An "Engram-Centric" Approach to Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) and Other Acute-Onset Amnesias.

Neurol Int

January 2025

Department of Brain Repair & Rehabilitation, Institute of Neurology, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, UK.

The differential diagnosis of acute-onset amnesia includes transient global amnesia (TGA), transient epileptic amnesia (TEA), and functional (or psychogenic) amnesia. The most common of these, TGA, is a rare but well-described condition characterised by a self-limited episode of dense anterograde amnesia with variable retrograde amnesia. Although the clinical phenomenology of TGA is well described, its pathogenesis is not currently understood, thus preventing the development of evidence-based therapeutic recommendations.

We used density functional theory with a hybrid functional to investigate the structure and properties of [4H] (hydrogarnet) defects in -quartz as well as the reactions of these defects with electron holes and extra hydrogen atoms and ions. The results demonstrate the depassivation mechanisms of hydrogen-passivated silicon vacancies in -quartz, providing a detailed understanding of their stability, electronic properties, and behaviour in different charge states. While fully hydrogen passivated silicon vacancies are electrically inert, the partial removal of hydrogen atoms activates these defects as hole traps, altering the defect states and influencing the electronic properties of the material.

In Situ TEM Study of Electrical Property and Mechanical Deformation in MoS/Graphene Heterostructures.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Physical Science and Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Gokiso-cho, Showa-ku, Nagoya 466-8555, Japan.

We present a versatile method for synthesizing high-quality molybdenum disulfide (MoS) crystals on graphite foil edges via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This results in MoS/graphene heterostructures with precise epitaxial layers and no rotational misalignment, eliminating the need for transfer processes and reducing contamination. Utilizing in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) equipped with a nano-manipulator and tungsten probe, we mechanically induce the folding, wrinkling, and tearing of freestanding MoS crystals, enabling the real-time observation of structural changes at high temporal and spatial resolutions.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in species, particularly and , poses a significant public health threat. These bacteria, which are commonly found in livestock, poultry, companion animals, and wildlife, are the leading causes of foodborne illnesses, often transmitted through contaminated poultry. Extensive exposure to antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine creates selection pressure, driving resistance through mechanisms such as point mutations, horizontal gene transfer, and efflux pumps.

Indoor residual spraying (IRS) and the use of insecticide-treated bednets for malaria vector control have contributed substantially to a reduction in malaria disease burden. However, these control tools have important shortcomings including being donor-dependent, expensive, and often failing because of insufficient uptake. We assessed the safety and efficacy of a user-friendly, locally tailored malaria vector control approach dubbed "Hut Decoration for Malaria Control" (HD4MC) based on the incorporation of a WHO-approved insecticide, Actellic 300 CS, into a customary hut decoration practice in rural Uganda where millions of the most vulnerable and malaria-prone populations live in mud-walled huts.
