Development of severe hyponatremia due to cerebrospinal fluid leakage following meningomyelocele surgery in a newborn.

Cerebrospinal fluid leakage following meningomyelocele surgery is a frequent complication in the wound-healing period and is associated with wound dehiscence. CSF loss can cause severe hyponatremia, especially in the newborn and early infancy periods when dietary sodium content is relatively low. Hyponatremia in the newborn period can result in adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Background: We aimed to investigate the risk factors of post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) atrial fibrillation (AF) in male and female patients without any history of AF, to identify the sex-specific risk factors, and to examine the effect of sex-specific risk factors on the overall population.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted using the hospital database with 4,758 patients who underwent CABG surgery. Among them, 2,836 patients with complete data participated in this study.

Background: The combination of bortezomib, melphalan, and prednisone is a standard treatment for patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma who are ineligible for autologous stem-cell transplantation. Daratumumab has shown efficacy in combination with standard-of-care regimens in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma.

Methods: In this phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned 706 patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma who were ineligible for stem-cell transplantation to receive nine cycles of bortezomib, melphalan, and prednisone either alone (control group) or with daratumumab (daratumumab group) until disease progression.

Methods: We conducted an open-label, multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial involving patients with previously untreated stage III or IV classic Hodgkin's lymphoma, in which 664 were assigned to receive brentuximab vedotin, doxorubicin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (A+AVD) and 670 were assigned to receive doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD). The primary end point was modified progression-free survival (the time to progression, death, or noncomplete response and use of subsequent anticancer therapy) as adjudicated by an independent review committee.

Wrapping degloved fingers with a distal-based radial forearm perforator flap: A repair method for multiple digital degloving injury.

Degloving hand injuries present challenging situations to hand surgeons as they present with difficulties in reconstructive microsurgery, particularly in multiple digital injuries. Time is a limiting factor when multiple degloving finger amputations are present. Thus, we proposed a repair method for multiple degloving finger injuries that involves coverage with a distal-based reverse forearm flap of all injured fingers in a two-stage procedure.

Objective: Trichomoniasis is a parasitic infection that occurs with the settlement of Trichomonas vaginalis in female and male urinary and reproductive tracts. In this study, our aim was to detect trichomoniasis using nested polymerase chain reaction among males who were referred to a hospital with suspected urinary tract infection.

BK virus-induced acute motor-axonal polyneuropathy in a renal transplant patient.

Neurological complications are not uncommon in patients with renal transplantation, mostly affecting the central nervous system, and less frequently the peripheral nerves. BK virus infection is relatively common in transplant recipients and in some cases may lead to neurological complications. In this report, we present an interesting case of a patient who developed acute axonal motor polyneuropathy in the course of BK virus infection 3 months after kidney transplantation.

Outcomes of Kidney Transplantations From the Same Deceased Donor to Two Different Recipients: A Single-Center Experience.

Background: Kidney transplantation is the best treatment method for end-stage renal disease. Technically, left kidney transplantation is easier than right kidney, and the complication rates in the right are higher than the left kidney. We performed 28 kidney transplantations from 14 deceased donors between November 2010 and May 2016.

Choroidal neovascularization secondary to ocular penetration during retrobulbar anesthesia and its treatment.

Retrobulbar anesthesia is still used before ocular surgery; however, it has various complications including ocular penetration. The penetration/perforation of the globe can cause complications such as endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, and scotoma. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is rarely seen, following choroidal rupture in penetrating eye injuries.

[Gluteal compartment syndrome developing after nephrectomy and incisional hernia surgery].

Gluteal compartment syndrome is a rather rare syndrome often leading to severe sequelae, sepsis, renal failure, and even death due to delayed diagnosis. Establishing early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications associated with ischemia. In this article, we report a 56-year-old male patient who developed gluteal compartment syndrome after incisional hernia and nephrectomy surgery in lateral decubitus position.

Conventional and ZOOMit DWI for Evaluation of Testis in Patients With Ipsilateral Varicocele.

Objective: The current study aimed to investigate the effects of varicocele on testis parenchyma by using ZOOMit DWI and conventional DWI and to compare both diffusion methods.

Subjects And Methods: Forty-five patients with unilateral varicocele diagnosed by physical examination and color Doppler ultrasound between July 2015 and December 2015 and 32 healthy volunteers were included in the study. ZOOMit and conventional DWI were performed for all patients with a 3-T MRI scanner.

Extralevator abdominoperineal excision versus conventional surgery for low rectal cancer: a single surgeon experience.

Objective: Extralevator abdominoperineal excision (ELAPE) reduces the risk of positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) and of intraoperative perforation (IOP), both of which are associated with high local recurrence rates and poor survival outcomes for rectal cancer. The aim of this study was to compare the results of ELAPE with conventional abdominoperineal excision (APE) for low rectal cancer.

Material And Methods: A total of 25 consecutive patients underwent ELAPE for low rectal cancer between November 2008 and September 2011.

Isolated Tuberculosis of Capitate and Triquetrum.

Musculoskeletal system is involved in about 20% of the patients diagnosed with tuberculosis. Although musculoskeletal tuberculosis generally affects spine and large joints (hip and knee), hand involvement of the tuberculosis is seen in 10% of the patients with musculoskeletal involvement and also isolated tuberculosis of hand or wrist is much rarer. In the following report, we discuss the case of a 23-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with isolated tuberculosis of the capitate and triquetrum bone.

Preoperative evaluation of liver volume in living donor liver transplantation.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the difference between the preoperative estimated volume and the actual intraoperative graft volume determined in donor right hepatectomies and to evaluate the possible effect of age, gender, and body mass index on the difference.

Methods: A total of 225 donor hepatectomies performed at the center between 2016 and 2017 were evaluated for the study. Left hepatectomies and left lateral segmentectomies were excluded from the analysis.
