Differences of microbial growth and biofilm formation among periprosthetic joint infection-causing species: an animal study.

Purpose: The most frequently used surgical procedures for periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR), as well as single- or two-stage revision arthroplasty. The choice of surgery is made depending on the full maturation of the biofilm layer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biofilm formation and microbial growth using common PJI-causing agents and compare its development on the implant surface.

Background: Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome (BOS), a fibrotic airway disease that may develop after lung transplantation, conventionally relies on pulmonary function tests (PFTs) for diagnosis due to limitations of CT imaging. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have not previously been used for BOS detection. This study aims to train a DNN to detect BOS in CT scans using an approach tailored for low-data scenarios.

Like other chemotherapeutic agents, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) targets cancerous cells, but it also causes many unwanted side effects on healthy tissues and cells. Based on the undesirable effects of 5-FU, the aim of this study was to determine how 5-FU affects lung tissue and whether nobiletin has any protective effect. The study consisted of negative control, Nobiletin, 5-FU and Nobiletin + 5-FU groups.

Enhancing energy autonomy of greenhouses with semi-transparent photovoltaic systems through a comparative study of battery storage systems.

Effective energy management is crucial in greenhouse farming to ensure efficient operations and optimal crop growth. This study investigates the energy autonomy-defined as the ratio of on-site energy generation to the total energy demand-of greenhouses equipped with semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) systems under two scenarios: with and without a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). STPV systems are beneficial because they generate energy while still allowing enough light to pass through for healthy plant development.

A Multicriteria Decision-Making Model for the Selection of Conventional/Hybrid Coagulants in Water Treatment.

Coagulation process is a well-known process that has been used in water treatment for many years. Coagulation process shows the treatment efficiency in terms of turbidity and suspended solids removal. However, despite all these good results, coagulant selection is not an easy task because a coagulant can effectively remove suspended solids but at the same time increase conductivity or coagulants can significantly increase chemical sludge production.

Determination of the Surgical Landmarks for the Anterior and Middle Cranial Fossa in Dry Skulls With the Photography System, Cadavers and 3-Dimensional Computed Tomography.

The present paper was designed to analyze the dimensions of such important bony structures and surgical landmarks, which are used by many clinicians in many surgical interventions, in dry skull, cadaver, and healthy subjects on computed tomography (CT) images, and to determine whether there is a significant difference between these methods, and to obtain reference values from 3 different methods. Eight cadavers and 16 dry skulls and 100 three-dimensional (3D) CT images were studied. Necessary permissions for the study were obtained from Ethics Comittee.

Investigating Sequence Variations in and Genes in Language Disorders.

Objective: Language disorder, a prevalent developmental disorder, impedes children's communication skills, with genetic and environmental factors playing pivotal roles in its pathomechanism. This study aims to investigate the involvement of sequence variations in and genes, along with environmental variables, in language disorder's etiology.

Methods: Between September 2022 and March 2023, thirty children aged 2-7 diagnosed with language disorders according to DSM-5 criteria, and evaluated using the Ankara Developmental Screening Inventory, were studied to identify genetic and environmental factors contributing to etiology.

Can 3 Stages Forehead Flap Provide Longer Flap Length?

This article discusses the use of the forehead flap technique in nasal reconstruction, specifically examining the effect of the 3-stage forehead flap procedure in providing longer flap length. Traditionally performed in 2 stages, the forehead flap technique often requires additional operations due to the thickness of the forehead skin. The 3-stage procedure, however, allows for better control of the flap thickness and improved reconstruction of nasal subunits.

The Prevalence, Serogroup Distribution and Risk Factors of Meningococcal Carriage in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults in Turkey Meningo-Carr-TR Study PART 3: COVID-19 Pandemic Situation.

Background: The prevalence of meningococcal carriage and serogroup distribution is crucial for assessing the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease, forecasting outbreaks and formulating potential immunization strategies. Following the meningococcal carriage studies conducted in Turkey in 2016 and 2018, we planned to re-evaluate meningococcal carriage in children, adolescents and young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

Methods: In the MENINGO-CARR-3 study, we collected nasopharyngeal samples from 1585 participants 0-24 years of age, across 9 different centers in Turkey.

Management of Temporoparietal Flap on Difficult Facial Deformities With Minimal Donor Site Morbidity.

The aim of this study is to investigate the use of the temporoparietal fascial flap (TPFF) in the repair of tissue defects in the head and neck region. TPFF is a preferred method among surgeons due to its thin and flexible structure and its strong vascular structure supplied by the superficial temporal artery. In the study, the operations performed on a total of 21 patients and the results of these operations were analyzed.

Anthropometric Study of Auricular Development in Human Fetal Cadavers.

The aim of the study is to comprehensively examine the composition and localization of the auricle in formalin-fixed human fetuses during the second and third trimesters of the antenatal period. Ninety-seven auricles were evaluated (33 females and 31 males in the second, and 22 females and 11 males in the third trimester). Nine morphometric dimensions were directly measured from auricles.

Inadequate awareness and attention to non-HDL cholesterol: undertreatment of high-risk patients in cardiology practice in Turkey.

Background: The relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is well-established. Recently, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) has been validated as a superior predictor of ASCVD, especially in individuals with mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia. This study further investigated the mechanisms of T. versicolor-ePSP on regulating glucose metabolism, including insulin signaling molecules and glucose metabolism-associated enzymes, in the liver of rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Evaluation of ACE I/D and ATIR A1166C variants in patients with diabetes mellitus with and without peripheral neuropathy in Turkish patients.

Background: Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to make correct inferences from one's own or another person's mental states, such as thoughts, beliefs, desires, and intentions. Although there are a limited number of studies in the literature examining the social cognitive functions of patients with trichotillomania (TTM), no studies have evaluated ToM.
