Ligamentous injuries of the hallux are rare, and when seen, they are most commonly treated conservatively. Surgical treatment of such injuries is also rare, making reports on the postoperative outcome and complications even less frequent. A case report of a hallux interphalangeal joint (IPJ) lateral collateral ligament tear in a 16-year-old gymnast is presented.

Purpose: The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) consists of two fascicles, with the intra-articular superior fascicle and extra-articular inferior fascicle connected to the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) via the arciform fibres, forming the lateral fibulotalocalcaneal ligament (LFTCL) complex. Accurate identification of which fascicles have been injured is useful for determining the optimal treatment of patients with lateral ligament injuries. There is a lack of imaging studies demonstrating the distinctive anatomy of these important structures on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Foot and ankle injuries in baseball provide unique challenges to the provider. Most foot and ankle injuries (ie, ankle sprains and contusions) can be managed non-operatively using a similar approach as in other athletic populations, but a few unique mechanisms of injury in baseball are important to be aware of. While upper extremity injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears and labral tears are extensively reported on in the literature, there is a need for further baseball-specific research on foot and ankle injuries, especially given the increasing prevalence of these injuries over the past few decades.

Background: Chronic wounds, such as diabetes-related foot ulcers, arise from delayed wound healing and create significant health and economic burdens. Macrophages regulate healing by shifting between pro- and anti-inflammatory phenotypes, known as macrophage polarization. Sex and diabetes can impair wound healing, but their influence on macrophage phenotype in skin tissue during wound healing remains unclear, which was investigated in this study using a novel two-sex diabetic mouse model.

Background: Foot strike patterns during running are classified into two types: rearfoot strike (RFS) and non-rearfoot strike (NRFS). These patterns are considered biomechanical risk factors for running-related injuries (RRIs). However, limited research exists on the prevalence or incidence of RRIs associated with different foot strike patterns, particularly within training or clinical practice contexts.

Patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) suffering from severe lower limb ischemia face the risk of amputation. Concomitant oxidative stress and hyperinflammation commonly manifest within the tissue affected by DFU, exacerbating the deterioration of DFU wounds. One-two punch strategy of anti-oxidative damage plus anti-inflammatory is anticipated to tackle the challenge of non-healing diabetic wounds.

Background: Ankle-foot sprains are the most common musculoskeletal injuries, which can impair balance and theoretically increase the risk of falls, but still, there is a lack of evidence supporting the direct association between ankle-foot sprains and the future risk of falls.
Methods: UK Biobank cohort was utilized to measure the association between ankle-foot sprains and fall risk with covariates adjusted. Then, the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was applied based on the genetically predicated ankle-foot sprains from FinnGen to validate causal relationship.

Background: Pilon fractures carry high rates of early wound healing, infectious complications, and late posttraumatic arthrosis. When reconstructive procedures are indicated, these patients are at further risk for early complications. Perhaps using the same direct anterior (DA) approach for initial repair and later reconstruction might mitigate these risks, but the DA approach has not been explored for initial repair.
