A Collaborative Model for Pediatric Clinical Education: From Design to Implementation.

Background And Purpose: Collaborative clinical education models where 2 or more students are supervised by one clinical instructor in a clinical setting effectively support student learning and self-confidence. Use of collaborative models in specialized clinical education settings has not been widely adopted. This paper explores using Kern's 6-step approach to develop and implement a collaborative clinical education model.

Burdens of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease attributable to sugar-sweetened beverages in 184 countries.

The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, an updated and comprehensive assessment of the global burden attributable to SSBs remains scarce. Here we estimated SSB-attributable T2D and CVD burdens across 184 countries in 1990 and 2020 globally, regionally and nationally, incorporating data from the Global Dietary Database, jointly stratified by age, sex, educational attainment and urbanicity.

E-norms and AI in clinical neurophysiology.

Objective: To describe the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate the e-norms method, a technique used to derive normative data from patient studies, mixed datasets that contain both normal and abnormal data. Multiple studies have shown that normal values collected with the e-norms method compare favorably with those collected from healthy volunteers using traditional methods.

Methods: OpenAI's ChatGPT was used by the author to build a Python script to automate the e-norms method's plateau identification, the area of the e-norms curve where a variable's normal values lie.

Cost Effectiveness Analysis of Digital Therapeutics for Amblyopia.

Purpose: To evaluate the cost-utility of Luminopia and CureSight as therapy for amblyopia compared to current common amblyopic treatments such as glasses, atropine drops, and patching.

Design: Cost analysis based on data from published randomized control trials (RCTs).

Subjects: None; based on data from the Luminopia, CureSight and atropine RCTs.

How is Telehealth Used to Increase Access to Specialty Palliative Care? A Systematic Review.

Context: Specialty palliative care remains inaccessible for many with serious illness, especially in rural areas. Telehealth may be one solution.

Objectives: To describe how telehealth increases access to specialty palliative care, describe facilitators and barriers to its use, and summarize evidence of patient benefits.

Patient outcomes: One-stage vs. two-stage lumbar surgery for symptomatic low-grade spondylolisthesis: A quality outcomes database study.

Objective: Controversy exists regarding treatment of symptomatic low-grade spondylolisthesis (LGS). Both one- and two-stage fusions are commonly performed, but it is unclear if one approach is superior. We aim to compare the satisfaction rates and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with LGS undergoing one- versus two-stage lumbar spine surgery.

Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials Evaluating the Use of Platelet-Rich Plasma for Knee Osteoarthritis: Adherence to Minimum Information for Studies Evaluating Biologics in Orthopaedics.

Background: The Minimum Information for Studies Evaluating Biologics in Orthopedics (MIBO) guidelines were developed in May 2017 to encourage improved reporting standards, promote increased transparency and reproducibility, and enhance clinical evaluation capabilities. The MIBO guidelines consist of 23 checklist items considered necessary to critically appraise clinical studies evaluating platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Purpose: To assess randomized controlled trials that evaluated PRP for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in order to systematically review their adherence to the MIBO guidelines.

Quality of Life in Patients With Acquired Anophthalmia Using an Ocular Prosthesis.

Purpose: To employ a validated survey for evaluation of quality of life (QoL) outcomes and associated factors in a US cohort of adult patients with acquired anophthalmia wearing a prosthesis.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a single, US academic institution of patients cared for between 2012 and 2021. The electronic medical record database was queried for adult patients with a history of evisceration or enucleation surgery and placement of an orbital implant.

SNP rs6543176 is associated with extreme human longevity but increased risk for cancer.

Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) might offer insights into rare genetic variants associated with healthy aging and extreme longevity (EL), potentially pointing to useful therapeutic targets. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study using WGS data from the Long Life Family Study and identified a novel longevity-associated variant rs6543176 in the SLC9A2 gene. This SNP also showed a significant association with reduced hypertension risk and an increased, though not statistically significant, cancer risk.

Equestrian Sports Safety: An Update on Safety Equipment and Event Medical Coverage.

Equestrian sports are associated with high rates of major injury compared to collision and powered two-wheel sports. Advancements in rider and horse safety equipment and the implementation of comprehensive emergency action planning standards may help mitigate injuries, particularly in regard to the Olympic disciplines of dressage, show jumping, and three-day eventing covered in this review. Personal safety equipment to consider includes helmets, safety and air vests, and horse tack including safety stirrups, acoustic dampeners, and breakaway reins.

Cost and activity analysis for a citywide patient navigation intervention to engage underserved patients in breast cancer treatment: Findings from the Translating Research Into Practice study.

Background: Patient navigation is an evidence-based intervention for reducing delays in cancer care for underserved populations. There are limited economic evaluations of patient navigation in the US health care system and few have considered costs at various phases along the implementation spectrum. Having economic data, including costs and cost savings, can support sustainability of patient navigation programs.

