Br J Haematol

November 2024

Pathology (Hematopathology & Genomic Pathology), Medicine (Hematology/Oncology), The University of Chicago Medicine, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

To assess the relevance of co-occurring somatic mutations in TP53-mutated myeloid neoplasms with ≥10% blasts, we pooled 325 individuals from 10 centres. We focused on comparing three published somatic co-alteration signatures comprising (1) nine MDS-related genes ('ICC-MDSR'), (2) ICC-MDSR + additional secondary mutations-related genes ('Tazi signature') and (3) EPI6 (comprising six genes). Outcomes examined were 24-month overall survival (OS24) and front-line complete response (CR1).

Many patients are unable to identify members of their hospital care team and experience confusion regarding some medical terminology used during hospitalization, including descriptions of the structure of their inpatient care team. This cross-sectional study sought to (1) examine inpatients' understanding of the role of a hospitalist and (2) assess inpatients' familiarity with other medical terminology commonly used in the hospital. We surveyed 172 patients admitted to the hospital medicine service at two academic medical centers.

Peptain-1 blocks ischemia/reperfusion-induced retinal capillary degeneration in mice.

Front Cell Neurosci

August 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, UCHealth-Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Centre, School of Medicine, University of Colorado, Aurora, CO, United States.

Introduction: Neurovascular degeneration results in vascular dysfunction, leakage, ischemia, and structural changes that can lead to significant visual impairment. We previously showed the protective effects of peptain-1, a 20 amino acid peptide derived from the αB-crystallin core domain, on retinal ganglion cells in two animal models of glaucoma. Here, we evaluated the ability of peptain-1 to block apoptosis of human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs) and retinal capillary degeneration in mice subjected to retinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections and are frequently caused by Gram-negative organisms. The rise of resistant isolates has prompted evaluation of alternative therapies, including amoxicillin-clavulanate which has potent activity against Ambler class A enzymes. This study sought to evaluate clinical outcomes of patients with ceftriaxone non-susceptible UTIs receiving amoxicillin-clavulanate or standard of care (SOC).

Physical Violence and Aggression in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

J Acad Consult Liaison Psychiatry

August 2024

Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, TX; Department of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX.

Background: Physical violence and aggression (PVA), defined as behaviors with the potential to cause bodily injury, are unfortunate risks in the management of all-cause neurodegenerative dementias. While dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) may not be evident for many years after clinical onset, neuropsychiatric disturbances occur at all stages of the disease. At issue is whether PVA in PD is associated with clinical factors that can be targets for prevention and management in the absence of a prevailing dementia syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are used to control seizures and epilepsy, often requiring precise dosing due to narrow therapeutic windows and potential toxicity if levels are too low or high.
  • Pentobarbital is highlighted as a powerful anti-seizure medication that can also aid in head injury treatment, emphasizing the need for careful therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM).
  • A new LC-MS/MS method has been developed to effectively measure serum concentrations of six common AEDs and pentobarbital, ensuring accurate quantitation while minimizing variability and cross reactivity.

J Patient Exp

September 2023

Department of Biostatistics and Informatics, Colorado School of Public Health, University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO, USA.

Person-centered narrative interventions offer potential solutions to facilitate a connection between the person receiving care and the person delivering the care, to improve quality of care, and positively impact a patient's biopsychosocial well-being. This single-arm feasibility study investigates patient-reported outcomes and barriers/facilitators to the implementation of an all-virtually delivered person-centered narrative intervention into the person's electronic health record. Overall, electronic data collection for the patient-reported outcomes was feasible.
