Purpose: To prospectively monitor the evolution of the resistome of OXA-48-producing Klebsiella species in a patient with long-term colonization, with a particular focus into the plasmid dynamics and the evolution of ceftazidime/avibactam resistance.

Methods: All OXA-48-producing Klebsiella spp. isolates from a single patient admitted to a hospital during seven months were prospectively collected.

is the main cause of bacterial gastroenteritis and a public health problem worldwide. Little information is available on the genotypic characteristics of human in Spain. This study is based on an analysis of the resistome, virulome, and phylogenetic relationship, antibiogram prediction, and antimicrobial susceptibility of 114 human isolates of from a tertiary hospital in southern Spain from October 2020 to June 2023.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a very aggressive primary skin tumour with a high risk of local recurrences and lymphatic and distant metastases. The frequent association between this carcinoma and other skin tumour and lymphoid malignancies, its similar cellular morphology with leukocytes, and limited infiltration in bone marrow constituted a challenging diagnosis. We report an unusual case of an 82-year-old male who simultaneously presented Merkel cell carcinoma and acute myeloid lymphoma.

Metabolic biomarkers, particularly glycated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose, are pivotal in the diagnosis and control of diabetes mellitus. Despite their importance, they exhibit limitations in assessing short-term glucose variations. In this study, we propose labile hemoglobin as an additional biomarker, providing insightful perspectives into these fluctuations.

Little is known about the clonality of consecutive OXA-48 producing-Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from the same patient and the possibility of changes in their virulomes over time. We studied the molecular characteristics of twenty OXA-48-producing K. pneumoniae consecutive isolates from six patients using whole-genome sequencing.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a neurovascular disease produced by extravasation of blood to the subarachnoid space after rupture of the cerebral vessels. After bleeding, the immune response is activated. The role of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in this response is a current subject of research.

Objectives: To evaluate overall and recurrence-progression rate-adjusted concordance of treatment prescription in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) of an app based on the best available scientific evidence and the urologist's opinion.

Methods: Development of an app (APPv) specifically designed for the treatment and follow-up of NMIBC and validation of the proposed APPv treatment endpoint by means of a prospective double-blind observational concordance study of related samples in 100 patients with initial or successive histological diagnosis of NMIBC.

Results: The treatment prescribed by the urologist agrees with that proposed by the APPv in 64% of cases (kappa index 0.

Introduction: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is a complex syndrome, without a clearly defined etiology that encompasses different entities, such as interstitial cystitis. This leads to difficulties in establishing a precise definition, obtaining accurate prevalence data, and defining diagnostic criteria and standardized assessment methods. Moreover, there is no consensus regarding the treatment of BPS.

Pulmonary hypertension in adults with congenital heart disease. Clinical phenotypes and outcomes in the advanced pulmonary vasodilator era.

Heart Lung

May 2022

Unidad de Cardiopatías Congénitas del Adulto, Hospital General Universitario Virgen del Rocio, Instituto de BioMedicina de Sevilla (IBIS) y CIBERCV, Avenida Manuel Siurot S/N, Sevilla 41013, Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Mortality rates for adults with pulmonary hypertension associated with congenital heart disease (PAH-CHD) are high, and this study aims to identify factors predicting death and the impact of treatment.
  • A retrospective study followed 103 adults with PAH-CHD for approximately 8.6 years, categorizing patients by shunt type and analyzing survival rates and predictors of death using regression models.
  • Key findings indicated that pre-tricuspid patients had the highest mortality rates, with significant predictors of poor outcomes including pericardial effusion and oxygen saturation; the study suggests that earlier and more aggressive treatment may be necessary for those in advanced disease stages.

Cancers (Basel)

September 2021

Department of Medical Oncology, Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía, IMIBIC, Universidad de Córdoba, CIBERONC, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, 14004 Córdoba, Spain.

Trifluridine/tipiracil is currently approved for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) refractory to available therapies. However, there is no consensus on factors that predict treatment outcomes in daily practice. We assessed the early clinical experience with trifluridine/tipiracil in Spain and potential survival markers.

Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department, Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Universitat de Barcelona, 08950 Barcelona, Spain.

Congenital heart disease is a group of pathologies characterized by structural malformations of the heart or great vessels. These alterations occur during the embryonic period and are the most frequently observed severe congenital malformations, the main cause of neonatal mortality due to malformation, and the second most frequent congenital malformations overall after malformations of the central nervous system. The severity of different types of congenital heart disease varies depending on the combination of associated anatomical defects.

: Many patients sensitized to mites remain symptomatic and uncontrolled despite traditional treatment. Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has demonstrated to reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, the need for additional drug treatments, and to reduce the number of moderate and severe exacerbations in patients with allergic asthma caused by mites that had not been adequately controlled.: After reviewing the most recent literature, a scientific committee composed by five pneumologists experts in asthma proposed 41 items that addressed the diagnosis of allergic asthma caused by mites, the role of house dust mite (HDM) SLIT tablet in the therapeutic plan and in the control of the disease, and the profile of patients with asthma candidates for this therapy.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THE TOPIC?: Our present understanding of mechanical restraint is heterogenous, largely due to the important differences between countries/regions. In Spain, the use of this restrictive practice is not regulated, nor is its use protocolized. Previous studies that have investigated the impact of organizational factors and changes in these protocols are often short and not conducted within a framework designed to establish a long-term plan for reducing the use of mechanical restraint.
