Rationale And Objectives: To assess the efficacy and safety of percutaneous stenting for the palliative treatment of malignant superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS).
Methods And Materials: Literature review of retrospective studies was performed regarding direct procedural complications (fatal and non-fatal), clinical effectiveness, and patency rates (primary and secondary) of percutaneous transluminal stenting for the palliative treatment of malignant SVCS. Pooled rates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for fatal complications, non-fatal complications, clinical effectiveness, primary patency, and secondary patency.

Objective: To assess the safety and efficacy of a novel Wnt pathway modulator, lorecivivint (SM04690), for treating pain and inhibiting structural progression in moderately to severely symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods: Subjects in this 52-week, phase IIa, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging trial received a single 2-ml intraarticular injection of lorecivivint (dose of 0.03 mg, 0.

Objective: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the fourth most widely sold drugs in the United States. Mounting evidence suggests PPIs may not be as safe as originally thought. We hypothesize that increased awareness of PPI side effects and patient education may influence patient interest in PPI use and compliance.

The respiratory system is continuously exposed to variety of biological and chemical irritants that contain reactive oxygen species, and these are well known to cause oxidative stress responses in lung epithelial cells. There is a clinical need to identify biomarkers of oxidative stress which could potentially support early indicators of disease and health management. To identify volatile biomarkers of oxidative stress, we analyzed the headspace above human bronchial epithelial cell cultures (HBE1) before and after hydrogen peroxide (HO) and cigarette smoke extract (CSE) exposure.

The human respiratory tract releases volatile metabolites into exhaled breath that can be utilized for noninvasive health diagnostics. To understand the origin of this metabolic process, our group has previously analyzed the headspace above human epithelial cell cultures using solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). In the present work, we improve our model by employing sorbent-covered magnetic stir bars for headspace sorptive extraction (HSSE).

Purpose: We report outcome of linear accelerator (Linac)-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for trigeminal neuralgia (TGN) utilizing rigid head frame (RF) and facemask (FM) immobilization.Method: From November 2008 to October 2012, 48 patients with idiopathic TGN underwent primary SRS by a dedicated Linac. RF immobilization was utilized for 34 patients, and frameless image-guided radiosurgery (IGRS) with FM immobilization was performed in 14 patients.

Context: The allocation of scarce health care resources requires a knowledge of disease costs. Whereas many studies of a variety of diseases are available, few focus on job-related injuries and illnesses. This article provides estimates of the national costs of occupational injury and illness among civilians in the United States for 2007.

Objectives: To evaluate the success of a continent catheterizable stoma in females with cervical spinal cord injury which resulted in neurogenic bladder dysfunction, the management of which may require clean intermittent catheterization despite altered hand function.
Patients And Methods: Six female tetraplegic patients with a lesion at C7 or above (age range 12-22 years) had a continent catheterizable abdominal stoma formed as part of their bladder management. As an objective measure of effectiveness, the time to complete catheterization was assessed before and after surgery.
