Department of Radiology, Faculté de Médecine de Sousse, Université de Sousse, Hôpital Farhat Hached, Sousse, Tunisie.

We report a case of a very rare association of adrenal adenoma, unilateral adrenal hyperplasia, and bilateral renal artery stenosis. A 61-year-old man with a remarkable history of two severe strokes was admitted to the Nephrology department with hypertension associated with severe hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis. Doppler of renal arteries was not conclusive, so contrast-enhanced scanning was done revealing a left adrenal adenoma, right adrenal hyperplasia, and bilateral moderate renal artery stenosis.

Influence of Gold Nanoparticles on eNOS Localization in Gill Tissues: Advancements in Immunofluorescence Techniques.

ACS Omega

December 2024

Laboratoire de Recherche: Caractérisations, Applications et Modélisation de Matériaux, Université de Tunis El Manar, Faculté des Sciences de Tunis, Tunis 2092, Tunisia.

This study optimizes immunofluorescence techniques using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to improve visualization of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in gill tissue. Two types of AuNP dispersions, stabilized in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and citrate buffer (CB), were evaluated for their imaging performance. AuNPs suspended in PBS provided significantly better optical contrast due to uniform distribution and effective tissue attachment, whereas citrate-suspended AuNPs exhibited aggregation, resulting in reduced contrast.

Maize is a worldwide crop yet can be associated with mycotoxigenic fungi, much investigated in humid tropical and cooler, wet temperate regions. However, in hot, arid/semi-arid regions data on their occurrence are poor. In this paper, we focused on interactions between maize and Fusarium fungal species in Tunisia, which has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and milder, damper winters.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined the lung damage in rats due to exposure to inhaled toluene and noise, focusing on the protective effects of L. leaf extract (OLE).
  • Rats were divided into groups based on different exposure combinations and received OLE treatment over six weeks.
  • Results showed that toluene and noise exposure caused significant lung tissue damage and inflammation, while OLE treatment reduced oxidative stress and inflammation, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent for lung health.

Article Synopsis
  • - North Africa has both fat-tailed and thin-tailed sheep breeds; the fat-tailed ones are better suited to dry environments.
  • - A study analyzed genetic data from 462 sheep across 22 breeds to identify genomic regions under different selective pressures related to these traits.
  • - Seven candidate regions on chromosomes, particularly around the BMP2 gene, were found to be under strong selection, linked to adaptations like fat storage and tolerance to harsh conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Military tuberculosis (MT) is a severe and potentially life-threatening form of tuberculosis characterized by widespread infection throughout the body caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis entering the bloodstream or lymphatics.
  • - Diagnosing MT is challenging because it often presents with vague symptoms and physical examination findings that can confuse even experienced doctors, while bacteriological evidence is frequently absent.
  • - The prognosis for MT depends heavily on how early the disease is diagnosed and treated, emphasizing the importance of prompt medical intervention, especially in vulnerable populations like children, young adults, and those with HIV.

Introduction: Therapeutic education of the patient (TPE) treated with AVK has improved the safety and efficiency of this treatment by establishing a new doctor-patient relationship. The objective of our study was to assess the impact of a TPE program on adherence in patients treated with AVK.

Methods: We conducted a prospective interventional study between January and September 2020, including two groups of patients hospitalized for a first thromboembolic: a G1 group with conventional service support and a G2 group with an ETP program created during this work.

Tropical regions are characterized by a hot and humid climate that promotes the emergence or resurgence of endemic or epidemic levels of microorganisms such as viruses. Emerging viral infections are mostly inapparent, mild, or non-specific (flu-like syndrome), but they may include serious, potentially disabling or life-threatening complications. A wide array of ocular manifestations has been recently described in association with specific emerging viral infections, including arboviruses, Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1), and Ebola.

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Faculty of Medicine, Hedi Chaker University Hospital, University of Sfax, Sfax, Tunisia.

Article Synopsis
  • - Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare and serious heart condition often occurring during or after pregnancy; this study assessed its outcomes in North Africa over a 12-year period from 2010 to 2022.
  • - Out of 27 PPCM patients studied, most presented symptoms like severe dyspnea and had a low average heart function measurement (LVEF of 30%); complications included pulmonary edema (85%) and the need for ECMO support in two patients.
  • - The follow-up revealed that 67% of patients showed recovery in heart function, but the overall mortality rate was 15%, with significant mortality associated with factors like past pregnancies and poor prenatal care.

Laboratory of Research and Development in Engineering Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology Al-Hoceima, Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Morocco.

This review seeks to establish a baseline on the current knowledge and gaps in the scientific literature on the invasive macroalgae Rugulopteryx okamurae. Through a systematic literature analysis we summarize the insights regarding distribution and potential impacts as non-indigenous species associated with its expansion from the Strait of Gibraltar since first detected by 2015. After 10 years, this invasive alien macroalgae has broadly expanded across the Mediterranean Sea (France, Spain, Morocco and Italy) and the Atlantic coasts (Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands).

Exercise mechanical efficiency typically falls within the range of approximately 20 to 25%. This means that a great part of the metabolic energy converted to generate movement is released as heat. Therefore, the rise in core temperature during endurance exercise in humans is proportional to generated work.
