Background: This study aimed to describe and compare therapeutic approaches for horses with acute diarrhea in different geographic regions worldwide.

Methods: Clinical information was retrospectively collected from diarrheic horses presented to participating institutions between 2016 and 2020, including fluid therapy on admission, antimicrobial drugs, probiotics, anti-endotoxic medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, gastroprotectants, digital cryotherapy, and toxin-binding agents. Seasonal and geographic differences were investigated.

Analytical errors in nucleated red blood cell enumeration.

Vet Clin Pathol

December 2023

U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital and Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Science, University of Melbourne, Werribee, Victoria, Australia.

Background: Enumeration of nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) in peripheral blood of dogs and cats is performed by manual counting during blood film evaluation. Automated methods have increased precision and accuracy; however, most analyzers cannot distinguish leukocytes and NRBCs. The Sysmex XN-V Series may distinguish NRBCs and leukocytes; however, analytical errors occur.

Biomechanical Comparison of a 3-Loop Pulley and a 4-Loop Pulley Suture for Tenorrhaphy in the Canine Gastrocnemius Tendon.

Vet Comp Orthop Traumatol

September 2022

Melbourne Veterinary School, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital, Parkville, Victoria, Australia.

Objective:  The aim of this study was to compare a 3-loop pulley (3LP) suture pattern with a 4-loop pulley (4LP) suture pattern for the tenorrhaphy of the canine gastrocnemius tendon STUDY DESIGN:  Randomized, cadaveric, biomechanical study of 30 canine gastrocnemius tendons. Tendons were transected and repaired with either 3LP or 4LP suture pattern with 2-0 polypropylene. A tensile load was applied at 25 mm/min until construct failure.

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is increasingly used to screen for abdominal pathology in dogs, and the contrast dose used is commonly calculated as a linear function of total body weight (TBW). Body fat is not metabolically active and contributes little to dispersing or diluting contrast medium (CM) in the blood. This prospective, analytic, cross-section design pilot study aimed to establish the feasibility of intravenous CM dosed according to lean body weight (LBW) for abdominal CECT in dogs compared to TBW.

Translational Research and Clinical Trial Study Group, U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital, Werribee, Victoria, Australia.

Traditionally, urinary tract infections (UTIs) have been categorised as either uncomplicated or complicated in veterinary medicine, with treatment differing for the two categories. In human medicine, there is an additional category: Asymptomatic bacteriuria, which is the presence of bacteriuria without symptoms of infection. Escherichia coli (E.

This is the first reported case of hypoglobulinemia in a dog with disseminated plasma cell neoplasia. A 6-year-old male intact Rottweiler was referred to the U-Vet Animal Hospital (Werribee, Vic, Australia) for weight loss, hyporexia, lethargy, vomiting, and soft stools. Examination of a buffy coat preparation and splenic and liver aspirates revealed a monomorphic population of plasmacytoid cells, and the same cells comprised approximately 90% of bone marrow samples submitted for cytologic and histologic evaluation.

J Vet Intern Med

March 2021

U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital and Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, The University of Melbourne, Werribee, Victoria, Australia.

Background: Fibrinogen heterogeneity has been observed in humans and can influence fibrinogen measurements when using the modified Clauss assay. We hypothesized that fibrinogen heterogeneity also exists in horses.

Objectives: To determine whether fibrinogen heterogeneity exists in horses.

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) is increasingly being used as a standard diagnostic test for dogs with suspected abdominal pathology. The iodinated contrast dose is commonly calculated based on linear increases in total body weight. However, body fat is not metabolically active and contributes little to dispersing or diluting the contrast medium in the blood.

Unique cytologic and histologic features of a suspected cutaneous xanthoma in a dog.

Vet Clin Pathol

December 2019

U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital and Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, The University of Melbourne, Werribee, Vic., Australia.

A 4-year-old spayed female American Staffordshire Terrier presented to the U-Vet Animal Hospital, Werribee, Australia, with a cutaneous mass that had been slowly growing over 12 months. Cytologic evaluation showed cohesive to individualized, vacuolated spindled cells often arranged in a perivascular pattern. The mass was completely excised, and the histopathologic examination demonstrated sheets of vacuolated spindled to round cells expanding the full thickness of the dermis.
