Aim: To evaluate the superiority of coronally advanced flaps (CAFs) when used in combination with a xenogeneic collagen matrix (CMX) for root coverage of multiple adjacent gingival recessions.
Materials And Methods: Participants with at least 2 upper adjacent teeth exhibiting gingival recession depth ≥2 mm were recruited and randomized to CAF with (test) or without (control) CMX, respectively. Mean and complete root coverage, amount of keratinized tissue (KTw), gingival thickness (GThick) and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) were recorded at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a family of prokaryotic-derived biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymers known to exhibit neuroregenerative properties. In this work, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), P(3HB), and poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate), P(3HO), have been combined to form blend fibres for directional guidance of neuronal cell growth and differentiation. A 25:75 P(3HO)/P(3HB) blend (PHA blend) was used for the manufacturing of electrospun fibres as resorbable scaffolds to be used as internal guidance lumen structures in nerve conduits.

Background: Conventional treatment of destructive periodontal (gum) disease arrests the disease but does not usually regain the bone support or connective tissue lost in the disease process. Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) is a surgical procedure that specifically aims to regenerate the periodontal tissues when the disease is advanced and could overcome some of the limitations of conventional therapy.
Objectives: To assess the efficacy of GTR in the treatment of periodontal infra-bony defects measured against conventional surgery (open flap debridement (OFD)) and factors affecting outcomes.

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the strategic goals of planning for a functionally and aesthetically optimal dentate quality of life, and the role that teeth maintained through root canal treatment can play in such a plan. The perception that root-treated teeth should largely, and wherever possible, be discarded as a viable option is a seriously flawed judgment. The utility of root-treated teeth must be properly and critically discriminated as they can play a significant role in the long-term plan, despite having unique characteristics that must be accounted for.

Systemic AL amyloidosis is a cause of type 5 cardiorenal syndrome. Response to treatment is currently reported according to organ-specific amyloidosis consensus criteria (ACC), which are not validated in cardiorenal AL amyloidosis. Of 1000 patients prospectively enrolled into the UK ALchemy study, 318 (32%) had combined cardiac and renal amyloidotic organ dysfunction at diagnosis, among whom 199 (63%) died; median survival by Kaplan-Meier analysis was 18·5 months.

Objectives: Periodontitis (PD) and chronic migraine (CM) have been recently linked, and inflammatory processes and vascular endothelial changes are hypothesized as potential mediators of this relationship. The aim of this cross-sectional analysis was to investigate the potential association of PD with vascular systemic inflammation and complement activation in patients with CM.
Materials And Methods: Ninety-four chronic migraineurs underwent a full-mouth periodontal evaluation and a measure of PD activity and severity, namely the periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) was calculated for each patient.

Background: HPV-16-positive HNSCC and HPV-16-negative HNSCC have different clinical factors, representing distinct forms of cancers. The study aimed to identify patient-specific factors for HPV-16-positive HNSCC based on baseline clinical data.
Method: Factors associated with HPV-16-positive HNSCC were identified using the data from 210 patients diagnosed with HNSCC at University College of London Hospital between January 1, 2003, and April 30, 2015, inclusive.

This final chapter provides a commentary of what might be learned from this series of articles in relation to the 2017 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions and argues that future classifications should expand sections on nondental plaque-induced disease that will further patient care, education and research in periodontology, and allied subjects.

Oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions comprise a group of disorders of the oral mucosa that likely represent a common reaction pattern to 1 or more unknown antigens. The coexistence of hyperkeratotic striation/reticulation, varying degrees of mucosal inflammation from mild erythema to severe widespread ulceration, and a band-like infiltrate of mononuclear inflammatory cells including activated T lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells, are considered suggestive of oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions. Several classification systems of oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions have been attempted, although none seem to be comprehensive.

Background: Recently, a relationship was found between periodontitis and chronic migraine. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a key element in migraine pathophysiology. However, no information exists of the potential association between periodontal inflammation and CGRP in chronic migraine.

Patients presenting with severe hypodontia can be challenging to manage. They often present with significant spaces within the dental arches and the lack of permanent teeth can make anchorage control difficult. This case report demonstrates a novel technique for diastema closure in a 14-year-old with severe hypodontia.

Objectives: To investigate whether chlorhexidine mouthwash (CHX-MW), with an anti-discoloration system(ADS), is effective in preventing extrinsic tooth surface discoloration. Additionally, this paper seeks to evaluate whether CHX combined with an ADS maintains its efficacy with respect to reducing plaque and gingivitis scores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate self-reported periodontitis (PD) prevalence in migraineurs as well as to investigate the association between both diseases. A cross-sectional survey was carried out including patients diagnosed with migraine attending 12 Spanish Headache Units. We determined diagnosis of PD administering a validated self-reported questionnaire.

The rising incidence of antibiotic-resistant infections from contaminated surfaces in hospitals or implanted medical devices has led to increasing interest in new antibacterial surfaces. Photoactivatable surfaces that can generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species under exposure to ambient light is a promising approach to inactivation of surface-borne microorganisms. There is growing interest in the use of quantum dots (QDs) as light-harvesting agents for photobactericidal applications, but the cadmium in commonly used QDs will restrict clinical application.

Bone/cartilage interfacial tissue engineering needs to satisfy the differential properties and architectures of the osteochondral region. Therefore, biphasic or multiphasic scaffolds that aim to mimic the gradient hierarchy are widely used. Here, we find that two differently structured (topographically) three-dimensional scaffolds, namely, "dense" and "nanofibrous" surfaces, show differential stimulation in osteo- and chondro-responses of cells.

Trismus or lockjaw is the reduction in mouth opening. Radiotherapy-induced trismus occurs when the masticatory muscles are within range of radiation treating head and neck cancer, resulting in muscular fibrosis and trismus. We aim to assess the measurement properties of available validated patient-reported outcome measures relevant to radiotherapy-induced trismus in head and neck cancer patients.

Background: The outcomes of orthodontic treatment are frequently classified as aesthetic, functional, and psychosocial. However, there is limited research looking at outcomes of treatment in a qualitative manner from the patients' perspective. It is crucial to have a better understanding of these outcomes to allow management of expectations and enhance satisfaction with treatment.

Background And Objectives: Recent years have seen increased research investigating treatment outcomes from a patient perspective. However, parental perceptions are also important, as parents provide useful feedback. There is general acceptance that patients, and their parents, seek treatment for reasons including improvements in aesthetics, function, and quality of life.
