Background: Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. The primary goals of this study are to (1) use Migraine-Specific Symptoms and Disability criteria and Migraine Headache Index to describe the symptomatic improvement following decompressive surgery for refractory migraines, and (2) use the average Migraine Headache Index preoperatively and postoperatively for health utility assessment from a healthy patient's perspective.

Methods: The Migraine-Specific Symptoms and Disability criteria and the Migraine Headache Index were used to characterize migraine symptoms in the authors' patient population before and after decompressive surgery.

Background: Hemophilia is characterized by a compromised hemostatic response with delayed development of a clot and the formation of clots that are vulnerable to fibrinolysis. We proposed to study, in vitro and in factor VIII knockout mice (FVIII-KO), whether hemostasis is improved with the addition of tranexamic acid (TXA) to low FVIII plasma concentrations.

The mitochondrial deacetylase sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) is thought to be one of the main contributors to metabolic flexibility-promoting mitochondrial energy production and maintaining homeostasis. In bone, metabolic profiles are tightly regulated and the loss of SIRT3 has deleterious effects on bone volume in vivo and on osteoblast differentiation in vitro. Despite the prominent role of this protein in bone stem cell proliferation, metabolic activity, and differentiation, the importance of SIRT3 for regeneration after bone injury has never been reported.

Background: Chronic pulmonary graft-versus-host disease (cpGVHD) after hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) manifests as progressive airway and parenchymal lung fibrosis. On the basis of our prior data, mice that undergo allogeneic HCT with Tbet-knockout donors (AlloTbet) have increased lung Th17 cells and IL-17A and develop fibrosis resembling human cpGVHD. The role of IL-17A in posttransplant pulmonary fibrosis remains incompletely understood.

In chemotherapy-treated breast cancer, wild-type p53 preferentially induces senescence over apoptosis, resulting in a persisting cell population constituting residual disease that drives relapse and poor patient survival via the senescence-associated secretory phenotype. Understanding the properties of tumor cells that allow survival after chemotherapy treatment is paramount. Using time-lapse and confocal microscopy to observe interactions of cells in treated tumors, we show here that chemotherapy-induced senescent cells frequently engulf both neighboring senescent or nonsenescent tumor cells at a remarkable frequency.

We examined the relationship between initial parenting stress and change in parental responsivity for 56 culturally and socioeconomically diverse families in a 12 week randomized control trial of Pathways Early ASD Intervention. Families were randomized into the Pathways (n = 32) or treatment-as-usual (TAU n = 24) group. Overall, Pathways parents experienced decreased stress, while TAU parents experienced an increase.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) poses a threat to the attainment of reproductive justice. Women who experience IPV are limited in their ability to parent their children in a secure and nurturing environment, which can have negative effects on the mother and child immediately and long-term, potentially distressing reproductive well-being across generations. Societal inequities faced by women, particularly women of color, within education, economic, and legal systems are associated with risk factors for IPV.

Purpose: Recent data and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines suggest that high-risk prostate cancer (cT3-4, Gleason score ≥8, or prostate-specific antigen [PSA] >20 ng/mL) is a heterogenous group in terms of long-term patient outcomes. We sought to determine whether subclassification of high-risk prostate cancer based on clinical factors correlates with genomic markers of risk.

Prompt diagnosis of invasive fungal infections is important because of the associated morbidity and mortality; however, diagnosis is challenging because of the nonspecific symptoms and radiographic findings. To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) galactomannan (GM) and serum or BAL polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in patients with suspected invasive aspergillosis (IA), β-d-glucan in critically ill patients at risk for candidiasis or candidemia, and serology testing and antigen detection in patients with endemic mycoses (histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, and coccidioidomycosis). By 1 January 1986 the rapid phase-down banned most lead additives. Whether adherence improved over time among adults <65 years of age is unknown. The relationship between malignancy and coagulopathy is one that is well documented yet incompletely understood. Clinicians have attempted to quantify the hypercoagulable state produced in various malignancies using common coagulation tests such as prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and platelet count; however, due to these tests' focus on individual aspects of coagulation during one specific time point, they have failed to provide clinicians the complete picture of malignancy-associated coagulopathy (MAC). Viscoelastic tests (VETs), such as thromboelastography (TEG) and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), are whole blood analyses that have the advantage of providing information related to the cumulative effects of plasma clotting factors, platelets, leukocytes, and red cells during all stages of the coagulation and fibrinolytic processes.

Thioredoxin reductase-1 (TrxR1)-, glutathione reductase (Gsr)-, and Nrf2 transcription factor-driven antioxidant systems form an integrated network that combats potentially carcinogenic oxidative damage yet also protects cancer cells from oxidative death. Here we show that although unchallenged wild-type (WT), TrxR1-null, or Gsr-null mouse livers exhibited similarly low DNA damage indices, these were 100-fold higher in unchallenged TrxR1/Gsr-double-null livers. Notwithstanding, spontaneous cancer rates remained surprisingly low in TrxR1/Gsr-null livers.
