Performance Improvement with Reduced Number of Channels in Motor Imagery BCI System.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, 34467 Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey.

Classifying Motor Imaging (MI) Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is of vital importance for Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems, but challenges remain. A key challenge is to reduce the number of channels to improve flexibility, portability, and computational efficiency, especially in multi-class scenarios where more channels are needed for accurate classification. This study demonstrates that combining Electrooculogram (EOG) channels with a reduced set of EEG channels is more effective than relying on a large number of EEG channels alone.

Prognostic Value of Blood-Based Inflammatory Markers in Cancer Patients Receiving Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2024

Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Faculty, Ege University, 35100 Izmir, Turkey.

Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly improved cancer treatment, a substantial proportion of patients do not benefit from these therapies, revealing the crucial need to identify reliable biomarkers. Inflammatory markers, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), pan-immune inflammation value (PIV), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and C-reactive protein (CRP), may provide insights into treatment outcomes. : This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of multiple inflammatory markers in patients with cancer receiving ICI-based therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the influence of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KABs) on salt consumption in Turkey, emphasizing the need for KAB assessment to tackle public health concerns related to high salt intake.
  • The research involved 415 adults and found that while many recognized the health risks of high salt intake, their behaviors did not consistently match their attitudes, particularly regarding label-checking and using low-sodium products.
  • The findings suggest a need for improved education about salt's health effects and dietary sources, as well as the implementation of regulations to promote healthier food choices and reduce salt levels in the food industry.

The timely detection of AAB, thought essential for their control, is however challenging due to the difficulties of their isolation. Thus, it would be advantageous to detect them using molecular methods at all stages of winemaking and storage.

Patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (ADMCI) typically show abnormally high delta (<4 Hz) and low alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms measured from resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that the abnormalities in rsEEG activity may be greater in ADMCI patients than in those with MCI not due to AD (noADMCI). Furthermore, they may be associated with the diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) amyloid-tau biomarkers in ADMCI patients.

Fucosidosis: A Review of a Rare Disease.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Çanakkale 17100, Turkey.

Fucosidosis is a rare lysosomal storage disease caused by α-L-fucosidase deficiency following a mutation in the gene. This enzyme is responsible for breaking down fucose-containing glycoproteins, glycolipids, and oligosaccharides within the lysosome. Mutations in result in either reduced enzyme activity or complete loss of function, leading to the accumulation of fucose-rich substrates in lysosomes.

Hematoxylin (HT) is a natural staining dye used in histopathology, often combined with Eosin for H&E staining. A poly(hematoxylin-co-l-lysine) (p(HT-co-l)) nanonetwork was synthesized through a one-step Mannich condensation reaction using formaldehyde as a linking agent. The resulting p(HT-co-l) nanogels had an average size of about 200 nm and exhibited a smooth surface and desirable functional groups such as -OH, -NH, and -COOH, as recognized by FT-IR analysis.
