Background: Liver retraction management in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is challenging for surgeons, especially in patients with enlarged livers. Traditional methods, such as the Nathanson retractor (NR), often necessitate additional incisions, potentially increasing liver enzymes and increasing the risk of complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the use of a Veress needle (VN), an alternative liver retraction technique, in LSG surgery compared with NR.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the use of diffusion-weighted MRI to evaluate prostate cancer patients with Gleason score 7 tumors before radiotherapy, focusing on the correlation between MRI results, cancer characteristics, and treatment outcomes.
  • It was found that tumors classified as GS 3+4 had higher ADC values compared to GS 4+3 tumors, indicating a difference in disease aggression, with lower ADC values linked to poorer survival rates.
  • The research concluded that ADC values could serve as an effective biomarker to distinguish between different types of GS 7 tumors, with lower values correlating with a higher risk of disease progression and worse long-term outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to explore reasons for same-day surgery cancellations and assess unexpected events affecting these surgeries, with a focus on identifying preventable versus nonpreventable factors.
  • - Conducted at a single hospital, the research included data from 4,287 patients, revealing a 5.8% unexpected event rate and a 2.16% cancellation rate, primarily due to medical issues, particularly undiagnosed hypertension.
  • - The results indicated that the majority of cancellations were preventable, emphasizing the importance of preoperative assessments and the need for better patient awareness about their health conditions, which could lead to timely referrals for follow-up care.

Evaluating the reproducibility of a deep learning algorithm for the prediction of retinal age.

Geroscience

November 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Stadtspital Triemli: Stadtspital Zurich Triemli, Birmensdorferstrasse 497, CH-8063, Zurich, Switzerland.

Recently, a deep learning algorithm (DLA) has been developed to predict the chronological age from retinal images. The Retinal Age Gap (RAG), a deviation between predicted age from retinal images (Retinal Age, RA) and chronological age, correlates with mortality and age-related diseases. This study evaluated the reliability and accuracy of RA predictions and analyzed various factors that may influence them.

  • * PTWA was tested as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement in concrete by varying its ratio while keeping ground blast furnace slag constant, and a series of experiments analyzed both mineralogical properties and mechanical performance over time.
  • * Results showed that while using PTWA reduced setting times of the concrete mixtures, it also led to decreased overall performance compared to standard mixes, suggesting a complicated relationship that could potentially benefit the environment when combined with other materials like GBFS.

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease whose mechanisms are being studied to improve prognosis and treatment options, focusing on Interleukin 34 (IL-34) for its potential role in MS activity.
  • A study with 52 MS patients assessed CSF IL-34 levels over a year, comparing those with clinical/radiological activity to those without, and to a control group.
  • Findings showed higher IL-34 levels in MS patients than controls, but no significant correlation with disease activity, suggesting IL-34 may be an important biomarker for MS pathogenesis despite not being linked to clinical symptoms.

Oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction in cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Division of Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolism, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, Istanbul, Türkiye, Turkey.

Cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency (CBSD) is the most prevalent inherited disorder of homocysteine metabolism in the transsulphuration pathway. Research have suggested oxidative stress and inflammation as candidate pathogenic mechanisms in CBSD. This study aims to evaluate mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress biomarkers in cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency (CBSD) patients, which may aid in understanding the pathogenesis of CBSD and improving treatment.

  • The study aimed to assess diaphragm muscle mass, strength, and quality in pediatric patients with primary malnutrition using conventional ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE).
  • Researchers compared diaphragm thickness and stiffness between 62 malnourished children and 53 healthy controls, finding significant reductions in the malnourished group.
  • The results suggest that US and SWE may be useful tools for diagnosing and monitoring sarcopenia, but further studies are needed to validate these findings.
