The adherent-invasive (AIEC) pathotype has been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases in general and in Crohn's disease (CD) in particular. Severe granulomatosis in productive layer chickens due to strain 13/16632 infection occurred in 2013 and 2017 on farms situated in a wetland area in the Netherlands. We hypothesized that wetland birds could be the source of the infection. Therefore, a prevalence study on trichomonads was performed by analysing cloaca swabs of 526 birds belonging to 13 species of wetland birds.

Schistosomiasis is a major neglected parasitic disease that affects more than 265 million people worldwide and for which the control strategy consists of mass treatment with the only available drug, praziquantel. Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools to prevent infectious diseases. To ensure that the best possible antigenic components are chosen to stimulate a cognitive immune response, boosting antigen presentation using adjuvants is common practice. Nanodiamond-based adjuvants are proposed here as a rapid and versatile platform for antigen conjugation, utilizing peptides common to different pathogenic strains and making this strategy a good candidate for a "ready-to-use" vaccine.

Antibiotic resistance is a global challenge for tuberculosis control, and accelerating its diagnosis is critical for therapy decisions and controlling transmission. Genotype-based molecular diagnostics now play an increasing role in accelerating the detection of such antibiotic resistance, but their accuracy depends on the instructed detection of genetic variations. Genetic mobile elements such as IS are established sources of genetic variation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but their implication in clinical antibiotic resistance has thus far been unclear.

Rare actinomycetes are likely treasure troves for bioactive natural products, and it is therefore important that we enrich our understanding of biosynthetic potential of these relatively understudied bacteria. Dactylosporangium are a genus of such rare Actinobacteria that are known to produce a number of important antibacterial compounds, but for which there are still no fully assembled reference genomes, and where the extent of encoded biosynthetic capacity is not defined. Dactylosporangium vinaceum (NRRL B-16297) is known to readily produce a deep wine red-coloured diffusible pigment of unknown origin, and it was decided to define the chemical identity of this natural product pigment, and in parallel use whole genome sequencing and transcriptional analysis to lay a foundation for understanding the biosynthetic capacity of these bacteria.

Pneumocystis fungi are opportunistic parasites of mammalian lungs whose evolution, ecology and host specificity in natural host populations remain poorly understood and controversial. Using an extensive collection of 731 lung samples from 27 rodent species sampled in five Southeast Asian countries, and nested PCR amplification of mitochondrial and nuclear genes, we investigated the host specificity and genetic structure of Pneumocystis lineages infecting wild rodents. We also identified the rodent species playing a central role in the transmission of these parasites using network analysis and centrality measurement and we characterized the environmental conditions allowing Pneumocystis infection in Southeast Asia using generalized linear mixed models.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the main metabolites produced by the gut microbiota via the fermentation of complex carbohydrates and fibers. Evidence suggests that SCFAs play a role in the control of infections through direct action both on microorganisms and on host signaling. This review summarizes the main microbicidal effects of SCFAs and discusses studies highlighting the effect of SCFAs in the virulence and viability of microorganisms.

Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a leading cause of liver-related pathologies and a global health problem, currently affecting more than 71 million people worldwide. The development of a prophylactic vaccine is much needed to complement the effective antiviral treatment available and achieve HCV eradication.
