J Dent Educ

September 2019

Chelsea Johnston was a DMD student, Class of 2018, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine at the time of this study; Joyce Ganas is a DMD student, Class of 2020, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Y. Natalie Jeong is Associate Professor of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Amanda Nevius is Research and Instruction Librarian, Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library; Seyed Hossein Bassir is Assistant Professor of Periodontology and Director of Advanced Specialty Education Program in Periodontics, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine; and Irina F. Dragan is Assistant Professor of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

The aims of this systematic review were to collect a list of published articles on dental faculty development and to determine the types and location of programs evaluated and years of publication. A subset of selected articles were then assessed using Kirkpatrick assessment model four levels: learner reaction, participant learning, participant behavioral change, and changes in organizational practice. The search, conducted in 2016, comprised all potentially relevant articles in the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE via Ovid, and ERIC.

Gayathri M. Shenoy is a first-year postdoctoral resident, Department of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Irina Florentina Dragan is Assistant Professor and Program Director, Dental Education Learning and Teaching Academy Fellowship, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Sarah Pagni is Assistant Professor, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Jennipher Murphy is Director, Education and Faculty Support, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; and Nadeem Karimbux is Academic Dean and Professor, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

The Basic Science/Clinical Science Spiral Seminar Series (BaSiCSsss) was implemented at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2013. In the series, teams of dental students from all four years presented components of a clinical case, supported by evidence-based dentistry concepts. The role of the third-year student on each team was to present questions based on the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) method to support the treatment plan for the selected case.

Using a Simulated Infobutton Linked to an Evidence-Based Resource to Research Drug-Drug Interactions: A Pilot Study with Third-Year Dental Students.

November 2015

Dr. Dragan is Assistant Professor, Department of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Dr. Newman is Professor Emeritus, University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry; Dr. Stark is Adjunct Professor, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; Dr. Steffensen is Professor and Chair, Department of Periodontology, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine; and Dr. Karimbux is Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

Many health professions students and clinicians are using evidence-based databases that allow for quicker and more accurate clinical decisions. The aims of this pilot study were to compare third-year dental students' speed and accuracy in researching questions about drug-drug interactions (DDI) when using two different methods: a simulated infobutton linked to the evidence-based clinical decision support resource UpToDate versus traditional Internet resources accessed through a computer or smart device. Students researched two simulated cases during two sessions.
