Predictive models for the thermal, chemical, and mechanical response of high explosives at extreme conditions are important for investigating their performance and safety. We introduce a particle-based, reactive model of 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) with molecular resolution utilizing generalized energy-conserving dissipative particle dynamics with reactions. The model is parameterized with respect to the data from atomistic molecular dynamics simulations as well as from quantum mechanical calculations, thus bridging atomic processes to the mesoscales, including microstructures and defects.

Mass spectrometry based 'omics pairs well with organ-on-a-chip-based investigations, which often have limited cellular material for sampling. However, a common issue with these chip-based platforms is well-to-well or chip-to-chip variability in the proteome and metabolome due to factors such as plate edge effects, cellular asynchronization, effluent flow, and limited cell count. This causes high variability in the quantitative multi-omics analysis of samples, potentially masking true biological changes within the system.

We have prepared a series of complexes of the type [Ir(ppy)(L] complexes (), where ppy is a substituted 2-phenylpyridine and L is a chelating phosphine thioether ligand. The parent complex () comprises an unsubstituted phenylpyridine ligand, whereas complex contains a nitro substituent on the pyridine ring, complex features a diphenylamine group on the phenyl ring, and has both nitro and diphenylamine groups. Crystallographic, H NMR, and elemental analysis data are consistent with each of the chemical formulae.

A new human coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China that caused a range of disease severities; including fever, shortness of breath, and coughing. This disease, now known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), quickly spread throughout the world, and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March of 2020. As the disease continues to spread, providing rapid characterization has proven crucial to better inform the design and execution of control measures, such as decontamination methods, diagnostic tests, antiviral drugs, and prophylactic vaccines for long-term control.

A portable seawater desalination system would be highly desirable to solve water challenges in rural areas and disaster situations. While many reverse osmosis-based portable desalination systems are already available commercially, they are not adequate for providing reliable drinking water in remote locations due to the requirement of high-pressure pumping and repeated maintenance. We demonstrate a field-deployable desalination system with multistage electromembrane processes, composed of two-stage ion concentration polarization and one-stage electrodialysis, to convert brackish water and seawater to drinkable water.

Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation modality that can treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or help smoking cessation. Research suggests that timing the delivery of TMS relative to an endogenous brain state may affect efficacy and short-term brain dynamics.
Objective: To investigate whether, for a multi-week daily treatment of repetitive TMS (rTMS), there is an effect on brain dynamics that depends on the timing of the TMS relative to individuals' prefrontal EEG quasi-alpha rhythm (between 6 and 13 Hz).

Current methods to characterize microbial communities generally employ sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene (<500 bp) with high accuracy (∼99%) but limited phylogenetic resolution. However, long-read sequencing now allows for the profiling of near-full-length ribosomal operons (16S-ITS-23S rRNA genes) on platforms such as the Oxford Nanopore MinION. Here, we describe an rRNA operon database with >300 ,000 entries, representing >10 ,000 prokaryotic species and ∼ 150, 000 strains.

Cellular lysates capable of transcription and translation have become valuable tools for prototyping genetic circuits, screening engineered functional parts, and producing biological components. Here we report that lysates derived from CO92 are functional and can utilize both the σ70 and the bacteriophage T7 promoter systems to produce green fluorescent protein (GFP). Because of the natural lifestyle of , lysates were produced from cultures grown at 21 °C, 26 °C, and 37 °C to mimic the infection cycle.

For the current study, an existing theater injury data set was compared to component and whole body experiments meant to replicate the theater high rate vertical loading environment. The theater injury data set was derived from real world events that were within the design range of the Warrior Injury Assessment Manikin. A qualitative and quantitative assessment of the whole body fracture patterns was developed to determine whether the laboratory loading was correctly representing the resulting injuries seen in theater Underbody Blast (UBB) events.

The last two decades have produced unprecedented successes in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML), due almost entirely to advances in deep neural networks (DNNs). Deep hierarchical memory networks are not a novel concept in cognitive science and can be traced back more than a half century to Simon's early work on discrimination nets for simulating human expertise. The major difference between DNNs and the deep memory nets meant for explaining human cognition is that the latter are symbolic networks meant to model the dynamics of human memory and learning.

The ARL Spectral Fitting application provides a free, publicly accessible, and fully transparent method for performing Franck-Condon Lineshape Analysis (FCLSA) on spectral data, in addition to CIE color coordinate determination and basic spectral processing. While some of the features may be found in commercial software or in programs made by academic research groups, we believe that ARL Spectral Fitting is the only application that possesses all three of the aforementioned attributes. Cascading high-amplitude bursts in neural activity, termed avalanches, are thought to provide insight into the complex spatially distributed interactions in neural systems. In human neuroimaging, for example, avalanches occurring during resting-state show scale-invariant dynamics, supporting the hypothesis that the brain operates near a critical point that enables long range spatial communication. In fact, it has been suggested that such scale-invariant dynamics, characterized by a power-law distribution in these avalanches, are universal in neural systems and emerge through a common mechanism.
