Rapidly self-crosslinking sodium alginate hydrogel for infected wounds.

J Biomater Sci Polym Ed

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Materials Science, National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, Nanjing Normal University (NNU), Nanjing, China.

The risks associated with wound infections are significant, making a snug-fitting hydrogel dressing an optimal choice for wound management. For it, we employed the self-cross-linking method of oxidized sodium alginate (SCSA), incorporating clarithromycin (Cla) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) to formulate a rapidly forming, bacteriostatic, and wound-healing hydrogel (SCSA@C/b). Bacteriostatic and cytocompatibility assays demonstrated that SCSA@C/b exhibits exceptional antibacterial activity alongside strong biocompatibility.

The okaramine family of compounds, a class of alkaloids with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity, has been discovered from species of and . These okaramines, characterized by their complex structures and diverse biological activities, have attracted widespread attention from biologists and chemists. To date, only a few okaramines have been synthesized, notably the highly active okaramines A and B, which feature a polycyclic skeleton, including an azocine ring and an unprecedented 2-dimethyl-3-methyl-azetidine ring.

Introduction: Macrophage-inducible C-type lectin (Mincle) has emerged as a potential contributor to neuropathic pain induction and neuroinflammatory responses within the spinal cord. Moreover, evidence suggests a close association between toll-like receptor (TLR) and Mincle expression in myeloid cells. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Mincle antibodies in neuropathic pain and identified the epitope of these antibodies.

Episodic memory is accounted for with two processes: "familiarity" when generally recognizing an item and "recollection" when retrieving the full contextual details bound with the item. We tested a combination of item recognition confidence and source memory, focusing upon three conditions: "item-only hits with source unknown" ('item familiarity'), "low-confidence hits with correct source memory" ('context familiarity'), and "high-confidence hits with correct source memory" ('recollection'). Behaviorally, context familiarity was slower than the others during item recognition, but faster during source memory.

. Validation of Guidance for Writing Higher-Order Multiple-Choice Questions in Medical Science Education.

Med Sci Educ

December 2024

Swansea University Medical School, Swansea University, Singleton Park Campus, Swansea, Wales, SA2 8PP UK.

Unlabelled: Problem-solving and higher-order learning are goals of higher education. It has been repeatedly suggested that multiple-choice questions (MCQs) can be used to test higher-order learning, although objective empirical evidence is lacking and MCQs are often criticised for assessing only lower-order, factual, or 'rote' learning. These challenges are compounded by a lack of agreement on what constitutes higher order learning: it is normally defined subjectively using heavily criticised frameworks such as such as Bloom's taxonomy.

Objective: Previous studies have provided inconclusive results on the association between depression and stroke risk, and the potential modifying effect of comorbid insomnia on this association remains unclear. Our study aimed to clarify the independent roles of depression and insomnia as risk factors for stroke and to investigate the possibility of an interaction effect between these two conditions on stroke incidence.

Methods: We used data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study.

A Slimming/Excavating Strategy for Enhanced Intratumoral Penetration of Acid-Disassemblable NO-Releasing Nanomedicines.

Adv Healthc Mater

January 2025

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Hydrogen Science & Center of Hydrogen Science, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Poor tumor penetration is the major predicament of nanomedicines that limits their anticancer efficacy. The dense extracellular matrix (ECM) in the tumor is one of the major barriers against the deep penetration of nanomedicines. In this work, a slimming/excavating strategy is proposed for enhanced intratumoral penetration based on an acid-disassemblable nanomicelles-assembled nanomedicine and the NO-mediated degradation of ECM.

Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction induces chondrocyte senescence, thereby precipitating articular cartilage (AC) degeneration in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Although the transfer of mitochondria from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to host cells and their potential protective role have been demonstrated, whether MSCs can alleviate chondrocyte mitochondrial dysfunction or reverse OA progression remains unclear.

Methods: A mitochondrial tracer was used to investigate the transfer of mitochondria-rich extracellular vesicles (MEV) derived from the culture supernatant of human synovial fluid-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hSF-MSCs).

Complex wound closure scenarios necessitate the development of advanced wound dressings that can effectively address the challenges of filling irregularly shaped wounds and managing fatigue failures encountered in daily patient activities. To tackle these issues, we develop a multifunctional hydrogel from natural polysaccharides and polypeptides with injectability and self-healing properties for promoting full-time and multipurpose wound healing. Synthesized through dynamic Schiff base linkages between oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), ε-polylysine (ε-PL), and quaternized chitosan (QCS), the OHA/ε-PL/QCS hydrogel can gel rapidly within 50 s.

Aneurysmal Coronary Artery Disease (ACAD) can occur as localized dilations of a segment of one or more coronary arteries or diffuse ectasia-type dilatations of one or more coronaries. Atherosclerosis remains the most common cause of these aneurysms, with Kawasaki Disease being implicated in the Asian population. We present a case of a 62-year-old Asian woman who dies suddenly with no prior symptoms.

January 2025

Division of Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, USA.

Genome-wide association studies have identified approximately 200 genetic risk loci for breast cancer, but the causal variants and target genes are mostly unknown. We sought to fine-map all known breast cancer risk loci using genome-wide association study data from 172,737 female breast cancer cases and 242,009 controls of African, Asian and European ancestry. We identified 332 independent association signals for breast cancer risk, including 131 signals not reported previously, and for 50 of them, we narrowed the credible causal variants down to a single variant.
