Importance: Increasing the understanding of vaccine effectiveness (VE) against levels of severe influenza in children could help increase uptake of influenza vaccination and strengthen vaccine policies globally.
Objective: To investigate VE in children by severity of influenza illness.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This case-control study with a test-negative design used data from 8 participating medical centers located in geographically different US states in the New Vaccine Surveillance Network from November 6, 2015, through April 8, 2020.

Introduction: Neuroimaging has expanded our understanding of pediatric brain disorders in which white matter organization and connectivity are crucial to functioning. Paralleling the known pathobiology of many neurodevelopmental disorders, traumatic brain injury (TBI) in childhood can alter trajectories of brain development. Specifically, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies in TBI have demonstrated white matter (WM) abnormalities that suggest microstructural disruptions that may underlie atypical neurodevelopment.

Background: The heterogeneous clinical presentation of graft microvascular inflammation poses a major challenge to successful kidney transplantation. The effect of microvascular inflammation on allograft outcomes is unclear.

Recent genetic studies have revealed that hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a multi-system disorder associated with germline or mosaic variants within the PI3K-mTOR-GATOR1 signaling pathways. Patients with HME typically develop drug-resistant epilepsy necessitating extensive evaluation, hemispherectomy, and long-term management. We describe the role of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) for the diagnosis and management of recent patients with HME at UCLA who underwent hemispherectomy.

Introduction: Lack of knowledge of Early Intervention (EI) is a barrier to developmental delay (DD) management. We aimed to examine the feasibility of measuring pediatricians' knowledge of EI, determine the distribution of EI knowledge, and determine factors associated with increased EI knowledge.
Methods: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study with a convenience sample from a local American Academy of Pediatrics chapter to administer a survey with 10 multiple-choice questions regarding the EI referral process, evaluation process, eligibility criteria and fee structure.

This study examines school-aged children's well-being, and characterizes changes in school-related needs, from 2021 to 2022. This is a secondary analysis of a longitudinal cohort study, where a nationally representative sample of parents of school-aged children were surveyed in June 2021 and 2022.

Pathogenic variants in the cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) gene are associated with CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD), a severe X-linked developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. Deletions affecting the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of CDKL5, which involve the noncoding exon 1 and/or alternatively spliced first exons (exons 1a-e), are uncommonly reported. We describe genetic and phenotypic characteristics for 15 individuals with CDKL5 partial gene deletions affecting the 5' UTR.

Despite numerous studies on this complex interaction in adults, vertically acquired infections, which have distinct immunological and virological characteristics, remain relatively understudied.
Recent Findings: Disturbances, including prolonged exposure to HIV and antiretroviral therapy, significantly impact the gut microbiome, though isolating these effects from other influencing factors is challenging.

Objective: To establish the utility of long-term electroencephalogram (EEG) in forecasting epilepsy onset in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Study Design: A single-institution, retrospective analysis of children with ASD, examining long-term overnight EEG recordings collected over a period of 15 years, was conducted. Clinical EEG findings, patient demographics, medical histories, and additional Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule data were examined.

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals.

Background And Objective: CDKL5 deficiency disorder presents as a challenging condition with early-onset refractory seizures, severe developmental delays, and a range of other neurological symptoms. Our study aimed to explore the benefits and side effects of anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in managing seizures among individuals with CDKL5 deficiency disorder, drawing on data from the International CDKL5 Disorder Database.
Methods: Data for this retrospective cohort study were obtained from the International CDKL5 Disorder Database, which contains responses from a baseline questionnaire administered between 2012 and 2022 and a follow-up questionnaire administered between 2018 and 2019.

To examine the probability of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) reintervention following interrupted aortic arch (IAA) repair in neonates with LVOT obstruction (LVOTO) risk. This retrospective multicenter study included 150 neonates who underwent IAA repair (2003-2017); 100 of 150 (67%) had isolated IAA repair (with ventricular septal defect closure) and 50 of 150 (33%) had concomitant LVOT intervention: conal muscle resection (n = 16), Ross-Konno (n = 7), and Yasui operation (n = 27: single-stage n = 8, staged n = 19). Demographic and morphologic characteristics were reviewed.

Chronically transfused patients with sickle cell disease typically do not exhibit iron-mediated extrahepatic toxicity. However, we demonstrate that the pituitary gland is vulnerable to iron deposition, and it occurs regardless of other extrahepatic involvement. Severe pituitary siderosis is associated with early organ dysfunction.
