Background: Current guidelines for screening glucose dysregulation (GD) in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) recommend an annual 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) starting at the age of 10 years.

Objective: Assessment of adherence to OGTT screening in patients with TDT.

Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 18 Thalassemia Centers in 10 different countries, targeting factors influencing adherence to annual OGTT screening in specialized multidisciplinary pediatric and adult TDT units and identifying strategies to improve adherence to OGTT in TDT patients.

Currently, available therapies for diabetes cannot achieve normal sugar values in a high percentage of treated patients. This work synthesized a series of carbazole-triazole-thione derivatives, and their potential antidiabetic activity was investigated against the key diabetic enzymes α-amylase and glycosidase. Normal human hepatic stellate cells (LX-2) were employed to assess their cytotoxicity and safety, followed by in vivo testing to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of the most promising agent.

The montmorillonite@iron oxide@silver (MMT@FeO@Ag) nanocomposite, which is recyclable and exhibits high catalytic activity, was evaluated for the degradation of methyl yellow (MY), a carcinogenic azo dye. For this purpose, MMT@FeO was first synthesized via the coprecipitation method and then Ag was doped to MMT@FeO via the chemical reduction method. MMT, MMT@FeO, and MMT@FeO@Ag were characterized by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, and thermal gravimetric analysis.

Shape Memory PLA/TPU Blend Using High-Speed Thermo-Kinetic Mixing.

ACS Omega

January 2025

Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Center, Sabanci University, Tuzla, Istanbul 34956, Turkey.

In this study, a thorough examination of the chemical, thermal, and mechanical characteristics, as well as shape memory behavior at low temperatures, of blends consisting of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyurethane (TPU) is conducted. The research involves the preparation of PLA/TPU mixtures with varying concentrations of TPU using a high-speed thermo-kinetic mixing approach. Chemical, morphological, and thermal analyses were conducted on pure PLA, TPU, and PLA/TPU mixtures by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction pattern spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Here, BODIPY derivatives were functionalized with barbituric acid, which has multiple hydrogen bonding abilities that are directional, to have highly ordered hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembled structures to tune BODIPY's photophysical properties. The synthesis of barbituric acid-functionalized BODIPY derivatives via Vilsmeier and Knoevenagel reactions was achieved, and the resulting compounds were characterized with FT-IR, H NMR, C NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Hydrogen bond-mediated self-assembled structures were investigated through UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometry, H NMR spectroscopy, and a dynamic light scattering method in solution.

Cysteine derivatives having disulfide bonds in their side chains can be used as redox-responsive organogelators. The disulfide bond can be cleaved in the presence of certain reducing agents like thiol derivatives such as glutathione (GSH), which is a tripeptide that consists of cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Studies show that cells of certain cancers have higher levels of glutathione due to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The sensitive Bisphenol A (BPA) detection by an electrochemical sensor based on gold nanoparticle-doped molecularly imprinted polymer was successfully improved. This study describes the development of a method for BPA detection in both aqueous solution and real water samples using N-methacroyl-(L)-cysteine methyl ester and N-methacryloyl-(L)-phenylalanine methyl ester coated pencil graphite electrodes modified with AuNPs by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Importantly, AuNPs, which increase the electroactivity, were used to increase the surface area of a BPA-imprinted pencil graphite electrode (MIP PGE) sensor.

Silk fibroin (SF), a natural polymer with very desirable physicochemical and biological properties, is an ideal material for crafting biocompatible scaffolds in tissue engineering. However, conventional methods for removing the sericin layer and dissolving SF often involve environmentally harmful reagents and processes, requiring extensive dialysis procedures to purify the fibers produced. Such processes may also damage the surface and bulk properties of the SF produced.

In this study, four novels 2,5,6-trisubstituted imidazothiadiazole derivative ligands and their Ag(I) complexes were synthesized and characterized using various spectroscopic analysis techniques. First, imidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole derivative (3) was obtained from the reaction of 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol with benzyl bromide in the presence of KOH in an ethanolic medium. In the next step, the resultant compound reacted sequentially with four substituted phenacyl bromide derivatives (4a-4d) under refluxed ethanol for 24 h to obtain substituted 2-(benzylthio)-6-phenylimidazo[2,1-b][1,3,4]thiadiazole derivatives (5-8).
