This study examined the relationships between varying levels of depressive symptoms and key dietary indicators of chronic disease risk, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and fruit and vegetable (F + V) consumption, among a racially/ethnically diverse urban population in Los Angeles County (LAC). Analyses were carried out using data from a 2012 cross-sectional health survey of 1401 low-income public health center clients. Participants with a high level of depressive symptoms consumed 30% more SSBs (IRR = 1.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) prevented premature mortality and improved the quality of life among people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH), such that now more than half of PLWH in the United States are 50 years of age and older. Increased longevity among PLWH has resulted in a significant rise in chronic, comorbid diseases. However, the implementation of guideline-based interventions for preventing, treating, and managing such age-related, chronic conditions among the HIV population is lacking.

Context: Chronic disease prevention initiatives have traditionally been structured to address a single disease, potentially limiting the scope of health impacts. In the past decade, initiatives have increasingly adopted a coordinated approach, in which multiple interventions are intended to work synergistically-often in a bounded geographic area-to address interrelated risk factors and diseases. However, despite increased interest in this coordinated approach, few examples exist of how coordination has been operationalized in local public health practice.

As part of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) in Los Angeles County (LAC), corner store conversions (CSCs) were an integral part of a broader, more coordinated effort to improve nutrition and to prevent obesity in low-income populations. To date, little is known about this experience in LAC. The present study addresses this gap by describing lessons learned from implementing the SNAP-Ed (SCSP) in this region.

Introduction: Despite numerous federal investments, chronic disease continues to disproportionately affect certain communities across the United States. Understanding the regional distribution (including any overlaps) of factors that extend beyond built and food environments, especially factors that may adversely affect chronic disease-related behaviors, is important. This case study of Los Angeles County's geospatial landscape sought to address these gaps in research and practice.

Introduction: Core facilities play crucial roles in carrying out the academic research mission by making available to researchers advanced technologies, facilities, or expertise that are unfeasible for most investigators to obtain on their own. To facilitate translational science through support of core services, the University of California, Los Angeles Clinical and Translational Science Institute (UCLA CTSI) created a Core Voucher program. The underlying premise is that by actively promoting interplay between researchers and core facilities, a dynamic feedback loop could be established that could enhance both groups, the productivity of the former and the relevance of the latter.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) induce molecular remission in the majority of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), but the persistence of CML stem cells hinders cure and necessitates indefinite TKI therapy. We report that CML stem cells upregulate the expression of pleiotrophin (PTN) and require cell-autonomous PTN signaling for CML pathogenesis in BCR/ABL+ mice. Constitutive PTN deletion substantially reduced the numbers of CML stem cells capable of initiating CML in vivo.

Classification systems can be useful for evaluating and communicating the impact of interventions. We describe how a typology was created to inform the development of a community intervention dose index (CIDI) intended to measure the strength of impacts attributed to multiple childhood obesity intervention strategies implemented in a large, diverse urban jurisdiction in the United States during 2000-2016. The categorization system was constructed via a three-stage process: (Stage 1) identify relevant constructs for categorizing intervention strategies; (Stage 2) review peer-reviewed literature and program requests for proposals to identify and integrate common attributes of intervention strategies based on Stage 1 constructs; and (Stage 3) vet the results from prior stages to develop a final version of the typology, slated for research application and for use in program improvement.

To provide a baseline of various driving behaviors and to identify opportunities for prevention of distracted driving during the infancy of state laws that prohibited cellphone use while operating a motor vehicle, the 2010-2011 Distracted Driving Survey collected information on multiple distracted driving behaviors from lower-income clients of three designated, multi-purpose public health centers in Los Angeles County. Descriptive and multivariable negative binomial regression analyses were performed to examine patterns of driving distractions using the Distracted Driving Survey dataset ( = 1,051). The most common distractions included talking to other passengers ( = 912, 86.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) launched the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (NEOP) Project in fall 2013. As the local arm of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed), this project partnered with faith-based organizations (FBOs) in Los Angeles County to implement policy, systems, and environmental change interventions (PSEs) at selected church sites, alongside the usual delivery of health education. A 2-part programmatic assessment was conducted to better understand how the NEOP Faith Based Project at one of the FBOs was implemented during the 2013-2016 SNAP-Ed funding cycle.

Although the California Department of Public Health has been delivering nutrition education for nearly two decades, the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) resources to advance policy, systems, and environmental change interventions (PSEs) to prevent obesity has been relatively recent. To date, most efforts to couple PSEs to conventional nutrition education have not been well-studied and as such, their lessons have not been used extensively in local planning. This special issue seeks to close this gap by sharing lessons from the planning and implementation of these efforts in Los Angeles County during the 2013-2016 SNAP-Ed funding cycle.

To better characterize and understand local investments made by prevention initiatives to address poor nutrition and obesity during 2010-2015, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health partnered with an evaluation firm in 2014 to conduct a context scan of nutrition education programs (NEs) and policy, systems, and environmental change interventions (PSEs) in Los Angeles County (LAC). Using fiscal year 2012-2013 (FY12-13) as a midpoint for a before/after comparison based in part on the timeline of the last USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) funding cycle, the scan included both SNAP-Ed and non-SNAP-Ed initiatives. Systematic searches of peer-reviewed and grey literature, relevant organizations' websites and materials, and results from 51 key stakeholder interviews, were completed to help develop a context scan database for LAC.

Categorization of terms/concepts/constructs that allows for better understanding and comparison of public health interventions is often lacking in program implementation and evaluation. A classification system such as a lexicon, when used appropriately, can help address this need. The present narrative describes a lexicon of policy, systems, and environmental change strategies (PSEs) that was developed and prototyped to aid local implementation of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) interventions in obesity prevention.

Healthy food marketing in the retail environment can be an important driver of fruit and vegetable purchases. In Los Angeles County, the (NEOP) program utilized this strategy to promote healthy eating among low-income families that shop at large retail chain stores. The present study assessed whether self-reported exposure to large retail NEOP interventions, including seeing at least one store visual, watching an in-store cooking demonstration, and/or seeing at least one program advertisement, were associated with increased fruit and vegetable purchases.
