Prevent and Reverse Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis and Hepatic Fibrosis via mRNA-Mediated Liver-Specific Antibody Therapy.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Drug Target Identification and Delivery, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, National Key Laboratory of Innovative Immunotherapy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, P. R. China.

Chronic exposure of the liver to multiple insults culminates in the development of metabolic dysfunctionassociated steatohepatitis (MASH), a complicated metabolic syndrome characterized by hepatic steatosis and inflammation, typically accompanied by progressive fibrosis. Despite extensive clinical evaluation, there remain challenges in MASH drug development, which are primarily due to unsatisfactory efficacy and limited specificity. Strategies to address the unmet medical need for MASH with fibrosis before it reaches the irreversible stage of decompensated cirrhosis are critically needed.

Oral Health, Inflammation, and Cardiometabolic Factors in the VA Million Veteran Program.

JDR Clin Trans Res

December 2024

VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure, VA Salt Lake City Health Care System, Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

Introduction: Associations between cardiometabolic comorbidities and self-reported oral health (OH) are often underexplored in large biobank datasets. While these associations are unaffected by dental care access, they could be mediated by immune responses and inflammation.

Objectives: This study assessed the associations between cardiometabolic comorbidities and self-reported OH, periodontitis, and tooth loss using the (ICD) codes in participants from the U.

Background: Prescriber-patient communication plays a crucial role in understanding patients' needs, while reducing risks for developing an opioid use disorder (OUD), yet research on this is sparse. As such, the need to understand healthcare providers' skills, comfort, and confidence when discussing opioids with patients and other providers is an important step in balancing patients' needs from a pain perspective and risks from an OUD perspective.

Method: We interviewed 32 Massachusetts providers (physicians, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and dental practitioners) to assess their communication strategies with patients and other providers.

Accuracy of a facebow record: A comparison between a conventional facebow and a smartphone 3D scanner.

J Prosthet Dent

November 2024

Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences & Prosthodontics, University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Ann Arbor, Mich. Electronic address:

Statement Of Problem: Accurately transferring the maxillary cast to the articulator is an essential step in most prosthodontics procedures in both digital and conventional workflows. Recently, the use of a smartphone 3-dimensional (3D) scanner-based virtual facebow record has been reported, but its accuracy is unclear.

Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to compare the trueness and precision of a virtual facebow record made with a smartphone 3D scanner with that of a conventional facebow technique.

Background: Disturbances in the intricate processes that control craniofacial morphogenesis can result in birth defects, most common of which are orofacial clefts (OFCs). Nonsyndromic cleft lip (nsCL), one of the phenotypic forms amongst OFCs, has a non-random laterality presentation with the left side being affected twice as often compared to the right side. This study investigates the etiology of nsCL and the factors contributing to its laterality using a pair of monozygotic twins with mirror-image cleft lip.

: The loss of teeth in the posterior maxillary region often leads to significant alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, complicating dental implant placement. Maxillary sinus grafting, typically using autogenous bone, is a common solution. However, autogenous bone grafts require additional surgical procedures, leading to increased morbidity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the time efficiency and reliability of manual vs. AI-assisted segmentation of the mandibular canal and registration of scans by 20 clinicians with varying experience levels in implant planning.
  • Results showed that AI-assisted methods significantly reduced the time taken for these tasks (4.75 min manual vs. 2.03 min AI), while the accuracy was similar for both methods in terms of discrepancy measurements.
  • The findings suggest that AI tools can enhance implant planning efficiency without compromising accuracy, though further research is needed to confirm these results across different software and datasets.

Oral health in systemic sclerosis: A scoping review.

J Scleroderma Relat Disord

May 2024

Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited research on oral health in systemic sclerosis prompts a scoping review to identify studies related to quality of life across five key domains: symptoms, functional impacts, psychosocial factors, patient-related variables, and self-care practices.
  • From 1460 studies reviewed, only 91 were included, with most being conducted in Europe or North America and featuring small participant numbers, indicating a significant gap in comprehensive research.
  • The majority of studies focus on oral manifestations and symptoms, with fewer addressing other crucial areas; further systematic reviews and larger studies are essential to improve understanding and care for systemic sclerosis patients.

Background: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of psychological and physiological factors. While salivary biomarkers, particularly cortisol, play an important role in TMD pathophysiology, evidence in the literature is still scarce and inconsistent. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the applicability of salivary cortisol as a potential biomarker for TMD in adults.

The development of effective biomaterials for tissue regeneration has led to the exploration of blood derivatives such as leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF). A novel variant, Albumin-Enriched Platelet-Rich Fibrin (Alb-PRF), has been introduced to improve structural stability and bioactivity, making it a promising candidate for bone regeneration. This study aimed to evaluate Alb-PRF's capacity for cytokine and growth factor release, along with its effects on the proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization of human osteoblasts in vitro.

Magnets have been used to help position dental components, including magnetic mounting plates for articulators and magnetic attachments for implant surgical guides. A magnetically coupled tooth arrangement technique used the fixed reference point of integrated implants to determine maxillomandibular relations and the tooth arrangement, thus improving the efficiency of the clinical appointment. The magnetic framework was screwed into the implants only once for the duration of a clinical appointment.
