Our study aimed to assess the benefit of intrapleural fibrinolysis before resorting to surgery to treat complicated parapneumonic effusion and empyema. We conducted a retrospective and descriptive study, including all patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Abderhaman Mami hospital, Tunisia for empyema treated with instillation of intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy between the 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2016. In all patients, empyema was diagnosed on clinical features, imaging findings (chest X-ray, thoracic echography and/or computed tomography (CT), and microbiological data.

Camel-Derived Nanobodies as Potent Inhibitors of New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase-1 Enzyme.

Molecules

March 2024

Laboratoire des Biomolécules Venins et Applications Théranostiques, Institut Pasteur Tunis, 13 Place Pasteur, Tunisie Université Tunis El Manar, B.P N 93, Tunis 1068, Tunisia.

The injudicious usage of antibiotics during infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria leads to the emergence of β-lactamases. Among them, the NDM-1 enzyme poses a serious threat to human health. Developing new antibiotics or inhibiting β-lactamases might become essential to reduce and prevent bacterial infections.

Article Synopsis
  • Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a viral disease affecting ruminants, transmitted by midges, and recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health since 2008.
  • In 2021, a major outbreak of EHDV serotype 8 occurred in Tunisia, leading to reports of the virus spreading to Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France, marking its first presence outside Australia since 1982.
  • The study analyzed the outbreak's epidemiology in Tunisia, identifying eco-climatic factors that influenced infection patterns and suggesting that developed risk maps could aid in controlling and preventing future outbreaks in the region.

Impact of Body Reserves Dynamic on Productivity and Reproductive Performance in Fat-Tail and Thin-Tail Sheep Breeds over Contrasting Production Cycles.

Animals (Basel)

March 2024

Laboratoire des Production Animale et Fourragère, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique de Tunisie, University of Carthage, Rue Hedi Karray, Ariana 2049, Tunisia.

Under climate change, animal breeding faces severe nutritional challenges, exhibiting their resilience and efficiency to survive and produce. The animals' robustness can be evaluated through the use and reconstitution of body reserves (BR). This study investigated the dynamics of ewes' BR, measured through body weight (BW) and the body condition score (BCS), and their effect on production performances of 480 ewes belonging to fat-tailed Barbarine (BB) and thin-tailed Queue Fine de l'Ouest (QFO) ewes over two consecutive years.

  • Tacrolimus shows variability in how it works in different individuals and has a small window between effective and harmful doses, with ongoing debate about the effect of a specific genetic variant (CYP3A5 6986A>G) on this variability.
  • A study on Tunisian kidney transplant recipients examined the effects of this SNP on tacrolimus levels, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and kidney graft outcomes over five years.
  • Results indicated that patients with the CYP3A5*3 variant had higher tacrolimus concentrations and more ADRs, but this genetic variant did not affect the success of the kidney transplant.

The selectivity of a novel chemosensor, based on a modified nitrobenzofurazan referred to as NBD-Morph, has been investigated for the detection of heavy metal cations (Co, Pb, Mg, Ag, Cu, Hg, Ni2+, and Zn). The ligand, 4-morpholino-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-Morph), was characterized using spectroscopic techniques including FT-IR and H NMR. Vibrational frequencies obtained from FT-IR and proton NMR (H) chemical shifts were accurately predicted employing the density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP level of theory.

Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, is a zoonotic parasitic disease of economic and public health importance worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean area. Canids are the main definitive hosts of the adult cestode contaminating the environment with parasite eggs released with feces. In rural and peri-urban areas, the risk of transmission to livestock as well as humans is high because of the free-roaming behavior of owned/not owned dogs.

Celiac disease (CD) and rheumathoid arthritis (RA) are both multi-factorial chronic inflammatory auto-immune diseases. In this retrospective study, we determined the frequency of CD in patients with RA using IgA anti-endomysial antibodies (EmA) and tried to explain this association. Indirect immunofluorescence on human umbilical cord was used to detect EmA in 215 patients with seropositive RA collected over a 4-year-period.
