Introduction: Hip fractures may result from and contribute to accelerated biological aging. We aimed to evaluate the impact of hip fracture and its surgery on the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) index, a composite of peripheral protein markers where higher scores are thought to indicate greater levels of cellular senescence and accelerated aging.
Methods: We examined the SASP index in plasma over 12 weeks post-surgery and its prediction of long-term post-surgical functional outcomes.

Bone and teeth are comprised of carbonate-substituted apatites with cationic substitutions, like sodium and potassium. Cations substitute for calcium in the apatite lattice but it is unclear whether they substitute for Ca(1) or Ca(2). Cytoplasmic aggregation of the TAR-DNA binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43) is the hallmark of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Most ALS patients with TDP-43 aggregates in neurons and glia do not have mutations in the TDP-43 gene but contain aberrantly post-translationally modified TDP-43. Here, we found that a single acetylation-mimetic mutation (K82Q) near the TDP-43 minor Nuclear Localization Signal (NLS) box, which mimics a post-translational modification identified in an ALS patient, can lead to TDP-43 mislocalization to the cytoplasm and irreversible aggregation.

Reducing senescence burden through treatment with senolytic drugs or the use of genetically targeted models of senescent cell elimination in animals has shown positive results in the context of mitigating disease and age-associated inflammation.

Antibodies play a critical role in protection against influenza; yet titers and viral neutralization represent incomplete correlates of immunity. Instead, the ability of antibodies to leverage the antiviral power of the innate immune system has been implicated in protection from and clearance of influenza infection. Activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), by Angiotensin converting enzyme/Angiotensin II/Angiotensin receptor-1 (ACE/Ang II/AT1 R) axis elicits amyloid deposition and cognitive impairment. Furthermore, ACE2 induced release of Ang-(1-7) binds with the Mas receptor and autoinhibits ACE/Ang II/AT1 axis activation. Objective: Produce prescriptions have shown promise in improving diabetes care, although most studies have used small samples or lacked controls. Our objective was to evaluate the impacts of a produce prescription program on glycemic control for patients with diabetes.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of magnesium on cellular adhesion and proliferation of human subacromial bursal tissue (SBT), osteoblasts, and tenocytes on nonabsorbable suture tape commonly used in rotator cuff surgery.
Methods: Human SBT cells, primary human osteoblasts (HOBs), and primary human tenocytes were isolated from tissue samples and cultured in growth media. Commercially available collagen-coated nonabsorbable suture tape was cut into one-inch pieces, placed into 48-well culture dishes, sterilized under ultraviolet light, and treated with (+) or without (-) magnesium.

Magnesium is essential for cellular life, but how it is homeostatically controlled still remains poorly understood. Here, we report that members of CNNM family, which have been controversially implicated in both cellular Mg2+ influx and efflux, selectively bind to the TRPM7 channel to stimulate divalent cation entry into cells. Coexpression of CNNMs with the channel markedly increased uptake of divalent cations, which is prevented by an inactivating mutation to the channel's pore.

Background: The purpose was to compare knee kinematics in a cadaveric model of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair using an adjustable-loop femoral cortical suspensory (AL-CSF) or independent bundle suture anchor fixation (IB-SAF) with suture tape augmentation to a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) ACL reconstruction.
Methods: Twenty-seven cadaveric knees were randomly assigned to one of three surgical techniques: (1) ACL repair using the AL-CSF technique with suture tape augmentation, (2) ACL repair using the IB-SAF technique with suture tape augmentation, (3) ACL reconstruction using a BPTB autograft. Each specimen underwent three conditions according to the state of the ACL (native, proximal transection, repair/reconstruction) with each condition tested at four different angles of knee flexion (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°).
