J Transl Med

November 2023

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UCSI University, Bandar Springhill, 71010, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an aggressive malignancy with high propensity for lymphatic spread and distant metastasis. It is prominent as an endemic malignancy in Southern China and Southeast Asia regions. Studies on NPC pathogenesis mechanism in the past decades such as through Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) infection and oncogenic molecular aberrations have explored several potential targets for therapy and diagnosis.

The present study focused on preparing and characterizing magnetite-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hybrid nanoparticles using Acanthophora spicifera marine algae extract as a reducing agent. Various analytical techniques, including UV-Visible spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, were used to characterize the nanoparticles. The results showed the successful synthesis of nanoparticles with a characteristic color change and absorption peak at 400 nm in UV-Visible spectrometry.

Dielectric properties of urine in relation to bladder cancer.

Phys Eng Sci Med

March 2024

Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Many studies have investigated the dielectric properties of human and animal tissues, particularly to differentiate between normal cells and tumors. However, these studies are invasive as tissue samples have to be excised to measure the properties. This study aims to investigate the dielectric properties of urine in relation to bladder cancer, which is safe and non-invasive to patients.

The impact of an online educational game on breast cancer awareness among university female students, Malaysia: a pilot study.

BMC Cancer

October 2023

Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UCSI University Kuala Lumpur Campus, Kuala Lumpur, 56000, Malaysia.

Background: Breast cancer is one of the world's most prevalent cancer and the most common type of cancer in Malaysia. Interestingly, breast cancer in young women is more aggressive compared to older women and the survival rate among these groups of individuals is poor. Thus, breast cancer awareness is essential among young women as early detection is possible and treatment will be effective during which the disease is curable.

Green finance and environmental, social, and governance: evidence from Chinese listed companies.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

November 2023

Faculty of Business and Management, UCSI University, 56000, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In recent years, academics have paid more attention to green finance, and public companies have reached a broad consensus on the concept of timely environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure. Due to the close relationship between green finance and ESG, this presents an opportunity to determine whether green finance compels companies to actively disclose ESG. The sample for this study consists of China's non-financial A-share listed companies from 2010 to 2021, and the empirical findings demonstrate that green finance can positively influence the ESG performance of listed companies.

Objective: The SLIT and NTRK-like 1 (SLITRK1) gene mutation and striatal cholinergic interneurons (ChIs) loss are associated with Tourette syndrome (TS). ChIs comprise only 1 to 2% of striatal neurons but project widely throughout the stratum to impact various striatal neurotransmission, including TS-related dopaminergic transmission. Here, we link striatal Slitrk1, ChI function, and dopaminergic transmission and their associations with TS-like tic behaviors.

Targeting the crosstalk of epigenetic modifications and immune evasion in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Cell Biol Toxicol

December 2023

State Key Laboratory of Systems Medicine for Cancer, Renji-Med X Clinical Stem Cell Research Center, Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Pudong New District, Shanghai, 200127, China.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct type of head and neck cancer that is highly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. EBV acts as an epigenetic driver in NPC tumorigenesis, reprogramming the viral and host epigenomes to regulate viral latent gene expression, and creating an environment conducive to the malignant transformation of nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. Targeting epigenetic mechanisms in pre-clinical studies has been shown promise in eradicating tumours and overcoming immune resistance in some solid tumours.

Facile Preparation of Durable and Eco-Friendly Superhydrophobic Filter with Self-Healing Ability for Efficient Oil/Water Separation.

Membranes (Basel)

September 2023

Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Technology & Built Environment, UCSI University Kuala Lumpur Campus, Jalan Mandarina Damai 1, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur 56000, Malaysia.

The superhydrophobic feature is highly desirable for oil/water separation (OWS) operation to achieve excellent separation efficiency. However, using hazardous materials in fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces is always the main concern. Herein, superhydrophobic filters were prepared via an eco-friendly approach by anchoring silica particles (SiO) onto the cotton fabric surface, followed by surface coating using natural material-myristic acid via a dip coating method.

Optimized surface-type impedimetric and capacitive proximity sensors have been fabricated on paper substrates by using rubbing-in technology. The orange dye (OD) and silicone glue (SG) composite-gel films were deposited on the zig-zag gap between two aluminum electrodes fixed on a paper (dielectric) substrate. The effect of proximity of various objects (receivers) on the impedance and the capacitance of the sensors was investigated.

In response to the growing concern for environmental pollution, two lanthanide compounds {[Ln(L)(HO)]·4HO} (where Ln = Tb and Gd, HL = 1-amino-2,4,6-benzene tricarboxylic acid) were synthesized using a -NH modified ligand and systematically characterized. Both compounds exhibit remarkable fluorescence response, adsorption of CrO ions, and photocatalytic degradation properties, as well as exceptional acid-base and thermal stability. Remarkably, the pH-dependent exhibits exceptional performance as a fluorescent probe for detecting Fe and CrO/CrO ions in aqueous solutions, while also serving as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for the detection of Cr, offering rapid response, high sensitivity, selectivity, and recoverability advantages in application.

Psychology originally defined parent-child conflict in terms of interpersonal relationships, where parent-child conflict is a process of inconsistent attitudes between parents and children that occurs in a family setting. For this end, we aims to investigate the influence of parental awareness on preschoolers' perception of parent-child conflict and the mediating role of preschoolers' self-esteem. This paper proposes a dynamic parent-child relationship discovery algorithm based on the impact of parent-child cooperation activities on preschool children's development.
