Although the Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging global health burden, little is known about its interaction with the host cell. HEV genome encodes three proteins including the ORF2 capsid protein that is produced in different forms, the ORF2i protein which is the structural component of viral particles, and the ORF2g/c proteins which are massively secreted but are not associated with infectious material. We recently demonstrated that the endocytic recycling compartment (ERC) is hijacked by HEV to serve as a viral factory.

The 3CL protease (3CL, M) plays a key role in the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 and was validated as therapeutic target by the development and approval of specific antiviral drugs (nirmatrelvir, ensitrelvir), inhibitors of this protease. Moreover, its high conservation within the coronavirus family renders it an attractive therapeutic target for the development of anti-coronavirus compounds with broad spectrum activity to control COVID-19 and future coronavirus diseases. Here we report on the design, synthesis and structure-activity relationships of a new series of small covalent reversible inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 3CL.

Methods enabling the dechalcogenation of thiols or selenols have been investigated and developed for a long time in fields of research as diverse as the study of prebiotic chemistry, the engineering of fuel processing techniques, the study of biomolecule structures and function or the chemical synthesis of biomolecules. The dechalcogenation of thiol or selenol amino acids is nowadays a particularly flourishing area of research for being a pillar of modern chemical protein synthesis, when used in combination with thiol or selenol-based chemoselective peptide ligation chemistries. This review offers a comprehensive and scholarly overview of the field, emphasizing emerging trends and providing a detailed and critical mechanistic discussion of the dechalcogenation methods developed so far.

Despite the importance of species interactions in determining fitness, a quantitative synthesis of how they affect dispersal is lacking. We present a meta-analysis asking (i) whether the interaction experienced and/or perceived by a focal species (detrimental interaction with predators, competitors, parasites or beneficial interaction with resources, hosts, mutualists) affects its dispersal; and (ii) how the species' ecological and biological background affects the direction and strength of this interaction-dependent dispersal.

Antibiotic-resistant Enterobacterales pose a major threat to healthcare systems worldwide, necessitating the development of novel strategies to fight such hard-to-kill bacteria. One potential approach is to develop molecules that force bacteria to hyper-activate prodrug antibiotics, thus rendering them more effective. French Guiana, located in the Guiana Shield, is a natural reservoir for many zoonotic pathogens that are of considerable medical or veterinary importance. Until now, there has been limited data available on the description of parasites circulating in this area, especially on protozoan belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa; conversely, the neighbouring countries describe a high parasitic prevalence in animals and humans. Epidemiological surveillance is necessary, as new potentially virulent strains may emerge from these forest ecosystems, such as Amazonian toxoplasmosis.
