of flat-band materials using electronic band structure fingerprints.

Two-dimensional materials with flat electronic bands are promising for realising exotic quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity and nontrivial topology. However, exploring their vast chemical space is a significant challenge. Here we introduce elf, an unsupervised convolutional autoencoder that encodes electronic band structure images into fingerprint vectors, enabling the autonomous clustering of materials by electronic properties beyond traditional chemical paradigms.

A comparison of Project Servator and routine stop and search outcomes in the city of London.

Project Servator is a strategic method of policing designed to deter, detect and disrupt a wide range of criminal activity including terrorism. This paper is the first empirical study to evaluate the stop and search aspect of Servator deployments. We compare the outcomes of 3488 routine stop and searches and 510 Servator stop and searches to determine whether the stop and search tactics used in this initiative produce more positive outcomes than routine stop and searches.

Mid-term outcomes of elbow hemiarthroplasty using the triceps-on approach for comminuted distal humerus fractures.

Background: There has been an increasing interest in elbow hemiarthroplasty to circumvent the problems with total elbow arthroplasty for comminuted distal humerus fractures in the elderly. Therefore, this study aims to delve deeper into the relationship between children's fine motor skills and their various academic abilities through systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the current level of knowledge about lung cancer among urban residents in Sichuan Province and to assess its influence on their willingness to choose county-level or lower-level medical institutions for cancer screening.

Methods: A total of 31,184 urban residents of Sichuan Province were included in the cross-sectional study. Binary logistic regression and propensity score matching (PSM) were used to assess the influence effect.

We investigate HbA1c differences in a T1D cohort with higher than national average technology uptake where > 60% come from an ethnic minority and/or socioeconomically deprived population.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide and immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown favorable therapeutic effects in recurrent or metastatic or locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M/LA HNSCC). However, the effects of immunotherapy in HNSCC are still inconsistent because of complicating factors. This meta-analysis tries to provide a more precise assessment of the efficacy and safety of this integrated approach in HNSCC.

Background: The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) has shown that screening with low dose CT in high-risk population was associated with reduction in lung cancer mortality. These patients are also at high risk of coronary artery disease, and we used deep learning model to automatically detect, quantify and perform risk categorisation of coronary artery calcification score (CACS) from non-ECG gated Chest CT scans.

In recent years, DNA metabarcoding has been used for a more efficient assessment of bulk samples. However, there remains a paucity of studies examining potential disparities in species identification methodologies. Here, we explore the outcomes of diverse clustering and filtering techniques on data from a non-destructive metabarcoding approach, compared to species-level morphological identification of Brachycera (Diptera) and Hymenoptera of two bulk samples collected with Malaise traps.

This paper presents the findings from a survey on factors influencing the adoption of agricultural Decision Support Systems (DSS). Our study focuses on examining the influence of behavioural, socioeconomic and farm specific characteristics on DSS adoption. Using two structural equation models, we investigate how these factors influence the willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to adopt.

The study of such events in the millimeter and submillimeter is, however, still in its infancy. Submillimeter observations probe a variety of materials, such as optically thick dust, which are hard to study in other wavelengths.

Developing evidence for a national strategy for older adults in the criminal justice system: overview of the nominal group approach for this series of brief reports.

The number of people aged 50 and over entering the criminal justice system (CJS) in England and Wales is growing. This raises questions as to the suitability of the CJS to equitably accommodate individuals with complex illness or impairment, who might experience difficulties in cognitive function, frailty, and/or impaired mobility. Findings from the government, the third sector, and academic literature have highlighted the difficulties experienced by older adults in the CJS and those tasked with supporting them.

Older women in the criminal justice system: a brief report from a nominal group.

There are increasing numbers of older women in prison in England and Wales. The needs of older women in prison have been under researched and are often unmet. This paper explores staff and expert perspectives on the needs of older women in prison through a nominal group attended by six participants, including a consultant at the UK Health Security Agency; a General Practitioner; a postgraduate student completing a project on older women in prison; an academic researcher with expertise on older women in prison; a National Women's Health, Social Care, and Environment Review Group lead; and a HMMPS Diversity and Inclusion Lead.

The mental health of older adults in the criminal justice system: a brief report from a nominal group.

The number of older people in prison is increasing, and this group has significant mental health needs. Despite this, little research has evaluated mental healthcare for older prisoners, and examples of best practice are unknown. This paper explored staff experiences of supporting the mental health needs of older prisoners to identify existing forms of care provision, challenges to implementation, and areas for improvement.

Background: Chronic illness research has many challenges making research recruitment difficult. Despite reports of facilitators and barriers to research recruitment challenges remain. The reporting of research strategies and their impact on recruitment and subsequent randomised control trials is not sufficient.

Lateralisation in reverse shoulder arthroplasty - A narrative review.

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has witnessed a significant advancement with the introduction of lateralisation techniques, aiming to enhance shoulder function and implant durability. Traditional medialised designs, following Grammont's principles, have encountered challenges such as scapular notching, reduced rotational strength, and instability. In contrast, lateralisation methods, which reposition the joint center of rotation laterally on the glenoid, humerus, or both, seek to improve deltoid leverage, optimize the rotator cuff muscles' length-tension relationship, and enhance joint stability.
