Background: It has been suggested that smokers have higher recanalization rate, lower risk of cerebral hemorrhage and better prognosis than non-smokers (smoking paradox) after reperfusion therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to assess the effects of smoking on recanalization, intracranial hemorrhage, and clinical outcomes in patients with acute IS following reperfusion therapy.

Methods: Patients were categorized into smokers and non-smokers, with data collected on types of reperfusion therapy, demographics, medication use, comorbidities, stroke etiology, mRS and NIHSS scores, TICI and ECASS classifications.

Sport-specific differences in ACL injury, treatment and return to sports: Basketball.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

January 2025

Division of Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal Diseases, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), Luxembourg, Luxembourg.

Basketball is an intense, fast-paced game that is physically, highly demanding. Certain aspects of the game, such as the quick pivoting and cutting movements, predispose the players to serious knee injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. While an ACL tear can be a devastating condition for players, multidisciplinary management of the injury can provide the players with a reasonable chance to return to play at the pre-injury level.

Thymoquinone (TQ) has shown antitumorigenic effects in breast cancer; however, its detailed impact on cell signaling mechanisms requires further investigation. This study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms behind TQ's antiproliferative effects in breast cancer by analyzing proteome-level changes. MCF-7 cells were treated with 15 µM TQ, the inhibitory concentration (IC50), for 48 h.

Bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) has garnered significant attention due to its critical roles in leukemia pathogenesis, cancer metastasis, and bone marrow failure. BMAT is a metabolically active, distinct tissue that differs from other fat depots. Marrow adipocytes, closely interacting with hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and osteoblasts, play a pivotal role in regulating their functions.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations like the common L858R and exon 19 deletions are well studied, but rarer mutations like exon 19 insertions have received less attention. This case report describes a patient with this uncommon EGFR exon 19 insertion mutation in metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. A 51-year-old male nonsmoker with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma and a rare EGFR exon 19 insertion mutation experienced disease progression on initial carboplatin-pemetrexed chemotherapy.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), such as pembrolizumab, have revolutionized cancer treatment by enhancing the immune system's response to malignancies. However, these therapies are associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including neuromuscular complications such as myasthenia gravis, myositis, and myocarditis. We describe two male patients, aged 67 and 68, with small cell and non-small cell lung cancers, who developed progressive neuromuscular symptoms, including ptosis, diplopia, and generalized weakness, after receiving pembrolizumab.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify serum surfactant protein D (SP-D) levels that can aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19, while also developing a new prognostic scale called the CHARISMA Score.
  • Researchers conducted assessments on 64 COVID-19 patients and 16 healthy individuals, comparing various subgroups based on factors such as PCR results and severity of illness, ultimately finding significant differences in serum SP-D levels.
  • Results indicated that higher SP-D levels and CHARISMA scores correlated with greater disease severity and mortality risk, establishing the potential of these measures for predicting patient outcomes in COVID-19 pneumonia.

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS), caused by a heterozygous gain of function variant of the NOTCH2 gene, is a rare skeletal dysplasia. Although the main presentation is acro-osteolysis, osteoporosis, and facial dysmorphism, having a wide range of clinical manifestations creates diagnostic difficulties. Here, a 15-year-old male patient with HCS who had no complaints until this age except for two short bone fractures and one vertebral collapse fracture due to a fall was reported.

Recent advances in next generation sequencing (NGS) have positioned whole exome sequencing (WES) as an efficient first-tier method in genetic diagnosis. However, despite the diagnostic yield of 35%-50% in intellectual disability (ID) many patients still remain undiagnosed due to inherent limitations and bioinformatic short-comings. In this study, we reanalyzed WES data from 159 Iranian families showing recessively inherited ID.
