Calibration of Chronic Lung Disease Severity as a Risk Factor for Respiratory Syncytial Virus Hospitalization.

J Pediatric Infect Dis Soc

April 2021

Department of Pharmaceutical Outcomes & Policy, College of Pharmacy, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA.

Background: Guidelines assume children with chronic lung disease (CLD) who require medical support within 6 months before the second respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season remains at high risk of severe RSV disease. We determined the number of days since the last treatment (DSL) when the risk of RSV hospitalization among children with CLD becomes equivalent to the risk for those not qualified for immunoprophylaxis.

Methods: The study cohort was assembled using Medicaid billing records from 1999 to 2010 linked to Florida and Texas birth certificate records.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade adnexal neoplasm with predilection for the periorbital skin of older women. Histologically and immunophenotypically, EMPSGC is analogous to another neoplasm with neuroendocrine differentiation, solid papillary carcinoma of the breast. Both lesions are spatially associated with neuroendocrine mucinous adenocarcinomas of the skin and breast, respectively.

Receptor signaling, transcriptional, and metabolic regulation of T cell exhaustion.

Oncoimmunology

July 2021

Department of Molecular & Biomedical Sciences, University of Maine, Orono, ME, USA.

Exhaustion cripples T cell effector responses against metastatic cancers and chronic infections alike. There has been considerable interest in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving T cell exhaustion in human cancers fueled by the success of immunotherapy drugs especially the checkpoint receptor blockade (CRB) inhibitory antibodies that reverses T cell functional exhaustion. The current understanding of molecular mechanism of T cell exhaustion has been elucidated from the studies utilizing murine models of chronic viral infections.

Despite advances in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) technology, right ventricular failure (RVF) continues to be a complication after implantation. Most patients undergoing LVAD implantation have underlying right ventricular (RV) dysfunction (either as a result of prolonged LV failure or systemic disorders) that becomes decompensated post-implantation. Additional insults include intra-operative factors or a sudden increase in preload in the setting of increased cardiac output.

Blood activation and stasis removal from circulation is a central principle for treatment of syndromes related to cerebral and cardiovascular diseases in Chinese herbal medicine. However, blood-activating and stasis-removing patent Chinese herbal medicine (BASR-pCHM) widely used with or without prescription in China and elsewhere are highly variable in composition and manufacture standard, making their safety assessment a challenging task. We proposed that an integrated evaluation of multiple toxicity parameters of BASR-pCHM would provide critical reference and guidelines for their safe clinical application.

We analyzed maternal plasma cell-free DNA samples from twin pregnancies in a prospective blinded study to validate a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) for zygosity, fetal sex, and aneuploidy. Zygosity was evaluated by looking for either one or two fetal genome complements, fetal sex was evaluated by evaluating Y-chromosome loci, and aneuploidy was assessed through SNP ratios. Zygosity was correctly predicted in 100% of cases (93/93; 95% confidence interval (CI) 96.
