Growing debates about algorithmic bias in public health surveillance lack specific examples. We tested a common assumption that exposure and illness periods coincide and demonstrated how algorithmic bias can arise due to missingness of critical information related to illness and exposure durations. We examined 9407 outbreaks recorded by the United States National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2019 and detected algorithmic bias, a systematic over- or under-estimation of foodborne disease outbreak (FBDO) durations due to missing start and end dates.

Increased de novo lipogenesis (DNL) in white adipose tissue is associated with insulin sensitivity. Under both Normal-Chow-Diet and High-Fat-Diet, mice expressing a kinase inactive Cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (Cdk6) allele (K43M) display an increase in DNL in visceral white adipose tissues (VAT) as compared to wild type mice (WT), accompanied by markedly increased lipogenic transcriptional factor Carbohydrate-responsive element-binding proteins (CHREBP) and lipogenic enzymes in VAT but not in the liver. Treatment of WT mice under HFD with a CDK6 inhibitor recapitulates the phenotypes observed in K43M mice.

Reduction of wasting, or low weight-for-height, is a critical target for the Zero Hunger Sustainable Development Goal, yet robust evidence establishing continuous seasonal patterns of wasting is presently lacking. The current consensus of greatest hunger during the preharvest period is based on survey designs and analytical methods, which discretize time frame into preharvest/postharvest, dry/wet, or lean/plenty seasons. We present a spatiotemporally nuanced study of acute malnutrition seasonality in African drylands using a 15-year data set of Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition surveys (n = 412,370).

The confluence of growing analytic capacities and global surveillance systems for seasonal infections has created new opportunities to further develop statistical methodology and advance the understanding of the global disease dynamics. We developed a framework to characterise the seasonality of infectious diseases for publicly available global health surveillance data. This cross-sectional study examined whether the probation office setting was feasible to screen adults on probation for cardiometabolic risk factors, measure risk profiles, and estimate the prevalence of obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and diabetes. Background: Cardiovascular health (CVH) from young adulthood is strongly associated with an individual's future risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and total mortality. Defining epigenomic biomarkers of lifelong CVH exposure and understanding their roles in CVD development may help develop preventive and therapeutic strategies for CVD.

Widespread destruction from the Yemeni Civil War (2014-present) triggered the world's largest cholera outbreak. We compiled a comprehensive health dataset and created dynamic maps to demonstrate spatiotemporal changes in cholera infections and war conflicts. We aligned and merged daily, weekly, and monthly epidemiological bulletins of confirmed cholera infections and daily conflict events and fatality records to create a dataset of weekly time series for Yemen at the governorate level (subnational regions administered by governors) from 4 January 2016 through 29 December 2019.

For several decades, the World Health Organization has collected, maintained, and distributed invaluable country-specific disease surveillance data that allow experts to develop new analytical tools for disease tracking and forecasting. To capture the extent of available data within these sources, we proposed a completeness metric based on the effective time series length.
