Glass-confined carbon dots: transparent afterglow materials with switchable TADF and RTP.

The confined synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) in solid matrixes is a promising avenue for developing new afterglow materials. Benefiting from the advantages of the sol-gel preparation of nanoporous glass, we report transparent glass-confined CDs with tunable afterglow luminescence. Switchable thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of CDs were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature and ion doping.

Integrated analysis of genome-wide copy number variation and exome-wide rare variation identified novel loci for rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: The genetic underpinnings of RA remain partially elucidated, motivating our exploration of copy number variations (CNV) and rare variations in the pathogenesis of RA.

Methods: We conducted an integrated analysis of the genome-wide landscape of CNV and exome-wide rare variation associations with RA in the UK Biobank. To strengthen our findings, we corroborated the results by the differentially expressed genes identified from gene expression profiles of synovial tissue of RA patients and health controls.

Individualized Hyaluronidase-Facilitated Subcutaneous Immunoglobulin 10% Administration in Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy: The Nurse's Role.

Hyaluronidase-facilitated subcutaneous immunoglobulin (fSCIG) 10% offers potential improvements in patient independence and tolerability versus intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) when used for the treatment of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP). fSCIG 10% also requires less frequent infusions and fewer infusion sites than conventional subcutaneous immunoglobulin (subcutaneous immunoglobulin without hyaluronidase). The ADVANCE-CIDP 1 study demonstrated fSCIG 10% efficacy and safety in preventing CIDP relapse and positive responses from patients in terms of satisfaction and treatment preference.

Psychometric validation of the Chronic Ocular Pain Questionnaire (COP-Q).

Background: The Chronic Ocular Pain Questionnaire (COP-Q) is a newly developed patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure intended to assess symptoms and impacts associated with Chronic Ocular Surface Pain (COSP). This study assessed the psychometric properties of the COP-Q to determine the adequacy of the COP-Q as a 'fit-for-purpose' instrument to derive trial endpoints for future clinical studies in COSP.

Methods: Patients with COSP completed the COP-Q daily for four weeks on an electronic, touch-screen, tablet device as part of a longitudinal, observational study in the United States (N = 124).

This bottleneck is particularly inhibitory for peptide and nucleic acid macromolecule drug delivery strategies, especially when aiming to target wounded, infected, and poorly perfused tissues of significant volume and geometry. Methods to drive fluid-flow or to enhance physical distribution of such formulations after local administration in accessible tissues (skin, eye, intestine) would be transformative in realizing the potential of such therapeutics.

However, real-world evidence on naldemedine use in the United States is limited, particularly in older adults.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a serious invasive crop pest and threat to food security. Conventional pest control approaches using chemical pesticides can lead to adverse environmental and human health problems calling for safer alternative pest management options. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by plants constitutively and in response to herbivory have been shown to enhance ecologically benign biocontrol alternatives to chemical insecticides for pest management.

Identification of effect modifiers using a stratified Mendelian randomization algorithmic framework.

Mendelian randomization (MR) is a technique which uses genetic data to uncover causal relationships between variables. With the growing availability of large-scale biobank data, there is increasing interest in elucidating nuances in these relationships using MR. Stratified MR techniques such as doubly-ranked MR (DRMR) and residual stratification MR have been developed to identify nonlinearity in causal relationships.

Background: Achaete-Scute complex homolog 1 (ASCL1) is a multi-faceted pro-neural transcription factor, playing a role in several processes during embryonic development and into adulthood, including neural progenitor proliferation and neuronal differentiation. This versatility is achieved through tightly controlled expression of ASCL1, either via integrating intracellular signalling cues or stabilisation at the protein level. The role of kinases in ASCL1-mediated neurogenesis is emerging, but to date few kinases have been attributed to act directly or indirectly on ASCL1.

Background: Fatigue is a common non-motor symptom (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting up to 50% of patients. It is suggested that PD-related fatigue may contribute to the burden perceived by caregivers.

Few studies explore the burden of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). We aimed to investigate disease burden in mild-to-moderate AD using real-world data from adults with AD and their physicians in the United States. Data were drawn from the Adelphi Real World AD Disease Specific Programme™, a cross-sectional survey of physicians and their patients with AD in real-world clinical practice in the US from November 2014 to February 2015.

Associations of cMIND Diet with depressive and anxiety symptoms among old people in China: a nationwide study.

Purpose: The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet is a novel dietary approach that exhibits neuroprotective benefits. Studies have found that the MIND diet can effectively reduce the risk of depression and anxiety, but the relationship between them is unclear among older Chinese people. The objective of this research was to explore the association of the MIND diet with depression and anxiety among elderly Chinese individuals.

IMproving Preclinical Assessment of Cardioprotective Therapies (IMPACT): a small animal acute myocardial infarction randomized-controlled multicenter study on the effect of ischemic preconditioning.

Although many cardioprotective interventions have been shown to limit infarct size (IS), in preclinical animal studies of acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI), their clinical translation to patient benefit has been largely disappointing. A major factor is the lack of rigor and reproducibility in the preclinical studies. To address this, we have established the IMproving Preclinical Assessment of Cardioprotective Therapies (IMPACT) small animal multisite acute myocardial infarction (AMI) network, with centralized randomization and blinded core laboratory IS analysis, and have validated the network using ischemic preconditioning (IPC).

Aims/hypothesis: Biennial, as opposed to annual, screening for diabetic retinopathy was recently introduced within England for those considered to be at 'low risk'. This study aims to examine the impact that annual vs biennial screening has on equitable risk of diagnosis of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) among people at 'low risk' and to develop an amelioration protocol.

Methods: In the North East London Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (NELDESP), 105,083 people without diabetic retinopathy were identified on two consecutive screening visits between January 2012 and September 2023.

Occupational Therapy Pre-Operative Intervention for Total Hip Replacement Patients; A Qualitative Enquiry.

This project aimed to explore the experiences of occupational therapists working in a specialist orthopedic hospital. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with eight occupational therapists working with total hip replacement patients, in an orthopedic hospital within the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) as part of a service review project. The data was recorded and transcribed and analyzed using the Reflexive Thematic Analysis.

Long-term safety and effectiveness of fenfluramine in children and adults with Dravet syndrome.

Objective: We analyzed the long-term safety and effectiveness of fenfluramine (FFA) in patients with Dravet syndrome (DS) in an open-label extension (OLE) study after participating in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or commencing FFA de novo as adults.

Methods: Patients with DS who participated in one of three RCTs or were 19 to 35 years of age and started FFA de novo were included. Key endpoints were: incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) in the safety population, and median percentage change in monthly convulsive seizure frequency (MCSF) from the RCT baseline to end of study (EOS) in the modified intent-to-treat (mITT) population.