Proportion of confirmed Lyme neuroborreliosis cases among adult patients with suspected early European Lyme neuroborreliosis.

Purpose: To determine the frequency of confirmed Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) cases in adult patients with three different clinical presentations consistent with early LNB.

Methods: Data were obtained through routine health care at the UMC Ljubljana, Slovenia from 2005 to 2022, using clinical pathways. The patients were classified into three groups: (i) radicular pain of new onset (N = 332); or (ii) involvement of cranial nerve(s) but without radicular pain (N = 997); or (iii) erythema migrans (EM) skin lesion(s) in conjunction with symptoms suggestive of nervous system involvement but without either cranial nerve palsy or radicular pain (N = 240).

Biofilms are ubiquitous surface-associated bacterial communities embedded in an extracellular matrix. It is commonly assumed that biofilm cells are glued together by the matrix; however, how the specific biochemistry of matrix components affects the cell-matrix interactions and how these interactions vary during biofilm growth remain unclear. Here, we investigate cell-matrix interactions in Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera.

There is considerable evidence implicating the basolateral amygdala (BLA) in the network communication of anxiety and fear, a process demonstrated to involve parvalbumin-positive (PV) interneurons.

Effect of postpartum clinical guideline on maternal outcomes in iranian women: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Background: The postpartum period is a vital time for women, infants, spouses, parents, caregivers and families. Considering the importance of postpartum care and the necessity of using comprehensive and up-to-date clinical guidelines in Iran, this study was designed to implement a indigenized clinical guideline in Iran on maternal outcomes, including maternal functioning, postpartum depression and postpartum specific anxiety (primary outcomes) as well as infant care, maternal health problems, experiencing violence, feeding method and contraception use (secondary outcomes).

Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 272 postpartum women in Taleghani and Alzahra hospitals in Tabriz in 2023.

Exploring a novel outcome measure of symptom progression in knee osteoarthritis utilizing a large randomized trial.

Objectives: Explore a newly defined composite measure of symptom progression for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in a large, randomized study of a potential disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD).

Design: Using longitudinal KOA studies, a potential composite endpoint of time to symptom progression was defined as the first occurrence of worsening of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) Pain of ≥10 points with no improvement (≤9 point decrease) in WOMAC Function (0-100 scale). A post hoc analysis explored discrimination and association with structural outcomes in the sprifermin FORWARD trial through Years 3 and 5.

Utility of preoperative ultrasound in assessing the adequacy of autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using tendon autograft requires imaging to evaluate graft adequacy. Ultrasound (US) offers an efficient adjunct to MRI; however, the utility of US is variable in prior literature and should be investigated. The primary aim of this study is to provide a statistical appraisal of literature assessing correlation of preoperative US measurements with intraoperative size of autografts during ACL reconstruction.

Lymphocytic Esophagitis: A Histologic Pattern of Various Underlying Disorders.

Background: Lymphocytic esophagitis (LyE) is a rare condition that has been reported in several case studies, but its diagnostic criteria and clinical significance are inconsistent. There are no established clinical associations, except for Crohn's disease in children. Our study aimed to determine if patients with LyE have distinct demographic or clinical characteristics when compared with patients with increased intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) in their esophageal biopsy.

Donor site morbidity of upper extremity flaps in head and neck reconstruction.

Objective: This retrospective cohort study aims to compare donor site morbidity of three commonly used upper extremity flaps used in head and neck reconstructive surgery: scapular tip free flap (STFF), radial forearm free flap (RFFF), and pectoralis major pedicled flap (PMPF).

Methods: The billing database of an urban, academic, tertiary otolaryngology practice was queried to identify patients who underwent STFF, RFFF, and PMPF from 2020 to 2023. The primary outcome was identification of donor site pain and need for physical therapy (PT) referral after undergoing reconstruction.

Efficacy of Extranasal Neurostimulation for Patients With Neuropathic Corneal Pain: A Pilot Study.

Purpose: Neuropathic corneal pain (NCP) has been recognized as a distinct disease, yet treatment options remain limited. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the effectiveness of extranasal neurostimulation (EXNS) as a potential pain relief strategy for individuals with the peripheral component of NCP.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed to identify patients who were diagnosed with refractory peripheral or mixed NCP and subsequently underwent a single session of EXNS.

Net Promoter Score as a Reflection of Patients' Opinions About Telemedical Visits: A Mixed Methods Analysis.

In order to assess patient experiences of telemedicine, researchers and administrators use the net promoter score (NPS), based on a likelihood to recommend (LTR) question. However, there is reason to doubt validity of this metric for this purpose. We assessed the degree to which the LTR question reflects actual patient preferences about telemedicine.
